3 Welcome On behalf of the Kitimat Minor Hockey Association, I would like to welcome all players, team officials, and families that have travelled to participate in the 2018 Bantam Tier 4 Championship. It is always exciting to welcome old and new friends to our community, especially for such an exciting event. It is our intention that all participants have an enjoyable and everlasting memory. Without the many hours of hard work from our Championship Committee, an event of this magnitude would not be possible. The effort and countless hours of personal time from all our volunteers cannot be appreciated enough. Thank you. I would also like to extend my sincere appreciation to the District of Kitimat, the many businesses and organizations, and the community at large that have contributed to this event. This is a great example of how partnerships that have been created ensure the success of this great event. The BC Hockey Mission Statement is Lead, develop and promote positive lifelong hockey experiences. To further support that mission statement, I would suggest that good sportsmanship and fair play is vital from all players, coaches, and fans. We are all fans of a truly exciting game. In saying that, respect your fellow athletes and officials, participate with your best effort, and represent your community with pride. Most importantly, have fun and foster new and lasting friendships. To that end, good luck to all athletes. I hope you have an exciting and challenging BC Championship. 4 History of Kitimat "Kitimat in the Tsimshian language refers to the Haisla First Nation as the "People of the Snow". Before 1950 the Kitimat Township was a small fishing village at the head of the Kitimat Arm of the Douglas Channel, a deep-water fjord. The municipal town of Kitimat came into existence in the 1950s after the Provincial Government of British Columbia invited Alcan to develop hydroelectric facilities to support one of the most power-intensive of all industries - the aluminum smelting industry. The company built a dam, 16 km (10 mi) tunnel, and powerhouse, 82 km (51 mi) transmission line, a deep sea terminal and smelter. The company also designed, lay out and assisted with the initial construction of the city. At the time, the combined development was considered "the most expensive project ever attempted by private industry." Alcan employed the services of city planner Clarence Stein in order to ensure the community design facilitated an environment that would attract and retain workers, although Alcan intended it to not be a company town. Today, Kitimat benefits from the quality of planning resulting from the Garden City design concept. Stein s design kept industry well separated from the community with large areas for expansion. He also created looped street surrounding an urban City Centre Mall and linked by over 45 km (28 mi) of walkways connecting to all areas of the community. The substantial greenspace areas and future expansion concepts designed by Stein have been upheld to this day by the city planners. (Wikipedia) The Kitimat River and nearby ocean channels are ideal for a variety of water sports including freshwater and saltwater fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and boating. Similarly, the area s untouched lands, forests and peaks entice and fully accommodate people hiking, rock climbing, ATVing, snowmobiling, guide outfitting, cross-country skiing, and many more. 6 Tournament Information All teams are expected to attend the Banquet and Opening Ceremonies. All teams are urged to attend the Closing Ceremonies but it is understood that some teams may already be travelling home by that time. The coaches meeting on the evening of March 17 th must be in attendance by at least one coach and one manager from each team. 8 Venue Tamatik Arena 400 City Centre Kitimat BC Phone: Emergency 911 Tamatik Arena offers a 27M X 61M ice surface, five dressing rooms, seating for 1977 persons and standing room for 400, concession, two meeting rooms, and a large multi-function lobby. In the off-ice season, the cement floor of the arena hosts indoor soccer, roller hockey, concerts and special events. Players can enter from the lower level parking of the arena, while spectators can gain access from the lower level as well, or the multiple doors on the top level just beyond the Kitimat Ice Rink.

10 Miscellaneous Tournament Information Concession The concession is located on the upper level of the Tamatik Arena and will be open during games throughout the tournament. Cash only please. Raffles Raffle basket tables will be set up on the mezzanine at the Tamatik arena and 50/50 draws will take place throughout the tournament. All winning tickets will be posted at the raffle table in the arena.

13 Things to do continued First Nations Culture Please visit the official Haisla community website for information on local First Nations art & culture. This site contains an online gallery, artist biographies, an overview of the Haisla language, multimedia downloads and more. Fishing/Fresh & Saltwater Kitimat is located along the banks of the Kitimat River. The river is filled with an abundance of salmon during each of the major runs in late spring, summer and early fall. Trout may be fished year-round. Steelhead is also found in the Kitimat River. Access points are available along the river as well as at Radley Park. Kitimat is located at the head of the Kitimat Arm; a fjord-like water body that extends northeast from the Douglas Channel and the Pacific Ocean. Three local marinas and various boat launches provide ocean access to the Channel and beyond. Channel fishing includes: salmon, halibut, cod, snapper, rockfish, crab and prawn.
