5 BC HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIP INFORMATION The 217 Peewee Rep Tier 2 BC Hockey Championships will commence on Sunday, March 19, 217 at the Trail Memorial Centre. The Cominco Arena (Trail Memorial Centre) is located at 151 Victoria Avenue, Trail, BC. The banquet for players/coaches/managers/officials will take place on Saturday, March 18 at 6: pm in the Cominco Gymnasium located in the Trail Memorial Centre. Pre-order your dinner (order forms will be forwarded to qualifying teams). For banquet pre-order confirmation, please contact Lisa Maximick at gtmha.vp2@gmail.com There will be a Coaches meeting on Saturday, March 18, 217 immediately following the Banquet in the McIntyre Meeting Room at the Trail Memorial Centre. The on-ice opening ceremonies are scheduled for Sunday, March 19 time TBD. Participation in the opening ceremonies is mandatory for all teams. Players are asked to arrive at the Cominco Arena (Trail Memorial Centre), 15 minutes prior to scheduled opening ceremonies in team jerseys. Teams scheduled for play immediately following the opening ceremonies will be fully dressed. The on-ice closing ceremonies will be held immediately following the final scheduled game. 7 INTRODUCTION The City of Trail is located in the Columbia River Valley of southeastern British Columbia, 19 km north of the US border and is home to the Greater Trail Minor Hockey Association. The Greater Trail area has a population of just over 18, people. We are sure you will find our city to be very friendly and outgoing. The City of Trail is well known for its hockey tradition, which includes: the founding of Minor Hockey Week, two World Hockey Championship teams (1939 and 1961), as well as home to many hockey players who have moved on to have very successful professional hockey careers. The City boasts one of the finest hockey facilities in the province, which has been very recently upgraded with all new theatre style seating, 2,1 seats, and a state of the art four-sided video scoreboard with full broadcast facilities, and 8-foot high glass all the way around the boards. The facility has a total of eight dressing rooms for hockey with the largest being over 95 square feet in size. The 176, sq. ft. facility also includes a full sized 1 seat gymnasium with full banquet catering facilities for 55 people, various meeting rooms, an eight-sheet curling rink facility, a smaller Kid s ice rink (15ft x 75ft), and squash and racquetball courts. Other City owned recreational facilities within close proximity to the Trail Memorial Arena include the Trail Aquatic and Leisure Centre, which is the largest indoor aquatic centre facility in the southern interior of the province, and the Willi Krause Fieldhouse with its rubberized floor and indoor track. The Greater Trail Area also known as the Home of Champions, has successfully hosted a multitude of provincial, national and international sporting events over the years. Some of these include: the 27 World Junior A Hockey Challenge, the BC Summer Games (1996), the BC Winter Games (1982 and 26), and the 1995 Senior Babe Ruth Baseball World Series, which was the first time this international event was hosted outside of the USA. The City of Trail was recently awarded the title BC s #1 Sports Town. This title was earned for not only producing a large number of athletes, coaches and teams in a variety of sports who gained success in National and International competitions, or from the first rate sports facilities that the City has built, but also from successfully hosting large-scale sporting events. The organizing committee of this tournament is excited to host the 217 Peewee Rep Tier 2 BC Hockey Championships and enthusiastically welcomes all players, parents and coaches to our community. The main ice rink facility is of an NHL standard 85 x 2. The facility has seen upgrades to all of its major systems in the past five years including the arena glass, video score clock, heaters and seating to name just a few. The facility is truly first class in terms of its operations, size, history and layout. The quality of the ice surface is recognized as one the very best in the province and the maintenance staff is very experienced and professional, having worked and prepared ice for many international hockey events. 9 RESTAURANTS No visit to Trail is complete without a trip to the Colander Restaurant. This Italian themed spaghetti house is famous for its all you can eat banquet style dining. This restaurant has the perfect atmosphere for any hockey team. Reservations are recommended (25) Trail Coffee & Tea Co. located in down town Trail serves sandwiches/subs and coffee (25) Ace of Taste Chinese Restaurant is the best Chinese Food in Trail. Serves lunch and dinner (25) The Best Western Plus Columbia River Hotel has a hot/cold buffet breakfast daily/restaurant/and Foxy s bar/lounge. For reservations, call Finer dining is available at Benedict s Steak House between Trail and Warfield (25) , Café Michael just passed the Waneta Mall on Highway 3 (25) , and the Best Western Plus Columbia River Hotel Local area coffee bars serving specialty coffees, light breakfast and lunch include Morning Perk in the TD Plaza across from the arena, and the Trail Coffee & Tea Co. downtown at 1369 Cedar Avenue. Specialty coffees at The Doorway are also a great start to your morning at 1386 Cedar Avenue. Takeout pizza in the Trail area can be ordered from Panago (25) 31-1, or Canadian 2 for 1 Pizza, (two locations): (25) Trail, or (25) Castlegar. In Rossland, there is Misty Mountain Pizza (25) Area fast food includes McDonalds (one block from the rink), A & W (across from the rink), Tim Horton s (at the Waneta Mall) and two locations of Subway (across from the rink and at Waneta Mall). The Rock Cut Neighborhood Pub & Restaurant in nearby Rossland provides a mountain pub like setting at the base of Red Resort Ski Hill and serves pub style food to adults and children in its family restaurant section. 10 MEDICAL FACILITIES Trail is home to the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital, which is one of the largest in the interior of the province. Over 8 doctors and specialists have privileges to practice there. The hospital is located one kilometer from the ice rink facility. In case of an emergency contact (25) Local ambulance services are provided by the BC Provincial Ambulance Service, which includes highly trained paramedics and very fast response time. First responders from the Regional Fire Services located a few blocks from ice rink facility, also service the City of Trail and Area. Built in 1996, this multi-million dollar facility has won awards for its design and structure. 12 Visit the Teck Cominco Interpretive Centre, a mini science centre located in the TD Bank complex across from the Trail Memorial Centre. Free-guided tours through the world s largest lead/zinc smelter are also available although children must be 12 years of age to participate in the on-site tour of the plant operations. For reservations, contact (25) TRANSPORTATION ROUTES The City of Trail is situated 1 km from the US border in the West Kootenay region of British Columbia. Major transportation routes from the west include: 37 km from Kelowna BC, via Highway 33 to Rock Creek, continuing on Highway 3 through Midway, Greenwood and Grand Forks. Continue east taking the Highway 3B turn off of Highway 3 to Rossland/Trail. 628 km from Vancouver BC via the Hope Princeton Highway and continuing on Highway 3 through Princeton, Keremeous, Osoyoos, Rock Creek, Midway, Greenwood and Grand Forks. Continue east taking the Highway 3B turn off of Highway 3 to Rossland/Trail. The transportation route from the east is via Highway 3. Trail is located 214 km west of Cranbrook.
