3 GREATER ST. LOUIS AREA COUNCIL, BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA PROGRAM GUIDE THIS IS SCOUTING Success in life often comes down to making the best of any situation. Scouting hands youth situations, and shows them how to make the best of them. Whether it s through navigating the world of computer programming, gathering food donations, or figuring out how to lead a group through the woods with a map and compass, Scouting helps youth realize what they re truly capable of doing. Since 1910, the Boy Scouts of America has helped build the future leaders of this country, from astronauts to schoolteachers. Today, with over 2.4 million youth members and 1 million adult volunteers, Scouting is one of the most influential youth organizations in the country. 5 SCOUTING PROGRAMS Cub Scouts. Through fun activities, challenging adventures and community service projects, Cub Scouts make new friends and discover the importance of cooperation, citizenship, responsibility and physical fitness in their everyday lives. (girls and boys in grades k-5) Boy Scouts. Scouting is the ultimate form of learning by doing. Youth lead their own activities and participate in service, outdoor adventures, and leadership development programs. Scouts are introduced to countless hobbies, interests, sciences, and even future career choices. (boys ages 11-17; girls can join beginning February 2019) BENEFITS OF SCOUTING Scouting provides experiences that help prepare youth for their future. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership skills, and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives. Scouting fosters the spirit of discovery for future innovators and leaders by investing in new and relevant programs such as STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). These programs also provide youth with a platform to learn important life skills that will help them combat major societal concerns. Scouting provides youth with programs and activities that allow them the opportunity to: TRY NEW THINGS PROVIDE SERVICE TO OTHERS BUILD SELF-CONFIDENCE REINFORCE ETHICAL DECISION MAKING Exploring. Career exploration and work force development program. Youth gain practical insight and hands-on knowledge in a career field of their choice. (young women & men age or 13 years old & completed 8th grade) Venturing. Provides positive experiences through exciting and meaningful youth-run activities for pursuing special interests, growing by teaching others, and developing leadership skills. (young women & men age or 13 years old & completed 8th grade) For the parents watching in awe, it s not a question of where their Scout will go, but where won t they go. Scouting helps parents make the most of the little time they have to impact the lives of their children. Scouting gives parents the gift of seeing their children reach their full potential by challenging them in ways they may not otherwise experience. 3 stlbsa.org Program Guide

FRIENDS OF SCOUTING Friends of Scouting (FOS) is the annual giving campaign of the Greater St. Louis Area Council. The FOS campaign provides nearly 20% of the Council budget every year. That means nearly a quarter of every dollar in the council budget comes from the generosity of Scouting families, alumni and community supporters. Without this funding, our council could not supply the resources necessary to provide a quality, adventure-filled scouting program. Each gift to GSLAC provides tremendous assistance such as: insurance for leaders and participants improving camp properties for your Scouts and future Scouts underprivileged youth have opportunity to join regardless of financial situation volunteer training stlbsa.org Program Guide 16
