BOARD QUESTIONS 1) WHAT IS A BLOCKADE? 2) WHAT WAS THE AVERAGE AGE OF A SOLDIER IN THE CIVIL WAR? 3) WHO WON THE BATTLE OF BULL RUN AND HOW? 4) HOW DID THOMAS JACKSON GET HIS NICKNAME? 5) WHAT SIDE WAS THOMAS JACKSON ON?

TERMS AND PEOPLE FIRST BATTLE OF BULL RUN THOMAS STONE WALL JACKSON BLOCKADE RUNNERS MERRIMACK IRONCLAD ULYSSES S. GRANT

TERMS AND PEOPLE BATTLE OF SHILOH CASUALITIES DAVID FARRAGUT PENINSULAR CAMPAIGN ROBERT E. LEE JAMES E.B. STUART

TERMS AND PEOPLE JEFFERSON DAVIS BATTLE OF ANTIETAM AMBROSE BURNSIDE

FIRST BATTLE OF BULL RUN THE UNION WITH 30,000 INEXPERIENCED SOLDIERS ATTACKED THE CONFEDERACY. WHO ALSO HAD INEXPERIENCED SOLDIERS. THE CONFEDERACY HAD LESS TROOPS AT BULL RUN. AT FIRST THE NORTH PUSHED THE SOUTH BACK.

FIRST BATTLE OF BULL RUN THE SOUTH WERE INSPIRED BY REINFORCEMENTS LEAD BY GENERAL THOMAS JACKSON THOMAS JACKSON EARNED A NICKNAME FROM THIS BATTLE. BECAUSE HE STOOD SO FIERCELY DEFIANT TO THE NORTH S CHARGE AND FOUGHT THEM OFF. HE WAS GIVEN THE NAME STONEWALL

FIRST BATTLE OF BULL RUN BECAUSE OF THE CHARGE BY THE SOUTH THE NORTH BEGAN AN ORGANIZED RETREAT. WHICH QUICKLY TURNED IN TO A STAMPEDE OF UNION SOLDIERS DROPPING THEIR WEAPONS AND RUNNING. THE SOUTH WAS SO SPREAD OUT THAT THEY COULD NOT PURSUE.

FIRST BATTLE OF BULL RUN BEFORE THE FIRST BATTLE OF BULL RUN THE NORTH BELIEVED THE WAR WOULD NOT LAST LONG. AFTER THE BATTLE THE NORTH BEGAN TO FEAR A LONG WAR WITH THE SOUTH. THIS DID NOT STOP THE DETERMINATION OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN TO RESTORE THE NATION.

FIRST BATTLE OF BULL RUN HE CALL FOR MORE VOLUNTEERS. HE SIGNED TWO BILLS REQUESTING A TOTAL OF ONE MILLION SOLDIERS. LINCOLN AS APPOINTED A NEW GENERAL TO LEAD THE UNION FORCES IN THE EAST. GEORGE B. McCLELLAN.

WAR AT SEA AT FIRST THE NORTH DID NOT HAVE ENOUGH SHIPS TO BLOCK ALL OF THE 3,500 MILE COASTLINE. SO CONFEDERATE SHIPS CALLED BLOCKADE RUNNERS COULD SAIL IN AND OUT OF SOUTHERN PORTS. AFTER A WHILE THE NORTH WAS ABLE TO BUILD ENOUGH SHIPS TO STOP THE BLOCKADE RUNNERS.

WAR AT SEA THE BLOCKADE CAUSED THE SOUTH MAJOR PROBLEMS. A BLOCKADE CAN NEVER TOTALLY STOP EVERY SHIP FROM GETTING IN AND OUT. BUT IT DID STOP MORE THAN 2/3 S OF THE SOUTH S TRADE. GOODS SUCH AS COFFEE, SHOES, NAILS, SALT, GUNS, AND AMMUNITION WERE IN SHORT SUPPLY.

WAR AT SEA THE SOUTH HAD ENOUGH OF THE BLOCKADE. THEY TOOK A NAVY YARD IN NORFOLK, VIRGINIA. THE NORTH HAD LEFT A UNION WARSHIP THE MERRIMACK BEHIND. THE SOUTH SAVAGED IT AND PUT THICK IRON PLATES ALL AROUND IT.

WAR AT SEA ON MARCH 4TH 1862 THE MERRIMACK RENAMED THE VIRGINIA ATTACKED A GROUP OF UNION SHIPS OF THE COAST OF VIRGINIA. THE WOODEN UNION SHIP WERE NO MATCH FOR THE IRONCLAD. THE CANNON BALLS JUST BOUNCED RIGHT OFF THE SIDES OF THE IRONCLAD.

WAR AT SEA THE NORTH HAD ALREADY MADE IT S OWN IRONCLAD AND RACED IT DOWN THE COASTLINE TO MEET THE VIRGINIA IN BATTLE. FEARING THE VIRGINIA COULD DESTROY THE NORTH S WHOLE NAVY.

WAR AT SEA ON MARCH 9TH THE TWO IRONCLADS ENGAGED IN BATTLE. NEITHER SHIP COULD SINK THE OTHER. THE NORTH DID HOW EVER MANAGE TO TRAP THE VIRGINIA IN A HARBOR. SO THE IRONCLAD COULD NOT DESTROY ANY MORE WOODEN WAR SHIPS.

WAR IN THE WEST AFTER BULL RUN THE WAR IN THE EAST BECAME A STALEMATE. EACH SIDE BUILDING THEIR FORCES IN THE REGION. EACH SIDE TRAINING TROOPS. TRYING TO TURN CITIZENS INTO SOLDIERS.

WAR IN THE WEST IN THE WEST THE UNION WANTED TO TAKE CONTROL OF THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER. THIS STARTED AT A PLACE CALLED CAIRO ILLINOIS. UNDER GENERAL ULYSSES S. GRANT THE NORTH BEGAN ITS OFFENSIVE IN THE REGION. WITH IRONCLADS ON HIS SIDE GRANT TOOK OVER TWO FORTS.

WAR IN THE WEST GRANT REPLIED UNCONDITIONAL AND IMMEDIATE SURRENDER. THESE VICTORIES KICKED THE CONFEDERACY OUT OF KENTUCKY WERE THEY HAD BEEN TRYING TO DRUM UP SUPPORT TO LEAVE THE UNION. GRANT BECAME THE NEW HERO OF THE NORTH.

BATTLE OF SHILOH IN MISSISSIPPI GRANT AND HIS 40,000 TROOPS CAMPED AT A CHURCH GROUNDS CALLED SHILOH WAITING ON REINFORCEMENTS FROM NASHVILLE. THE CONFEDERATE ARMY DECIDED TO ATTACK BEFORE REINFORCEMENTS ARRIVED. ON APRIL 6TH 1862 THE BATTLE OF SHILOH BEGAN.

BATTLE OF SHILOH THE BATTLE LASTED TWO DAYS AND WAS ONE OF THE THE BLOODY FIGHTS OF THE WAR. THE FIRST DAY THE CONFEDERATES DRIVE GRANT AND HIS TROOPS ALL THE WAY BACK TO THE TENNESSEE RIVER. THE SECOND DAY THE UNION RECOVERED WITH THE HELP OF 25,000 REINFORCEMENTS FOR NASHVILLE.

BATTLE OF SHILOH THE CONFEDERATES WERE PUSHED BACK TO CORINTH.
