1 17 July 2015 Dear Friends: On behalf of the Bard College Debate Union and the entire Bard College community, we are pleased to invite you to the Bard College Invitational. The tournament will be held on September 19 and 20, 2015 on the beautiful Bard College campus in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York. Bard College is approximately 100 miles North of New York City and 50 miles South of Albany, nestled on the East bank of the Hudson River directly across from the peaks of the Catskill Mountains. Last year s tournament was a great success. We hosted nearly 70 teams, ran ahead of schedule, had top-notch judging, good food, low entry fees, and a centrally-located GA with no long walks to other buildings! Needless to say, we hope to put on another great tournament this year. The tournament will offer 5 rounds of British Parliamentary Debate (4 rounds Saturday, 1 round Sunday), followed by an appropriate number of elimination rounds. There will also be a novice break-out final. This is an intervarsity tournament and thus open to all college and university students. With the exception of swing teams, Bard students will not be competing in the tournament. The team cap for the tournament is 100 teams. Entry fees will be $40/person. We are pleased to announce that Neshay Aqueel, Camara Stokes Hudson, and Steven Penner will lead our adjudication team. Neshay Aqueel is a debate coach at Cornell University; before working at Cornell, Neshay was a nationally ranked speaker in Pakistan, was named Best Speaker by the Kent Debating Society, represented the University of Kent at the Oxford Women s Open and Imperial College IV, and represented the United Kingdom as part of the touring British Debate Team. Camara Stokes Hudson is currently a Junior at the University of Vermont where she is an active member of the Lawrence Debate Union. She is a Finalist of the Pan American Championship, the Champion and 1 st Speaker of the Ithaca IV, 2 nd Speaker at the Kings College Empire Debates, and broke at USU Steven Penner is an Assistant Debate Coach at Hobart and William Smith; Steve is a Canadian BP Champion, HWS Round Robin Finalist, and twice Top Canadian Speaker at WUDC. He has CA d over a dozen tournaments, judged semis in both WUDC Chennai and Malaysia, and will be a CA at NAUDC In his free time in enjoys starting pointless arguments on Facebook. Steve Llano, Director of Debate at St. John s University, will serve as our tab director. And we, Ruth Zisman and David Register, will be your conveners. We expect all tournament participants to treat one another and Bard College community members with respect. 2 ENTRIES/REGISTRATION: Entry fees will be $40 per person. These fees will cover breakfast and lunch on Saturday and Sunday as well as awards. We will happily consider reducing or waiving the entry fees for new programs or programs facing financial obstacles; just get in touch with us. All checks should be made payable to Bard College. Please send entries to Ruth Zisman by September 15, It would also be immensely helpful if you could let us know as early as possible if you plan to attend, so we could get a sense of total numbers. Please Note payment is expected at the tournament. If you need an invoice ahead of time, please just let us know. But again - we need to collect ALL PAYMENTS at the TOURNAMENT. JUDGING: Requirement The judging requirement is N-1. There will be a $100 fee for each uncovered team/missing judge. Independent adjudicators We are lucky to have so many recent debaters living in the nearby NYC metro area (and all over the Northeast)! We strongly encourage independent judges to get in touch with us if they are interested in coming to judge. It is possible that we can help fund travel for some folks! HOTELS: Bard is somewhat geographically challenged in terms of hotels. The closest hotels are all very small motels or boutique hotels in the nearby villages of Red Hook and Rhinebeck, NY. The closest bigger and cheaper hotels are near the Interstate (87/NY Thruway) in Kingston, NY (about a 15 min drive from Bard). WE RECOMMEND STAYING IN KINGSTON. There are also a number of hotels about miles south of Bard in Hyde Park, NY and Poughkeepsie, NY. As September is a very popular time to visit the Hudson Valley, hotels will fill up early. PLEASE MAKE YOUR RESERVATIONS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. There is no designated tournament hotel but we have listed several hotel options below. At dead end/stop Sign, turn LEFT immediately into large parking area and PARK ANYWHERE IN THIS LOT Olin Hall is at the North End (opposite end of where you entered) of this parking lot! There will be Bard Debaters around to direct/greet you! From NYS Thruway/87 Take exit 19 for Kingston/NY 28/Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge Follow signs to Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge This will put you on 209 East which will then turn into 199 East Follow Route 199 across the Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge ($1.50 toll) At second light, turn LEFT onto 9G North At second light, turn LEFT on River Road Immediately at triangle, bear RIGHT toward Annandale Road Immediately at Stop Sign, turn RIGHT onto Annandale Road Now you are on Campus
