2 Welcome Welcome! We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your interest in our program and for taking the time to look at this catalog. We welcome you to view the information that we have assembled through this catalog as well as additional material on our website such as videos of the bulls and carcass ultrasound information. The additional information was not available at the time that this catalog was printed so we are attempting to get that information to you as easy as possible. We want to make any information that will help you in your selection of genetics available to you in the easiest possible way. What a difference a year can make from 2011 being abundant in hay and grass, to 2012 being very little hay and the grass from 2011 carrying us through the summer and fall of On a normal year hay aftermath provides some extra kick nutritionally, this year there was none available and weaning weights refl ect that. We fi nd that the cattle that weather challenges from the environment like this past summer are meeting the demands that we have placed upon them. They produce a calf from birth to weaning, breed back and require very low inputs to produce profi table outputs. The 2013 offering of bulls continue to offer a consistent pattern with width of base, thickness over the top line, along with structural correctness to provide longevity to the new owner. There are numerous bulls in the offering that are able to be used on heifers with confi dence. New to the offering this year is a group of SimAngus bulls. We selected two of our top proven cows and fl ushed them to two top proven Simmental bulls. Through this endeavor we are offering customers that want to crossbreed an alternative. As you look through the catalog and EPDs, you will notice some changes within the EPDs. The Red Angus Association in cooperation with the Simmental Association have produced multi-breed EPDs that allow you the producer to compare Red Angus cattle to the Simmental cattle and the Gelbvieh cattle on a level playing fi eld. As these changes were implemented the breed averages have changed, but the percentile rank with the breed has not. EXAMPLE: A Proven sire that previously had a 62 YW EPD now has an 83 YW EPD but he is still only average. Obviously, he s the same bull, so he s still an average bull his 21-lb. increase in YW EPD mirrors RAAA s 21- lb. increase in the YW EPD base (reference from American Red Angus Magazine January 2013, or page 8 of this catalog). SALE FORMAT: Once again we will be offering the bulls through a rancher s auction. We will have an auctioneer that will auction the sale in a relaxed atmosphere. Announcements made by seller on sale day take precedence over any statements printed in this catalog or advertisement. DELIVERY We will provide delivery up to 300 miles. Over 300 miles we will work with the buyer to make arrangements on delivery. A $50 credit per bull will be applied to the purchase price of the bull if the new owner picks up the bull(s) on the day of the sale. Delivery of the bulls will start the week after the sale. BULL HEALTH PROGRAM The bulls received Vision 7 at branding and then are pre-conditioned in September with Pfizer One Shot Ultra 7, Bovishield 5 Gold. The bulls were poured with Ivermax in October and boostered with Bovishield 5 Gold. The Fusiguard was boostered in January and they were poured with Dectomax at this time. Semen evaluations are performed by Don Beck of the Fallon Co. Vet Service prior to the sale with all evaluations available sale day. BULL DEVELOPMENT The bulls are fed on a ration to develop them into sound functional useable bulls for big country. They are fed to gain 2.5 lb per day. The ration consists of whole kernel corn (7.5 lbs), distiller s grain (1.5 lbs), and a mix of ground grass/alfalfa hay and ground hay barley. This ration is developed to use 1% of the feed base being grain to reach our goal of 2.5 lb gain. They have been developed at Bruce & Eric Bowman s feedlot which is located 1 mile south of Rhame, N.D. SEMEN INTEREST Milk Creek Reds is retaining one-half revenue-sharing semen interest in all bulls in the sale. The retained semen interest by Milk Creek Reds allows us to collect semen, use semen on the bull in our herd, as well as share in semen revenue if the bull would develop interest to be used in other herds or semen marketing companies. Multi-breed EPD base simplifies selection Since 2010, the Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) and the American Simmental Association (ASA) have combined their growth and carcass datasets to provide commercial producers with the most reliable EPDs in the beef industry. In the summer of 2012, RAAA and ASA adopted a common base for Growth (BW, WW, YW, Milk) and Carcass (MARB, YG, CW, REA, FAT) EPDs so that all animals registered in either RAAA or ASA can be directly compared regardless of breed makeup. What is BASE? For decades, each breed association has presented EPDs in their own language (the base). Base is no more than a reference point for any trait against which subsequent generations of animals are compared. The establishment of a base ensures that the population future generations are compared to remains stable, which allows the breedʼs genetic trend to be accurately identified. Raw Genetic Value + Base Adjustment = Published EPD Study Percentile Ranks Percentile ranks are an easy reference and therefore a powerful tool to assist you in becoming accustomed to the new multi-breed base. Red Angus EPD percentile ranks are presented along with all active animalsʼ EPDs, and reference how animals compare within their respective Red Angus subpopulations, i.e. Sire Summary Sires, Active Dams, Non-Parent Bulls, etc. Itʼs important to realize that although the multi-breed base allows for the direct comparison of Red Angus and Simmental EPDs, the percent ranks for Red Angus animals will continue to simply compare the genetics of Red Angus animals against other Red Angus. Thus, an animal that was in the top 10% for growth under the old Red Angus base will still be in the top 10% for growth in the new Red Angus multi-breed base. Example: In the past, you preferred to purchase bulls that had a -2.0 or lower BW EPD. Since a -2.0 on the old RAAA base represented the top 20% for BW, you now need to use -2.7 as your critical selection threshold as that represents the top 20% for BW on the new multi-breed base.
