Appropriate tonnage and a willingness to adapt to changing market conditions creates efficiency savings without compromising customer service levels. With over 100 ships at our disposal, the Grimaldi Group has the flexibility to ensure we stay nimble when markets fluctuate. As well ensuring our controlled fleet is well placed, management knows when to dip in and out of the charter market. This knowledge and flexibility has been required in recent months due to the ongoing crisis in Russia and Ukraine, which has indirectly impacted Finland s industrial production, and therefore Finnlines. The Company s Russia links in particular the TransRussiaExpress and North Sea traffic have seen weaker demand, thereby increasing imbalances. A somewhat weaker demand is felt also for transportation toward Finland. Certain routes, such as the NordöLink service between Germany and Sweden, are performing very well, but the volume outlook for the region as a whole is weak. Despite this, and thanks once again to our cost-cutting programme, we are proud to be able to announce another set of very strong results. By spending less on bunkers, and reducing both ship costs and port call costs, we have more than offset the small decline in turnover. Printed in December Circulation: 20,000 copies

3 set of Finnlines results despite conditions Finnlines revenue was down by around 4.5% between January and September, to EUR million. But our bottom line result before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation shot up by over 44% to EUR 91.5 million. Over the same period, the Company s outstanding debt was reduced by almost EUR 100 million. The quarter between July and September saw our best result in eight years. Earnings per share were up almost 200%. These figures are first class considering that they have been achieved in difficult trading conditions. Looking forward, management knowhow and fleet flexibility will once again be put to the test in the coming months. From January, Finnlines ships will be trading within the first European emissions control area. To cope with the new rules, we have launched investments worth EUR 65 million. Fourteen of our 22 ships will be fitted with sulphur emissions scrubbers. This equipment will help us contain the costs the new emissions rules will bring. Compared to our competition, our so-called SECA surcharge will be among the lowest in the Baltic region. We will use this fact to launch a renewed quest for improved market share. Installation of scrubbers will require the dry-docking of a number of vessels within a short time span, mainly in late 2014 and early Vessels substitution within the Group, and timely use of the charter market, will help us manage these temporary withdrawals from service. There may be six months when small disturbances may be experienced in the service and we apologise for that. Finnlines management is working to limit time in dock and to fine-tune the schedule in order to keep disturbances to a minimum. We are proud to be working on delivering an even more efficient and competitive service to our clients. When combined with new, efficient propulsion systems, we are confident we can continue to keep costs down and continue to impress both shareholders and customers. After the first wave of scrubbers and propulsion system retrofits has been judged to have been successfully installed, and after they are performing to our satisfaction, we will proceed with retrofits for the remainder of the Finnlines fleet. 3

4 New environmental legislation How to choose the right strategy? AS OF JANUARY 2015, THE NEW FUEL SULPHUR LIMIT APPLICABLE IN ECAS (EMISSION CONTROLLED AREAS) IS 0.1%. THESE EMISSION LIMITS WILL HAVE A STRONG EFFECT ON THE MARITIME INDUSTRY AS SHIP OWNERS AND SHIP OPERATORS NEED TO CHOOSE THEIR OWN STRATEGY. Within the Baltic Sea, which is one of the areas concerned, there are approximately 30 ferry, ro-pax and ro-ro operators connecting the surrounding countries to each other. It has been estimated that about 8% of the world trade is taking place within this area and the majority of the people and goods are moved over sea. Four available options to choose from Every shipping company operating within the Baltic and the North Sea must choose one of the four basic options as from 2015: Avoid operating in the ECA area Switch to LNG (Liquefied natural gas, contains no sulphur) Switch to MGO (Marine gas oil, less than 0.1% sulphur) Install a SOx Scrubber and continue using HFO (Heavy fuel oil) 4

5 Finnlines vessel aft ship showing modern propellers and rudders together with extended hub caps and rudder bulbs There is no easy answer on which option is the best available to be applied for an existing vessel. Avoiding the Baltic Sea and the North Sea would solve this MARPOL issue but perhaps cause other problems that have worse consequences. Switching to LNG on an existing vessel means complicated retrofits that are both costly and can have a significant impact on cargo and passenger space. On some existing vessels this may even be impossible due to safety and regulatory issues and other constraints. LNG is not supplied in many ports, and building up a LNG bunkering service in ports may imply very heavy logistic, administrative, legal and operational costs, thus its utilisation is in many cases not possible. Whenever/wherever LNG is safely supplied instead, a question mark may arise over its price, because base price of LNG is today very volatile due to still very uncertain demand/offer dynamics, and because logistic costs of the supply chain can vary very highly from place to place. For example the price in the USA is only a fraction of what is paid in Northern Europe due to logistics mark up. Technically, the easiest option (if decided to continue operating in the Baltic and the North Sea) is to switch to MGO. Even this option usually requires some investments in cooling units and other parts of the fuel feeding system, especially if the vessel operates on different fuel types depending on traffic area. The biggest downside of choosing to run on MGO is, however, the historically high price difference between HFO and MGO that for sure will have a considerable impact on the competitive power for any shipping company. Last solution is to opt for installing scrubbers, which have rather high build up costs too, but guarantee maintaining same fuel blend usage as before and with relatively low loss of cargo capacity. Nevertheless, this kind of retrofit is normally possible and economically convenient only for operators of owned, young and large vessels. Finnlines environmental investments challenge & opportunity of the century Finnlines is no exception and needs to comply with the new SOx emission limits that take effect from January We are both well prepared and positioned for this challenge because in the last six years, we have been working on improving two important key ratios: consumption/ton transported and fuel cost incidence on company accounts. With such results obtained on a young, efficient and modern fleet as we have, we managed to bear in general a lower negative impact by tighter international environmental policies than the average of other operators. This is also the case with the new sulphur regulations that come into force. Improvements in reducing fuel consumption Since the economical crisis began in 2008, the Finnlines fleet fuel consumption has decreased by over 30% whereas the average unit deployed by us can carry in average 3,200 lm of cargo vs. 2,000 lm as average in These two facts alone reduced dramatically consumption/ton transported and fuel cost incidence. Moreover, when the majority of the Finnlines fleet in 2008 consisted of chartered vessels, 90% of all vessels are now fully owned. This is also an important factor, as it is always dependant on the ship owner what Hull Immingham Tilbury El Ferrol Bilbao Santander Antwerp Zeebrugge Aarhus Travemünde Lübeck Amsterdam type of investments can be done. Finnlines could invest in scrubber solutions more than any other player in its sector, with scrubbers installed on 14 out of 20 long term operated vessels in the fleet. Finnlines will continue exploring all possibilities to further reduce its fuel consumption and fuel cost incidence. This includes, but is not limited to, further optimising vessels and routes, more suitable route operating speed profiles, optimising trim and ballast and maintaining the underwater hull in good condition (with special paints and regular hull cleaning activities). On top of these efforts, after good experience from the latest ro-ro newbuildings, Finnlines will replace the original propeller blades by newly designed blades in six of its vessels and fit their rudders with bulbs that will further increase the propulsion efficiency by reducing rotational propulsion losses. All of these actions taken are expected to trigger considerable fuel savings equalling up to 10% of further fleet fuel consumption decrease. And that s not all: further investments in scrubbers, propellers and rudders are under study. SINCE THE ECONOMICAL CRISIS BEGAN IN 2008, THE FINNLINES FLEET FUEL CONSUMPTION HAS DE CREASED BY OVER 30%. WITH ALL THE INVESTMENTS WE EXPECT TO TRIG GER CONSIDERABLE FUEL SAVINGS EQUALLING UP TO A 10% DECREASE OF FURTHER FLEET FUEL CONSUMPTION. 6 Getting prepared for 2015: Finnlines response Investing in scrubbers SINCE YEARS BACK, FINNLINES AND GRIMALDI NAPLES TECHNICAL DEPARTMENTS HAVE CAREFULLY STUDIED THE DEVELOPMENT AND SOLUTIONS AVAILABLE IN THE MARITIME MARKET. Exhaust gas SOx scrubbers are by no means a new technique but it is only until the last few years that this technique has been applied onboard vessels. This new environment is adding a lot of complexity for the makers as they need to comply with a totally new legislation framework and battle with both weight and size restrictions that are not as common for other industries. Another aspect to consider is the harsh environment seafarers are already used to (incl. pitch and roll movements). After thorough assessment, we were convinced that there are systems in the market that really work and concluded that investing in scrubbers is the best strategy for our fleet. Once this step was taken, there were a list of decisions to make. How many vessels to be fitted with scrubbers? The initial investment plan comprised all owned ro-ro vessels plus one ro-pax vessel (as a trial). However, after further assessments, this program was enlarged to comprise 14 vessels in total. For the remaining Finnlines owned vessels (all normally deployed on our short routes, FinnLink and NordöLink), the immediate response after 1January 2015 is to switch to MGO. Which type of scrubber and scrubber configuration to choose? Marine SOx scrubbers are generally of the wet type. This means they scrub the exhaust gas either with seawater or with fresh water and an alkaline additive (usually caustic soda). This scrubber type can be configured to operate in three ways: Open loop, Closed loop or Hybrid configuration. Open loop scrubbers scrub the exhaust gas with seawater whereas Closed loop scrubbers are using (fresh) water mixed with an alkaline. In a Hybrid configuration, both open-loop and closed-loop modes are available. All scrubbers ordered by Finnlines are Hybrid ready. How to choose the right supplier? Today, there are several suppliers in the maritime scrubber market and even more that are eager to enter. However, there are just a few that passed the tight criterions set for our selection process. When shortlisting the candidates, a detailed analysis on access to core expertise, existing references, technological platforms used, delivery capability, project coordination capabilities as well as future service and support was done. After thorough negotiations, we ended up concluding agreements for 14 vessels with the three leading suppliers in the market. Six vessels (the latest ro-ro series) were awarded to Wärtsilä, the remaining four owned ro-ro vessels to Alfa Laval and four ro-pax vessels (Star-class series) to EcoSpray Technologies. How and where to perform the scrubber installation(s)? With such an extensive program, the yard and installation company selection process was not easy. Here again, we made a thor- 6

Source: Alfa Laval ough initial screening involving up to ten experienced partners before shortlisting the most convenient ones. At the end of July / beginning of August, we finally concluded the contracts with three different subcontractors dividing the scrubber installations between four ship repair yards within the Baltic Sea. This was done in order to maximise the economies of scale whilst reducing the risk of domino effect in case there would be a delay with the deliveries or the installation works for any vessel. A dream team to manage an extensive program Within Finnlines, several persons have worked almost day and night with this program. A dream team was quickly formed between key persons from Grimaldi energy efficiency department, Dario Bocchetti and Alberto Portolano, and the famous four as we have been nicknamed from Finnlines: Juha Ahia, Thomas Doepel, Mikael Lindholm and Tapani Voionmaa. Additional support has been received also from Grimaldi Naples office, especially Giancarlo Coletta, Corporate Purchasing Director, Grimaldi Group, Paolo Satariano, Corporate Technical Director, Grimaldi Group, and Naples-based lawyer Francesco Lauro, during the negotiation and contract phase which we are thankful for. There has also been a great support from our Technical Manager Aarno Pihala and all our Technical Superintendents in charge of the vessels involved both during the planning and installation execution phase. Now, as the installations have already commenced, there will be a much greater involvement of our Crew members with additional Chief Engineers involved to support during the commissioning and system acceptance phase. 8 A new concept for a ro-pax cruise NEW AT FINNLINES: TAKE A FIVE DAY CRUISE FROM HELSINKI TO TRAVEMÜNDE AND SPEND A DAY IN HAMBURG OR BERLIN. ENJOY THE RELAXING AND STRESS-FREE SEA VOYAGE! Finnlines has created two totally new and different ro-pax cruises in cooperation with Kristina Cruises: the Hansa Cruise and the Northern Germany Tour. Both cruises were tested in June 2014 and they received great reviews and are now in full service. The Hansa Cruise departs every Saturday and the Northern Germany tour every other Tuesday. And this is just the beginning of the great cooperation. We will also organise the Finnlines Christmas Cruise 2014 with Kristina Cruises while the two ro-pax cruises will continue to run in spring We are delighted to inform that the cooperation will also continue next autumn with new and interesting themed ro-pax cruises. The new cruise concept, in which Finnlines provides a relaxing atmosphere and Kristina Cruises a content-rich program, is what could be called a perfect match. The ro-pax cruise concept gets its twist from the fact that the cruises are done on our passenger-freight ships. An ideal partner Kristina Cruises, a Finnish family-owned shipping tour operator, has almost 30 years of experience in the cruise business. Founded in 1985, it creates experiences for customers that last a lifetime. Their business is like ours based on loyal customers. Kristina Cruises has given up its own vessels, but instead created a wonderful new product portfolio using good partners all around the world Finnlines is proud to be one of them. Cruise program activities on board All Kristina Cruises products include a Finnish Group leader who is in fact more like a host or a hostess, taking care of the passengers and providing hospitality throughout the cruise. They are there to create an experience. With a relaxing atmosphere, wonderful meals and pleasant entertainment, Finnlines and Kristina Cruises make sure that the passengers will enjoy an unforgettable cruise experience. The entertainment onboard varies depending on the Group leader, for example lectures and quizzes are arranged during the day. There is also a Question and Answer hour during which passengers can hear more about the Finnlines concept and the ship they are travelling on. After dinner the Group leader arranges more entertainment consisting of e.g. either wine or whiskey tasting. The evening continues with singing by the bar. Hansa Cruise The cruise departs Saturday evening from Helsinki. Passengers arrive in Travemünde Sunday evening, but instead of embarking, they stay onboard for the night since the vessel stays in the port as well. Monday morning they venture out to explore Hamburg and Lübeck by bus and waterbus. After enjoying a traditional dinner in Lübeck, the group is brought back onboard. Tuesday morning the vessel departs to Helsinki. Northern Germany Tour The cruise departs Tuesday from Helsinki and arrives in Travemünde Wednesday evening. From Travemünde passengers make their way to Hamburg for the night. In Thursday there is time to explore Hamburg before heading to Berlin. The evening is spent in Wismar and from there the passengers return to the ship. Arrival time in Helsinki is Sunday morning. 8

9 Photographer: Hans Christian Jacobsen A wing of windmill on board MS Finnpulp Finnlines transported a windmill s wing from Rostock to Aarhus onboard MS Finnpulp in October for on-carriage to Aalborg (northern part of Denmark) for testing at Blade Test Centre A/S in Aalborg. The wing was 58.4 meters long and 3.3 meters wide, but due to the special shape of the wing, the height was 4.4 meters. The total length of the vehicle and wing was 63 meters. New service to Paldiski, Estonia Finnlines has widened its North Sea services by adding a new port of call in the Baltic Sea, Paldiski Northern Port in Estonia. The vessels to be used in the service are three of the latest ro-ro vessels currently deployed in the North Sea / Biscay service. The vessels are designed to load ro-ro, container and project cargoes as well as cars and vans on dedicated car decks. There will be a direct weekly connection to Paldiski from Spain and Belgium, and via Antwerp also from Great Britain and the entire Grimaldi-ACL network. From Paldiski the vessel sails to St. Petersburg and Kotka Helsinki Rauma. The port of Paldiski offers very good rail connections to Central Asia and Siberia.
