3 volume trends have reversed, and we are now happy to announce that the Europalink will be rejoining Finnlines early next year on the Germany / Sweden trade. As an ice-class vessel with Scandinavian-standard passenger facilities, including saunas, she is ideally suited to the colder northern climes. She is being retrofitted with closed-loop-ready scrubbers on all engines, as well as a wash-water filtration system. As a result, she will produce lower levels of air emissions (sulphur dioxide, particulate matter) than ships running on lowsulphur fuel. SLOTTING THE VESSEL BACK INTO THE FINNLINES ROTATION will also trigger reshuffling elsewhere in the network. The MS Nordlink, which boasts more than 4,200 lane metres, 200 cabins and a capacity for 500 cars, will be redeployed on routes between Finland and Sweden, where customers have invited us to increase capacity. The Nordlink will be one of the first ships of this size plying the trade between the two countries. CAPACITY INCREASES DO NOT STOP THERE. We have already engaged in an over EUR 40 million ship-lengthening programme at a Polish yard. Four of our Jinling-built vessels will as a result enjoy a capacity increase of 30%, meaning they will be able to carry up to 4,000 lane metres of rolling cargo. Work is already underway and is set to be completed by the middle of next year, after which we have the option to lengthen another two vessels. Such is the size and flexibility of the Grimaldi Group fleet that we can ensure customers that these upgrades will take place without frequency disruptions. URNS TO FINNLINES RS FLEET EXPANSION REVENUE FOR THE QUARTER WAS UP AROUND 10% TO EUR 145 MILLION. Year to date revenues in September increased by the same percentage up to EUR 405 million. IN RESPONSE TO GROWING VOLUMES and thanks to continued profitability, we are expanding the Finnlines fleet. The MS Europalink was in 2013 sold by Finnlines to the parent company because of insufficient volumes in the Baltic. Growth forecasts were revised downwards following the 2008 crisis and some routes were over-tonnaged. Since that time however, AS SOME OF YOU MIGHT HAVE READ IN THE TRADE PRESS, we are investing heavily not just in Finnlines but across the whole Group. In September, we announced orders for six ro-ro newbuilds and four options, bringing the Group s ongoing capital expenditure programme to over EUR 2 billion. These ships will boast innovative designs such as an air lubrication system creating bubble layers beneath the hull to reduce friction and consumption, as well as solar panels, electrical pumping systems, hydrodynamic bulb-shaped hulls, and pitch-propeller systems. WE BELIEVE ENVIRONMENTAL INVESTMENTS, and fuel efficiency in particular, will determine which players survive, and which thrive, in the markets of tomorrow. 4 Emanuele Grimaldi elected Vice-President of the ICS On 10 May 2017, Emanuele Grimaldi, President and CEO of Finnlines Plc and Managing Director of Grimaldi Group S.p.A., was elected Vice-President of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS). ICS is the main international shipping association based in London, which includes shipping companies and associations from over 37 countries and represent all shipping sectors with over 80% of the world fleet. Being elected to the top of this important organization is such an honour for me, said Emanuele Grimaldi. It is of fundamental importance to be present in an international assembly where maritime strategies are elaborated, deepening operational and legal issues, of maritime labour, of best practices and of the development of sustainable maritime transport. Finnlines sells a ro-pax vessel as part of optimisation strategy As part of Finnlines strategy to optimise the use of vessels and routes in order to improve its profitability, the Company has sold the ro-pax vessel MS Finneagle to the Grimaldi Group. MS Finneagle was chartered out to the Grimaldi Group from June The capacity of the 1999-built vessel is 2,459 lane - metres and 835 passengers. 4

5 Save native species The Ballast Water Management Convention has entered into force Ballast water is essential to control ships trim, draught, stability and stresses. However, when ballast water is taken in one port, for example in the Bay of Biscay, and pumped out in the Baltic, the water may carry harmful aquatic organisms and pathogens, which outcompete native species, disrupting the native ecology seriously. According to HELCOM (Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission), more than 130 non-indigenous species have appeared in the Baltic Sea since the 19th century. Globally, it has been estimated that ships carry 3,000 4,500 different species in their ballast tanks. The shipping community started to combat invasive aquatic species by issuing guidelines and national regulations some 30 years ago. In 2004, the International Ballast Water Management Convention was adopted by IMO. However, ratification took twelve years as the requirement was to have as many as 30 countries, representing 35% of world merchant shipping tonnage, to sign the Convention. Finally, it was Finland that triggered the entry into force and the Convention became effective on 8 September Today, ships must exchange their ballast water with an efficiency of 95% if they are not equipped with a treatment system. It must be noted that exchange involves hazards and it must be planned carefully in order not to risk ship s safety. In fact, the master is responsible for considering if the conditions, including vessel stability, allow exchange of ballast water. The master may suspend ballast operations in adverse weather and sea conditions. Ships operating exclusively in the Baltic Sea are exempted from the exchange requirement as the geographic location requirements are not met. The distance must be at least 200 nm from the nearest land (or at least 50 nm if 200 nm is not practicable) and water depth must be at least 200 m. Ships must be fitted with ballast water treatment equipment no later than The due dates for equipment installations are linked to the ship s IOPP-certificate, which is valid for a maximum of five years at a time. There are several treatment technologies, such as ultra violet light and electro chlorination, and more than 60 type-approved systems on the market. Nevertheless, each ship is individual and many parameters must be considered during decision taking. A treatment system, which works well in the Mediterranean, may be inefficient in the Baltic where salinity of water is lower and temperatures colder. Finnlines has investigated ballast water treatment options, but we expect technologies to make great progress in the near future. The shipping industry welcomes the Convention although it faces many challenges in implementing the new requirements. 5

Together across the Baltic challenged everyone especially our own personnel and customers to be more active and exercise together for a great cause. Our intention was to collect as many nautical miles as our ro-pax vessel is plying on over 70 trips between Helsinki and Travemünde. In kilometres this is 79,240 km. EXERCISE ACROSS THE BALTIC IN MANY DIFFERENT WAYS Our passengers and cargo customers have contributed to this project on their journeys between Helsinki and Travemünde by writing down all workout kilometres to a logbook. There were plenty of exercise modes to choose from, for example running on the treadmill, using the rowing machine or cycling on the exercise bike at the gym. Furthermore, our personnel has participated in the project as well and collected workout kilometres, for example from their hobbies or daily way to work. Every meter has helped us to get closer to our target of 79,240 exercise kilometres by the end of In addition, we arranged family events for the general public in Vuosaari and Naantali harbours in Finland in late summer. Besides the joy of exercising, the participants became familiar with a variety of Finnlines ferry trips and had the opportunity to visit one of our Star Class vessels. In return for all the kilometres collected, Finnlines will support childhood cancer research by donating EUR 50,000 to the Aamu Pediatric Cancer Foundation. The foundation and its important work was presented in these envents in Vuo saari and Naantali to the participants. 6

S PROJECT TOGETHER ACROSS THE IN ORDER TO CELEBRATE THE CENTE- THE AAMU PEDIATRIC CANCER FOUNDATION The purpose of the Aamu Pediatric Cancer Foundation is to guarantee, even on an international level, the best possible treatment and healthy adulthood to Finnish children who have suffered from cancer. Clinical researches and the development of cancer treatments is sponsored by the foundation funds. Finnlines donation helps Aamu Foundation to be part of a new worldwide research programme concentrating on the development of children s hepatic cancer treatments (Paediatric Hepatic International Tumour Trial, PHITT). In return for everyone s participation Finnlines will donate EUR 50,000 to the Aamu Pediatric Cancer Foundation. More information on 7

9 Finnlines to gain from additional berth capacity at the Port of Naantali The Port of Naantali, located in south-western Finland, has started construction works to extend an existing quay from 178 metres to 228 metres in order to create additional vessel handling infrastructure. This will support Finnlines plans to expand its traffic between Finland, Åland and Sweden enabling Finnlines larger vessels to enter the port. According to the Port of Naantali the ongoing port investment programme will amount to approximately EUR 4 million. The Port of Kapellskär in Sweden has also been expanded and now has five modern quay-berths. These investments in Naantali and Kapellskär support our strategy to optimise the use of our vessels and routes. This also enables us to develop our traffic between Finland, Åland and Sweden and the use of all our vessel types and more flexible use of the fleet. These investments will strengthen Finnlines services and we can serve our customers even better and meet their growing demand for top quality cargo and passenger services, said Tom Pippingsköld, CFO, Finnlines Plc.
