The Lake The 32 mie ong Lake George is nested in the Adirondack Mountains which rise 2,500 feet above the ake. The ake has a maximum depth of about 200 ft. and some 172 isands. Most of the ake is spring fed. Lake George was an integra part of the natura navigation system running south-north from the mouth of the Hudson River to the Lake George region, to Lake Champain, to the Richeieu River, and on to the St. Lawrence River. Contro of this corridor during coonia times meant domination of the region. Coonia Wars This region was bittery contested between the Iroquois and the Agonquin Native Americans. In 1609, the French exporer, Samue de Champain, with his Agonquin, Huron, and Montagnais aies, defeated a superior force of Iroquois in the Champain Vaey. That batte cemented an aiance in which the Agonquins supported the French and the Iroquois backed the Engish in future conficts. In 1689, the first of severa coonia wars between the French and Engish began. This was known as King Wiiam s War ( ). It was foowed by Queen Anne s War ( ) and King George s War ( ). There was itte miitary action from these wars in the Lake George area. A three wars ended without either side gaining a concusive victory. By 1754, British and coonia authorities became concerned over the French forts being constructed aong the Ohio River Vaey frontier. Foowing two miitary encounters in southwest Pennsyvania invoving Virginia miitia under Lieutenant Coonia George Washington and French troops, a fina confrontation between the French and Engish in North America became inevitabe. The British strategy in 1755, under the eadership of Genera Braddock, was for the British and their coonia aies, caed provincias, to take Forts Duquesne, Niagara, St. Frederic, and Beausejour (Nova Scotia). This war began in North America as the French & Indian War ( ) and in Europe as the Seven Years War ( ). Seventeen fifty-five was a terribe year for the British as Genera Braddock was defeated and kied near Fort Duquesne and the provincias never got to Niagara, becoming bogged down at Oswego. However, Lieutenant Coone Robert Monckton was successfu as thousands of Acadians in present-day Nova Scotia were forced from their homes. Finay, Genera Wiiam Johnson with provinicia troops defeated the French in the Batte of Lake George. With this beginning, Lake George was the scene of momentous warfare during both the French and Indian War and the American Revoution ( ). 3.3 Mies Round Trip 2 Hours Approximate Waking Time The Coonia Wars In Lake George Sef-Guided Tour LAKE GEORGE n September 8, 1755 The Batte of Lake George was fought at the south end of the ake. This was a great British victory over the French and their Native American aies. n March 1757 The French crossed ice-covered Lake George and attacked Fort Wiiam Henry. However, the French retreated after they were unabe to seize the fort. n August 1757 The French again attacked Fort Wiiam Henry and the entrenched camp in what is now Lake George Battefied Park. This time the British surrendered and the French burned the fort before departing. n Juy ,000 British and provincias eft the south end of Lake George and attacked French-hed Fort Carion (Ticonderoga) on Lake Champain. There the British were defeated. n 1759 The British under Genera Jeffery Amherst pushed beyond Lake George to Lake Champain. The British seized Fort Carion, renamed it Fort Ticonderoga, and then occupied Fort St. Frederic (Crown Point). During this campaign, Fort George in the Lake George Battefied Park was constructed. n 1763 The Treaty of Paris ended the French & Indian War with the British victorious. n The American Revoution Lake George was the scene of warfare with the Batte at Diamond Isand in 1777, and severa miitary actions at Fort George incuding Careton s Raid in Aso, ocated here was the smapox hospita for the American army in Now, take this tour to experience the Coonia Wars in Lake George!

This site is cose to Montcam s 1st battery. During construction on the grounds of the Od Courthouse in the 1970s, a French cannon ba was unearthed. n 2 Artiery Cove Marine Viage Resort, Canada Street 0.2 MILES 44ft coonia soop raised near here in 1903 Marine Viage Resort is nested around Artiery cove. Part of the mote sits on a fied area which once was part of Artiery cove (Pease don t enter the mote grounds uness you are a guest. It is private property). In August 1757, this is where Marquis de Montcam, a briiant French genera, anded cannons and mortars for an assaut upon Fort Wiiam Henry, and thus gave the cove its name. Montcam took a force of severa thousand French reguars, French Canadians, and Native Americans from the Champain Vaey to attack the British and provincia stronghod at Fort Wiiam Henry. Montcam s armada (shown in the iustration coming into the cove) incuded 31 pontoons carrying artiery, 250 bateaux (25-35 ft. ong fat-bottomed warships), and about 150 canoes. n LAKE GEORGE Miion Doar Beach 3 Montcam s Camp Historic Marker 0.2 MILES ON THESE GROUNDS MONTCALM S ARMY CAMPED DURING THE SIEGE OF FORT WILLIAM HENRY AUGUST 6-9, 1757 Across the street from Marine Viage Resort Mote is a historic marker at the site of Montcam s 1757 camp. The French siege of Fort Wiiam Henry has been popuarized in James Fennimore Cooper s 1826 nove, The Last of the Mohicans, and by movies of that tite. From August 3-9, 1757, Montcam s forces successfuy aid siege to the British and provincia Fort Wiiam Henry and a nearby breastworks and encampment. The siege invoved the French attacking the 17 ft. high Fort Wiiam Henry s northwest wa. After severa days of heavy artiery bombardment, Lieutenant Coone George Monro, the commander of the British-ed forces, capituated and agreed to an honorabe surrender. Monro s troops were then ambushed on August 10 th by angry French-aied Native Americans as the British and provincias retreated to nearby Fort Edward. The Native Americans were upset because they had been promised the spois of war by the French, but the British-French agreement negated that promise. Approximatey British and provincias were isted as kied or missing. The number kied in the massacre was probaby not as high as popuarized by Cooper s book. n

3 4 Sunken Feet Historic Marker 0.4 MILES FALL 1758 BRITISH/AMERICANS SANK RADEAU LAND TORTOISE, SLOOP HALIFAX, 260 BATEAUX, TO AVOID WINTER PLUNDER BY FRENCH RAIDING PARTIES This marker was erected in 1993, by the Lake George Historica Association and Bateaux Beow, Inc., two oca not-for-profit educationa corporations. Foowing the fa of Fort Wiiam Henry in 1757, the British and provincias returned to the ake in Part of the British strategy for 1758 was an attack upon Fort Carion (Fort Ticonderoga), a French fortress on Lake Champain. In Juy 1758, a vasty superior British and provincia force was defeated by the French at Carion. The British and provincias retreated to their base at the south end of Lake George. They began a massive boat buiding campaign with pans to attack Carion ater that year. As the cod winds of autumn approached, the British and provincias reaized they coud not aunch an offensive against Carion in So, they began the deiberate sinking of much of their feet in the ake s shaows, pacing the warships in a wet or cod storage for the winter. Many of these vesses were retrieved from the ake in 1759 and reused. This was once one of the greatest scuttings of warships in miitary history 260 bateaux were sunk. These were the utiitarian watercraft of the times. Fatbottomed, pointed at bow and stern, and some ft. ong, many of these bateaux were buit in Abany and Schenectady and transported overand to Lake George. In 1992, seven sunken bateaux were nominated to the Nationa Register of Historic Paces by Bateaux Beow, Inc. They are isted on the Nationa Register and are aso part of a State underwater park for scuba divers caed Submerged Heritage Preserves. A soop named the HALIFAX, with a 51 Feet Kee, was ikewise scutted in In 1759, it was raised and reused. Row gaeys and whaeboats were aso part of the sunken feet. However, the prize of the sunken feet was the 52 ft. ong radeau, LAND TORTOISE. Not recovered in 1759, it was discovered in 1990, and then surveyed by Bateaux Beow, Inc. and the LAND TORTOISE Radeau Survey. This foating gun battery was pierced for seven cannons and is the ony radeau-cass warship found for archaeoogists to study. In a remarkabe state of preservation, due in arge part to its 107 ft. depth, the radeau is North America s odest intact warship. n Radeau LAND TORTOISE Montcam s Entrenchments MILES Shepard Park is the site where one of severa British coonia docks was supposedy ocated. The area ies just east of Montcam s 890 yd. ong entrenchment where the French army dug trenches to bring siege artiery coser to Fort Wiiam Henry. As you ook up the hiside of Shepard Park, you can amost hear the cannon and mortar fire and voices of the French in their entrenchments. Today, this is one of severa beautifu parks in Lake George which had coonia miitary action. n 6 Warship Row and the Mayor Robert M. Bais Wakway and Park 0.7 MILES Severa sma signs mark the beginning of this popuar wakway aong the ake. As you proceed east aong this wakway you tread over 18th century history. Near here from , were encampment grounds for mosty provincia troops. In March 1757, the French attacked Fort Wiiam Henry by crossing the ice-covered ake. Without artiery, the French had scaing adders, hoping to take the fort, garrisoned with ony 346 men and 128 invaid sodiers. Though the fort was not captured, the French reported burning hundreds of bateaux pued up on shore near the fort as we as two soops, thus giving the area the name Warship Row. When the French retreated, a buidings around Fort Wiiam Henry were on fire; ony the fort survived. You are aso near the area where Robert Rogers and his Rangers came in December 1757, when they examined the burnt ruins of the once proud Fort Wiiam Henry. It had been destroyed in August 1757, by Montcam s forces before they returned to Carion. Fort Wiiam Henry This area in front of the fort was aso used by the British and provincias during their 1758 and 1759 campaigns. Remnants of sunken bateaux ying off this shore have been expored by divers and archaeoogists. That egacy of maritime history continues today. Shoreine Cruises, Inc., one of the ake s tour boat companies, is ocated not far from the southwest corner of the ake. n 7 Lake George Steamboat Company and Stee Pier 0.9 MILES Less than 40 years after the American Revoution, in 1817, the Lake George Steamboat Company was started. Today, their arge cruise boats are tied up at the Stee Pier, a famous Lake George andmark constructed in In 1903, a 44 ft. coonia soop was raised from the ake near this spot. Coincidentay, the Stee Pier ies not far away from one of the coonia piers, reminding us that history often repeats itsef. The Lake George Steamboat Company offers informative boat tours which describe for their passengers the ake s history, geoogy, and imnoogy. n 8 Miitary Dock Historic Marker 1.2 MILES DURING THE FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR, BRITISH AND PROVINCIAL TROOPS USED A DOCK NEAR HERE FOR LOADING SOLDIERS, ARTILLERY, AND SUPPLIES. In June 1992, the Lake George Historica Association and Bateaux Beow, Inc. erected this historic marker. Historians suggest at east three coonia docks were present at the south end of Lake George in 1757: one near present-day Shepard Park, one by Fort Wiiam Henry, and a third near this Burning vesses

Since much of the area east of Fort Wiiam Henry was known as A Great Swamp, docks heped the British and provincias oad and unoad their sodiers and provisions. n Radeau Warship 9 Historic Marker 1.4 MILES LAND TORTOISE, BUILT BY COLONIAL AND BRITISH TROOPS, NEAR THIS SITE IN 1758, LIES 2 MILES NORTH IN 107 FEET OF WATER. This marker was erected in 1995, by Bateaux Beow, Inc. In 1990, a 52 ft. ong radeau named the LAND TORTOISE was found in Lake George by principas of Bateaux Beow, Inc. using a Kein side scan sonar. From the vesse was studied. In 1994, it opened as a New York State Submerged Heritage Preserve, an underwater museum for visiting divers. The site has a pastic chain supported by PVC posts buit around it to discourage divers from touching this fragie warship. In 1995, the LAND TORTOISE, caed North America s odest intact warship, was isted on the Nationa Register of Historic Paces. The Land Tortoise was designated a Nationa Historic Landmark in 1998 by the Department of the Interior. For information on the preserves, contact: Lake George Submerged Heritage Preserves, New York State Department of Environmenta Conservation, Region 5, Route 86, Box 296, Ray Brook, New York n Batte of Lake George 10 September 8, MILES 1903 THE SOCIETY OF COLONIAL WARS ERECTED THIS MONUMENT TO COMMEMORATE THE VICTORY OF THE COLONIAL FORCES UNDER GENERAL WILLIAM JOHNSON AND THEIR MOHAWK ALLIES UNDER CHIEF HENDRICK OVER THE FRENCH REGULARS COMMANDED BY BARON DIESKAU WITH THEIR CANADIAN AND INDIAN ALLIES. DEFEAT WOULD HAVE OPENED THE ROAD TO ALBANY TO THE FRENCH. CONFIDENCE INSPIRED BY THIS VICTORY WAS OF INESTIMABLE VALUE TO THE AMERICAN ARMY IN THE WAR OF THE REVOLUTION. This 13 ft. high monument is ocated in Lake George Battefied Park, a faciity operated by the New York Department of Environmenta Conservation. The monument reportedy stands near where provincia Genera Wiiam Johnson s command tent was ocated. Here King Hendrick is showing Johnson that he shoud not divide his troops before the Batte of Lake George. Hendrick is giving Johnson arrows bunched together to signify strength in numbers. n Fort George Ruins MILES In June 1759, British Genera Jeffery Amherst arrived at Lake George and soon proceeded to buid a new fort at the ake. The site was the high ground east of the ruins of Fort Wiiam Henry, which had been destroyed by the French in A provincia officer described the fort as the Was [are] about 14 Feet thick Buit of Stone & Lime. In 1760, Amherst said of Fort George: the bastion encosed at Fort George is very neat, mounts 15 guns, is very sma and a bad defense, but twas the shortest, cheapest & best method of finishing what was begun of the Fort. This bastion is the ony part of the panned fort that was finished. In May 1775, Fort George was captured by patriot forces under Captain Bernard Romans. The British-hed fort was garrisoned by a singe person a 65 year od caretaker named Captain John Nordberg. On Juy 16, 1777, American Major Christopher Yates set fire to Fort George as the British approached. The British then utiized the fort as a vita ink for Genera Burgoyne s suppy route from Canada toward Abany. After Burgoyne s defeat and surrender at Saratoga on October 17, 1777, the Redcoats retreated from the Lakes Champain-George corridor and the Americans again gained contro of the fort. In October 1780, British Major Christopher Careton took Fort George. Careton burned the fortification and retreated north. In 1819, Professor Benjamin Siiman from Connecticut, provided insight into the condition then of Fort George: we observe one of the od barracks, formery beonging to the fort, now exhibiting a tavern sign, and, ti within a few years, constituting the ony pace of accommodation to those who visited Lake George. Eventuay oca peope used the fort as a quarry and most of the fortification vanished. Archaeoogica studies under the direction of Dr. David Starbuck over the ast few years have identified many previousy unrecognized features in the Park incuding remains of foundations within the stockaded fort, hut sites and the Fort itsef. Hundreds of reevant artifacts have aso been found and studied. During 2015 and 2016, intact sections of was identified as part of bomb proofs and barracks have been found within the fort itsef. A was have been carefuy reburied to maintain their preservation. The fort s remains are administered and protected by the New York State Department of Environmenta Conservation. It is iega to damage the bastion s ft. high was. n 12 Native American Historic Statue 2.0 MILES In the center of Battefied Park is a bronze statue of a Native American. According to a State document he is dipping water in the cup of his hand from a spring. This fine statue is a memoria to the Indians who once freey roamed the region. The statue was dedicated in 1921, and was a gift from George D. Pratt. Native Americans payed crucia roes in the area s eary history. As many as Native American tribes, some from as far away as Mississippi, fought in the August 1757 siege of Fort Wiiam Henry. This statue represents these eary Americans prior to

5 the advance of the Europeans. The statue was repaired and rehabiitated through donor contributions to Warren County Historica Society on the occasion of the 250th Anniversary of the French and Indian War. n 13 Unknown Sodiers 2.1 MILES A MEMORIAL TO FOUR UNKNOWN SOLDIERS WHO FELL SEPTEMBER 8, 1755 ON THE BLOODY MORNING SCOUT LED BY COL. EPHRAIM WILLIAMS AND KING HENDRICK AGAINST THE FRENCH AND INDIANS UNDER BARON DIESKAU. This bronze and granite monument was erected to the four unknown sodiers buried there. These human remains were discovered in 1931 by workmen whie excavating for a cuvert near the Coone Ephraim Wiiams Monument on Route 9, ocated south of Lake George. These bones were ater identified by Dr. Arthur C. Parker of the Rochester Museum of Art and Science as a the skus are of Europeans. The study aso determined the men died of head wounds. Thus, the remains coud be from the September 8, 1755, Boody Morning Scout (the first part of the Batte of Lake George). In this batte 1,000 provincias and 200 Native Americans were attacked whie they marched south aong the Od Miitary Road. The provincias were ed by Coone Wiiams of Deerfied, Massachusetts, and the Native Americans by the 63 year od Mohawk chief caed King Hendrick. Both were kied in this ambush. Though the Boody Morning Scout was a victory for the French and their Native American aies, the Batte of Lake George was eventuay won by Genera Wiiam Johnson and his forces as the French and Native Americans, under Baron de Dieskau, faied to take advantage of their initia success. As a footnote, Wiiams s wi created funds for the buiding of Wiiams Coege in Massachusetts. n 14 Knox Cannon 2.15 MILES THROUGH THIS PLACE PASSED GEN. HENRY KNOX IN THE WINTER OF TO DELIVER TO GEN. GEORGE WASHINGTON AT CAMBRIDGE THE TRAIN OF ARTILLERY FROM FORT TICONDEROGA USED TO FORCE THE BRITISH ARMY TO EVACUATE BOSTON ERECTED BY THE STATE OF NEW YORK DURING THE SESQUICENTENNIAL OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION In the eary part of the American Revoution on May 10, 1775, Ethan Aen and his Green Mountain Boys captured Fort Ticonderoga from the British. Fort Wiiam Henry had severa two story barracks, magazines for storing artiery and other armament, storehouses, and even a arge encampment east of the fort in what is now Lake George Battefied Park. The fort survived a major assaut in March 1757, when the French, ed by Francois-Pierre de Rigaud de Vaudreui, crossed ice-covered Lake George and attacked the fort. Without artiery and siege equipment, the French reied upon scaing adders. Though the French burned a structures around the fort incuding many boats, the French coud not take the fortress and they soon retreated. In May 1993, Fort Wiiam Henry modified an outdoor exhibit on the site of the od coonia cemetery. The exhibit portrays the 1950s excavation and subsequent dispay of human skeeta remains from the 1757 siege and massacre. In 1993, human skeeta remains were examined by Dr. Maria Liston, an anthropoogist from the Adirondack Community Coege. According to Dr. Liston, the information from the skeetons can suppement, and at times verify the historica accounts, providing detais of ife not avaiabe from other sources. The [fort s] sodiers suffered not ony from warreated trauma, but from pronounced physica stress, often in conjunction with infectious disease.
