I can imagine that everyone is tired of the snow, cold, and wind this year and looking forward to spring and green grass! The bulls this year have again been fed at the Hould Feedlot in Malta. We would especially like to thank Bruce, Linda, and Lance with the rest of the crew for the care and work that they put in. Our bulls look better than ever and we can never express how grateful to the Hould crew that we are. We are very proud of this set of bulls. It is without a doubt that this set of bulls will be the best that we have ever been able to offer for auction. They are uniform and sound from the first bull in the sale to the final bull in the ring. We don t breed for any specific EPD or number we just try and breed cattle that we like. Moderate framed, deep bodied and ribbed, easy fleshing, big topped and thick butted. Out of all of the EPDs the $W really is the most valuable to cow calf producers. The American Angus Association describes it as follows: Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for pre-weaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk, and mature cow size. Without selecting for it our bulls this year will average over $60.00 for the $W value and rank in the top 10% of the breed for $W. Obviously we are cow/calf producers and the cattle that we like over generations should be the most profitable for cow and calf production. I guess what I am trying to say is that these bulls will go out and make you money. A special feature this year will be 50 replacement heifers from Sam and Dana Knox. Sam and Dana live and ranch just north of us in the Coffee Creek and Wolf Creek breaks. They consistently raise one of the premier sets of steers in central Montana. They are like peas in a pod. These heifers will be the same quality. They were raised in the breaks and will know how to go work for a living and make great cows. First Year Breeding Guarantee The bull mortality and loss of use insurance which we offered in years past is no longer available. For this reason, we are now offering a first year breeding guarantee. We hope this breeding guarantee is a suitable replacement. All bulls selling for $2000 or more will be covered 50% by Hilltop Angus Ranch if they are injured during their first breeding season. Breeding season is defined as the 90-day period following the first turnout of the bulls. 50% of the value of the injured bull will be given as credit in a future sale or towards a replacement bull if one is available. Salvage value, if any, will be split equally between Hilltop Angus Ranch and the buyer. All injured bulls must be diagnosed by a veterinarian.
