2 Mentoring and Disciple Making The purpose of this missions discipleship experience is to aid boys and men in developing the skills necessary to become effective on-mission Christians who carry out the Great Commission to make disciples as they are going. We will use camping and other outdoor activities to provide opportunities for participants to interact with and learn from other Christian men and boys. Christian men from around the state will be with us during the weekend to share their passions, tell their stories, and demonstrate how God uses the things men love to do to enable them to reach other men and boys who love to do the same things. Participants will be free to choose from a wide variety of interactive stations on Saturday. They will get a chance to learn from and talk with everyday missionaries as well as full-time vocational missionaries. There will be live demonstrations as well as opportunities to try their hand at various activities. Camp O Rama 2017 features several new activities including group and individual competitions for all age groups. 5 CAMPCRAFT COMPETITION Rules and Descriptions 1. The State Campcraft Contest will be a part of the annual Camp O Rama Missions Event for boys in 1-6 grades and the leaders. Team Registration forms will be available at the registration table on Friday night and at the Campcraft Competition Site. 2. General Rules A. There will be three (3) divisions in the Campcraft Contests: 1. Grades Grades Leaders (including teens and adults) B. Each person may participate in the contest one time only. C. There must be at least two (2) team members and no more than five (5) participants on each team. D. The contest will be RELAY style. A judge will use a stopwatch in each contest. The judge will add 10 seconds per item to final time for any errors. E. The Individual Relays 1. Log Sawing The team begins behind the starting line. When the judge says Go, the team races to the saw buck that has a 4 log (fence post) on it and a bow saw. The team may use any safe Buddy System to saw approximately one inch off the log. Hands and legs must be away from the saw blade and remain behind the bow saw where the hand grips are. If the judge sees that the team is sawing in an unsafe manner, he will say Stop, point out what needs to be corrected, then allow the team to continue until they have finished sawing. Time will continue to run from the start until the end that is sawed off hits the ground which stops the team s time. 2. Knot Tying Four (4) knots will be selected at random by the judge from the following knots: Overhand, Figure Eight, Square, Clove Hitch, Bowline, Double Half-Hitch. One or any combination of the team members may tie knots, but the relay tagging rules must be followed. The first boy goes to the 5
6 rope, ties one knot given him by the official and returns to the starting line. He tags the second team member who runs to the rope and ties the second knot given by the official. This continues until four of the six knots are tied. Any knot or knots tied incorrectly will result in a 10 second penalty per knot. Team members must continue to take turns in succession until the knot is tied correctly. In the event that no team member can tie the specified knot, the team will be disqualified from the knot tying event and cannot compete in the tent pitching and be considered for the overall camp craft award. 3. Tent Pitching All team members stand behind the start-finish line, which is 20 feet from the tent pitching area. Time begins when the judge says Go. The team runs to the tent that has the poles rolled inside with tent ropes wrapped around it and tied in square knots. Two hammers and eight stakes are in a bucket. The team pitches the tent using the eight tent stakes placed properly one at each corner, two for the tent poles, and two for the side ties. Tent stakes must be driven at least halfway into the ground. Zippers may be left open. When the judge thinks the tent is properly pitched, (tent standing reasonably straight with no team member touching any part of the tent, ropes or stakes), he will say, Strike. The team then strikes the tent, places the hammers and the eight stakes in the bucket, rolls the tent poles inside the tent, wraps the ropes around it and secures the tent and poles with square knots. Time will stop when all items have been secured and all of the team members are back across the start-finish line. The tent should be rolled tightly enough to fit back in the original box from which it came. There is a seven (7) minute time limit for the boys and a five (5) minute time limit for the leaders. F. All equipment for the contest will be provided by the State Office. Several contest lanes will be provided for individual team relays during the day. G. Final decisions and interpretations of rules will be made by the Campcraft Contest Director. III. AWARDS Medals will be awarded to each of the team members that complete each of the individual Campcraft relays. Teams that have completed all three individual relays will have their total times calculated to determine the overall Campcraft event winners in the three divisions. Prizes will be given to the top 2 teams in all divisions.
7 2017 MISSION/MINISTRY PROJECT CAMP CLEAN-UP Supplies needed: gloves, rakes, leaf blowers Our mission focus this year will be Spring Lake Baptist Assembly. This summer alone saw 245 new believers and 295 respond to a call to ministry. Darryl and the many volunteers at Spring Lake are committed to seeing people come to faith in Christ and become growing disciples. We want to take this opportunity to give back and to serve those who serve so many others during the year. After our morning worship on Saturday and before we begin our stations, all campers will participate in an hour long service project. We will be clearing and cleaning up the path leading from the All People s Village to the prayer garden. In addition we will be cleaning up the area around the different houses. You will also be given instructions to help you lead your group to prayerwalk the area. Gloves are recommended for each boy and adult. If you can bring rakes and/or leaf blowers that would be helpful as well. Please tmccormick@absc.org with any questions regarding our ministry.

11 During Camp-O-Rama Allow boys to set up as much of the camp as possible on arrival. Dig fire pit, set up tents, etc. This takes patience but helps them learn! 2. Be sure trash is regularly picked up. (Be sure to bring trash bags!) 3. Please be respectful of the other campers and encourage your boys to be quiet after lights out Friday and Saturday night. (11pm) 4. All tent doors face the campfire. 5. No live fire when no one is present to tend the fire. This is extremely important. 6. We would like each campsite to be a no trace campsite. Our area should look the same when we leave as when we arrived! When building your fire, dig the sod out of the area for the fire and store on a plastic bag. At the end of Camp-O- Rama, clean the fire pit and replace the sod so there is no trace of your group being there. Make sure to bring a shovel for your group to use. If you use rocks please be sure to clear these out of the camping area before you leave (lawn mower blades do not like rocks). If you plan to leave wood behind, make sure you throw it into the woods and away from the grassy area. Note: Camp-O-Rama will only be canceled in the case of severe weather. Also note on the Friday night schedule that you have a substantial amount of free time with your group after the worship time. This is a great time for you to use to build relationships with your boys. YOU are responsible to prepare for this time. Call Travis at , ext or tmccormick@absc.org if you need suggestions for planning your group time.
