In the second quarter we enjoyed a bottom line result of EUR 14.7 million again, the best quarter in eight years. Car volumes and passenger numbers were both up compared to equivalent figures for Over the first half of the year we shipped approximately 325,000 units of freight (up 5,000), 39,000 cars (up 9,000) and almost 1.2 million tons of non-unitised freight (up from 1.07 million). Table prepared by Finnlines. REMARKABLE TURNAROUND PERFORMANCE Volume increases are however only a small part of this success story. We are beating a path towards real profitability thanks to measures such as vessel optimisation, debt reduction, ship sales and better use of existing tonnage. Every line, every vessel, and every cost function are undergoing or have already undergone analysis with a view to cutting costs and thereby improving profitability. We cannot afford to run loss-making services. Looking back, it is fair to say that the turnaround in Finnlines performance has been remarkable; no need to say that such achievements wouldn t have been possible without the right people. I believe I can say that since eight years I m sitting in the Board of Finnlines, I ve never had a level of management as good as it is today. The latest figures are in fact among the best in the company s history. Finnlines was hit hard during the crisis of 2008/2009, and has since then been making a slow recovery. This year that recovery has started to accelerate. It is crucial to complete our transformation this year, ahead of the entry-into-force of the European Union s sulphur fuel rules on January 1, Thanks to a substantial capital expenditure programme we are confident we are now well placed to meet this challenge. ECO-FRIENDLY INVESTMENTS PLACED Following extensive negotiations with the major manufacturers of emissions abatement technology scrubbers we recently placed orders for 14 out of 16 ships operating on medium-long routes, to be installed at the end of this year and the beginning of Finnlines is set to be one of the best equipped fleets in terms of scrubbers in the markets we serve. These vessels will be able to continue to burn heavy fuel oil because pollutants will be cleaned or scrubbed out. Thanks to the scrubbers, vessels will be fully compliant with the new regulations. As part of our investment programme we have also ordered new propulsion systems for four Star-class ro-pax vessels and two Finnpulp type ro-ro vessels. These re-blading projects will be completed over the turn of the year. New propellers and rudders, with improved design, should substantially improve propulsion efficiency and as a result, help us reduce fuel consumption further. SURCHARGES INTO A SUSTAINABLE LEVEL Fuel has always been a large percentage of the operating costs of all commercial vessels. But fuel consumption has become more critical than ever in the sulphur emissions control areas, where we ply the bulk of our trade. Without scrubbers, ships will be obliged to run on distillate fuels that are substantially more expensive. Lines will not be able to absorb these increased costs and will therefore have to pass them on to their customers. There is a lot of talk in the marketplace about Marpol surcharges for shippers from January Given Finnlines successful cost-cutting programme, we believe surcharges can be kept to a sustainable level a level that will not trigger a shift in cargo from sea to road haulage. This year is shaping up well. We can calmly state that we expect the Group s full-year result before taxes to improve. Emanuele Grimaldi 3

HansaLink: A star among both passengers and truck drivers PASSENGERS OPTING FOR THE EVER-POPULAR HANSALINK SERVICE BETWEEN FINLAND AND GERMANY ARE INCREASINGLY AWARE THAT THEY ARE MAKING A DECISION TO REDUCE THEIR CARBON FOOTPRINT, ACCORDING TO THE LINE S MANAGER. Comfort and convenience have been joined by a growing awareness that ferries are less damaging to the environment than taking overland routes. Our passengers are thinking more about pollution and its risks, says Kielo Vesikko, Line Manager HansaLink, Finnlines. They are more and more conscious of the environment. This makes a difference when they come to make their choice. HansaLink s speedy service has also been a big hit with truck drivers. The connection of around 28 hours is timed to ensure the fresh produce that their trucks carry arrives at just the right moment at its final destination: the market stalls. The service is quick enough to compete with overland shipments, and also long enough for truckers to get the rest they are legally obliged to take. And while they are on board, truck drivers enjoy the same facilities as holidaymakers. For them and all passengers the sauna and gym are included, for drivers also the meals. We have recently updated our buffet concept. The update has been very much welcomed both by leisure travellers and drivers, explains Ms Vesikko. EXACT SCHEDULES TO TIME-SENSITIVE NEEDS With room for over 500 passengers per sailing and a carrying-capacity in excess of 4,000 lane metres, the HansaLink service has proven to be the ideal combination of passengers and freight. The exact schedule suits shippers as it has been adapted to the supply chain, adds Staffan Herlin, Head of Group Marketing, Sales and Customer Service, Finnlines. Fresh food, vegetables and flowers are very time-sensitive; if these shipments are made to wait even for an hour, it s a problem. We have a large share of the Germany Finland market more than 50%. This is Finnlines star service and is now well established. With flexible vessels, the HansaLink service can attract both full loads and groupage cargo. Trailers are carried both accompanied and unaccompanied. LOYALTY CARDS TO FREQUENT TRAVELLERS Drivers who are regular customers are rewarded via a loyalty card that gives them onboard discounts and special offers. Frequent travellers are in some cases so familiar with the HansaLink service that they are on firstname terms with members of the crew. The combination of passengers and freight not only makes for a varied, unique experience for those travelling, it s also good business because tourists and cargo have different peak seasons. When cargo follows see their seasonable drop, passenger numbers pick up. 4

6 WRITERS ON BOARD MS Finnmaid FINLAND WILL BE THE HONORARY COUNTRY DURING THE PRESTIGIOUS FRANKFURTER BOOK FAIR IN OCTOBER FINNISH LITERATURE WAS PRESENTED ON BOARD THE MS FINNMAID ON A WORKSHOP FOR WRITERS AND JOURNALISTS. THE PREMISES PROVED TO BE IDEAL FOR WORKSHOPS. Books and reading go well together with the Finnlines mode of transport. During the 28 hours crossing from Germany to Finland or vice versa you will find the time to read a book, time which is so often lacking in the routines of our daily lives. A WORKSHOP FOR WRITERS AND JOURNALISTS In late March 2014 Finnlines had the honour to host a press trip on board the MS Finnmaid organised by the Press officer of the Finnish Embassy in Berlin, Merja Sundström, Finnlines and the FILI (Finnish Literature Exchange). Three artists presented their work in this workshop. The workshop originated from the idea of sea journey being a perfect match for writers and journalists: Why not show journalists this literature-friendly mode of transport, while at the same time giving them the opportunity of familiarising themselves with Finnish literature, without having to rush from one interview appointment to the next?! The idea of holding a workshop on board for journalists and writers was born. The workshop was supplemented by further meetings in Helsinki e.g. with Leena Lehtolainen, a crime author popular in Germany, as well as happenings related to the 100th birthday of Tove Jansson, the author of the Moomins. IDEAL SURROUNDINGS FOR WORKSHOPS The event proved that our premises are a good venue for workshops, as well as an ideal environment for authors, thanks to the calm and friendly atmosphere, supplemented by the lack of unnecessary distractions. His satirical novel The beggar and the hare is already translated and published in several languages, among them Swedish, Italian and German. Rosa Liksom, is a novelist, painter and action artist who won the Finlandia prize in Her prize winning novel Compartment number 6 is set during the year 1986, when the Soviet Union is beginning to open up. Two travellers, a girl and a man (a Finnish student and a 40-year-old Russian macho) take the train through Russia towards the mountains of Mongolia. Risto Isomäki, is an author, science journalist and environmental activist. In his books he warns about global warming and the dangers of nuclear power. He tackles those controversial topics in the form of a thriller. His most recent book Gods little finger about a giant solar power plant has been already published on the German market. Stefan Moster, one of the few German translators of Finnish literature, completed the workshop. He gave some valuable insights into the Finnish book industry and trade and brought some light into the characteristics of the Finnish language and the difficulties of transferring it into German without losses in style or dialects. take part in the workshop as well, representing important German magazines and newspapers like Die Zeit, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Der Spiegel, could find places for interviews in the lounges or bars. Thanks to the crew and service staff of MS Finnmaid, the whole group had a great time on board. 6

9 Finnlines re-starts its Tilbury service Due to continual requests from customers, Finnlines decided to re-open its Tilbury service in August. This weekly call from the Finnish ports of Kotka and Helsinki arrives at Tilbury on the river Thames, London, on a Wednesday. The Port of Tilbury is just 7 miles from the M25 orbital motorway, which gives easy access to the South of England consumers via the national motorway network. Before returning to Finland the vessels call at Amsterdam and the Antwerp Euroterminal (AET), which is the Grimaldi Group North Continental regional services hub. This allows our customers access to all of the Grimaldi network of routes and also the choice of a one-way cross Channel option. The Tilbury call complements our services into Immingham and Hull thus allowing Finnlines to serve the whole of the Great Britain, in particular for our trailer operators.
