Bottom line profits came in at EUR 15.8 million, comfortably beating the 2014 figure, despite reduced turnover. Increased profitability follows our decision to install sulphur scrubbers on most of the Finnlines fleet. Refits meant some ships were out of action in the early part of the year, which partly explains the drop in earnings. When these ships re-joined their trading lanes they were able to burn standard bunkers rather than the more expensive distillates required by European Union legislation for vessels plying the North Sea, Baltic Sea and English Channel. Pollution was scrubbed from vessel emissions, while the fuel Printed in August Circulation: 20,000 copies

SCRUBBERS ARE PART OF A EUR 100 MILLION ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNOLOGY INVESTMENT PROGRAMME THAT ALSO INCLUDES RE-BLADING AND THE APPLYING OF SILICONE PAINT TO HULLS BOTH MEASURES THAT IMPROVE SHIP EFFICIEN- CY. THE RESULTS HAVE ALREADY BEEN IMPRESSIVE: IN THE FIRST SIX MONTHS OF THE YEAR WE MANAGED TO SAVE MORE THAN 22,000 TONS OF FUEL. VESTMENTS DIVIDENDS savings contributed to the Company s bottom line. These emissions abatement investments have been supported by European Union funds to the tune of almost EUR 18 million. Hansalink, Biscay and Germany ro-ro lines have all benefited under the EU s motorways of the sea programme. Scrubbers are part of a EUR 100 million environmental technology investment programme that also includes re-blading and the applying of silicone paint to hulls both measures that improve ship efficiency. The results have already been impressive: in the first six months of the year we managed to save more than 22,000 tons of fuel. Scrubbers are already up and running on 14 vessels and will soon be installed on the remainder of the Finnlines fleet. Repeat contracts have been concluded with Alfa Laval, Wärtsilä, and Ecospray (for scrubbers) and Rolls Royce (for re-blading). These will turn Finnlines into the first and unique case in the Baltic of a fully owned and scrubberequipped fleet. This is what may be called a healthy record and insurance policy for all our clients not depending on third parties ships. Thanks to this investment programme we can expect 2015 profits to continue to run ahead of last year s figures. Despite the cost of bringing in new technology, Finnlines was nevertheless able to reduce its debt by EUR 51 million in the first half of the year. The company s equity ratio rose from 37.2% to 41.1%. Our increasing financial strength has translated into higher earnings for shareholders, who have also benefited from an increase of 113% in share prices during 2014 and of further 13% up to July Finnlines was already awarded as one of the best performers among listed shipowners in 2014 according to the rankings released in June by Marine Money International. The company made the top ten up from 58 th place in 2013 and was number one in the ro-ro sector and number one in the total return to shareholders category in all shipping sectors. Elsewhere, diplomatic tension between Europe and Russia over Ukraine continues to depress trade to and from Russia, with knockon consequences for the Company s home market, Finland. During these challenging times we have successfully adapted by varying routes and capacity in order to consolidate market share. In June we added another northbound call to the core Travemünde Helsinki route. At the same time we increased tonnage on weekend Rostock Helsinki calls. Southbound, the St. Petersburg Rostock service has been strengthened, as has the Kotka Rostock mid-week call. On the passenger front, Finnlines continues to take measures to improve onboard comfort. In June we kicked off a two-stage facelift of the MS Finnpartner and MS Finntrader, which operate between Germany and Sweden. Passenger areas, including the Kid s corner and shops, are being spruced up with new interior designs and brighter colours. High-end cabins on Hansalink ships have also been given a makeover. 3

MS FINNTRADER AND MS FINNPARTNER WHICH TOGETHER FORM THE RELIABLE DAILY BACKBONE OF THE NORDÖLINK TRAFFIC ARE USED ACTIVELY DAY AND NIGHT. Finnlines has decided to invest in the passenger premises to increase the customer wellbeing onboard these vessels operating on the Malmö Travemünde route. The facelift is split into two parts. The first part will soon be finished and the second one will follow in September, after the summer high season. This is an important step forward as we are reacting directly on feedback from both cargo and private guests. I am curious to see the final result, even though we can already feel the new fresh breeze on board today, comments Antonio Raimo, the Line Manager of NordöLink. NEW COLOURS AND OPEN SPACES The facelift bases on a new entirety of colours and materials which welcome the customers immediately when entering the elevator on the car deck. The new bright Guest Service Desk on deck 4 forms the centre in this area. The entrance to the restaurant has been widened and feels even more welcoming now, avoiding also the bottlenecks when guiding passengers into the restaurant during the peak departures. I AM CURIOUS TO SEE THE FINAL RESULT, EVEN THOUGH WE CAN ALREADY FEEL THE NEW FRESH BREEZE ON BOARD TODAY The restaurant truly benefits from the new interior which makes it brighter and more inviting, creating a true Scandinavian atmosphere. The Scandinavian atmosphere continues on deck 6 with its wooden floor and blue furniture. The highlight of deck 6 is the completely rebuilt Kid s Corner, focusing now on a pirate ship theme. A new slide has been mounted for our smallest guests and furthermore space has been created for playing creative games, whilst the parents can enjoy a drink or a coffee from our renewed bar. A new bar assortment will be introduced in autumn! HARMONISING THE ATMOSPHERE Development is also happening further north. In the end of June, the Owner s and Junior Suites of the Star-Class vessels employed in Helsinki Travemünde traffic benefitted from an interior upgrade, creating a maritime atmosphere in the largest, high-end cabins. Welcome onboard NordöLink and HansaLink vessels to feel and experience the new atmosphere, recommends Kristiina Uppala, the Head of Customer Service. 5

SAFETY FIRST ARTICLE SERIES ON THE SAFETY ISSUES IN SHIPPING The new Safety First -series introduces some of the safety matters concerning the shipping business: issues like securing the cargo, protecting the environment and assuring the health and safety of the personnel. We begin with the basics: the first part covers some of the principal international regulations and standards on multimodal transport chain. The next part of the article series will be published in Finnlines News 3/2015. Welcome onboard! STANDARDS AND REGULATIONS GUIDING THE CARGO SAFELY TO ITS DESTINATION THE TRANSPORTATION OF GOODS ON LAND AND ON SEA HAS THROUGH DECADES BEEN RULED BY NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL REGULATIONS MAKING SURE THE TRANSPORT IS SAFE, NO GOODS WILL FALL OUT OF VEHICLES AND THAT THE STABILITY OF THE VEHI- CLES ON ROAD OR ON SEA IS NOT ENDANGERED. Cargo, cargo units and cargo transport units shall be so packed and secured within the unit as to prevent, throughout the voyage, damage or hazard to the ship and the persons on board. Appropriate precautions shall be taken during loading and transport of heavy cargoes or cargoes with abnormal physical dimensions to ensure that no structural damage to the ship occurs and to maintain adequate stability throughout the voyage, states the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, SOLAS. For those working with cargo the aim is clear but the technical standards have fallen short in clearly defining the practices, e.g. dimensioning the strength of items involved. Hence, new regulations have been published and standards updated. THE CODES ON HOW TO LOAD, STOW AND SECURE THE GOODS The cargo information, which is required when shipping loads, includes dimensions like the gross mass of the cargo unit and the size of the load. This information can be through several methods converted into numbers, strength and dimensions for securing the cargo. The codes for loading, stowing and securing are based on basic acceleration values. This approach has been chosen for practical reasons; a simplified static standard level is defined in a fairly straightforward way, avoiding the complicated and uncertain dynamical models. The strain and physical loads on goods and their packaging can be evaluated considering the Newton s 3 rd rule on force and counter force the packaging should be able to withstand the load s mass and the securing forces that cause strain to the packaging during the voyage. For reasons such as economical factors, some parties consider doing less than these guidelines and standards require or advice, but this kind of risk-taking can have severe economical impacts not to mention causing a potential hazard to people and the environment. These safety standards should not be overlooked, as for example a vehicle on sea losing stability could cause major damage for the cargo and the transportation vehicle itself, it would endanger the working conditions and the health of the employees as well as the safety of the environment. So the consequences are not merely an economical issue but also include the risk of criminal liability. When it comes to safety, cutting costs is a bad idea. TRAINING AN EFFECTIVE WAY TO ENSURE SECURITY The best way of making sure safety matters are handled correctly is to have a trained staff with up-to-date knowledge on safety regulations and standards. It is advisable for the companies to assess their training needs. They need to define and apply issues relevant on each level of operation, so that the employees in different roles can adopt the proper ways of working, ensuring safety and quality throughout the whole intermodal transport chain. In the next Finnlines News Safety First article we will have a more hands-on approach to cargo safety at Finnlines. >>> 7

>>> STANDARDS AND GUIDELINES IN A NUTSHELL > International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS): Often regarded as the most important of all international treaties concerning the safety of merchant ships, the main objective of the SOLAS Convention is to specify minimum standards for the ships to ensure their safety. On stowage and securing of cargo, more detailed definitions are given in the Code of safe practice on cargo stowage and securing, along with technical instructions and examples, that are interpreted into the vessel specific Cargo Securing Manuals (CSM). The purpose of the CSS Code is to provide an international standard to promote the safe stowage and securing of cargoes and cargo units onboard vessels. > Standard , 2010 edition. Load restraining on road vehicles - Safety - Part 1: Calculation of securing forces: Even if the heading refers to road transport, the basic dimensioning accelerations on different sea areas on European coast lines as well as calculation methods for basic cargo securing have been given. The majority of European governments have replaced the national requirements and old standards with this common European standard. > Cargo securing for road transport European best practices guidelines: This book, often referred to simply as Best Practice Guidelines or BPG, provides practical advice and instructions on loading/unloading and securing cargo including advice on vehicles to all the persons involved, reaching from carriers to shippers. These guidelines aim to provide a tool for adequate cargo securing for situations that may occur in normal traffic conditions. They also serve as a basis for training for drivers. BPG has been translated into 22 different European languages. > EU-co-operation project CARING Cargo securing to prevent cargo damages on road, sea, rail and air took place between October 2011 and November 2013 with the aim to create up-to-date learning material, namely Presentation Material, a Teacher s Manual and a Student Book. > IMO/ILO-UNECE Code of Practice for Packing of Cargo Transport Units (CTU Code). As many disruptions and accidents in transports originate from defective packing, stowage, support and securing of goods into transport, a new code for Cargo Transport Units (containers, trucks, railcars, flat racks, roll trailers, swapbodies etc.) the CTU code has been published at the end of This code goes deep into the technical knowledge and skills required for the tasks, the responsibilities of the parties involved, choice of units, documentation and training requirements. As a non mandatory global code of practice for the handling and packing of shipping cargoes, the CTU-code serves as reference guide in preparing CTU s for transport of goods by sea and land. It also provides material with specific instructions on training. Although the CTU code is voluntary it should be understood as serious advice and can also become a basis for international harmonising of the legislations. 8

LOGISTICS AND TRANSPORT TRADE FAIR ATTRACTED 12,500 VISITORS Shiny trucks with massive tires, containers, forklifts, Ports and of course various logistics professionals took over the Expo and Convention Center in Helsinki on May when the biggest Logistics and Transport trade fair in the Nordic Countries was held.
