2 TO OUR COLLEAGUES IN THE WATER INDUSTRY: We cordially invite you to the 38 th National Convention of the Philippine Association of Water Districts (PAWD) on February 1-3, 2017 at the SMX Convention Center, Lanang, Davao City. Water, our most vital resource and a basic human right, is under threat. Population growth, increased economic activity and improved standards of living are placing tremendous pressures both on the resource supply and service delivery systems. Due to more frequent occurrences of climate-related events, super typhoons such as Ondoy in 2009, Sendong in 2011, and Yolanda in 2013 devastated our country resulting to death of thousands of people and billions-worth of economic losses. During droughts several areas in the country suffered from water shortage resulting to insufficient water for irrigation, reduced stream flow and water rationing among affected Filipinos. Furthermore, our country s poor sanitation causes 20,000 premature deaths, 38 million cases of diarrhea, and $1.4 billion in health, water, and economic losses each year. The fragmented and overlapping regulatory mandates in the sector s operating environment is also another obstacle that hampers our growth in water and sanitation. With the theme Water Districts: Adapting to Change, the convention shall be a platform for key stakeholders in the water industry to provide answers, actions and results in resolving the above-mentioned challenges through collective effort. Moreover, the convention will underscore the critical and urgent need for water districts to address, reduce, and prepare for various vulnerabilities in order to ensure that Filipinos will be provided with safe, adequate and affordable water.
