2 Camp Director s Message Congratulations on selecting Camp Levi Levi for your true wilderness camping experience this summer. Camp Levi Levi is nestled in the Hualapai Mountains Range near Kingman, Arizona, at an elevation of 7,400 feet. It is the setting for a great Scouting experience for your scouts and adult leaders. We guarantee that you and your troop will be talking about this camping experience for years to come. The Scout Motto is Be Prepared, and coming to Camp Levi Levi it is important to come prepared for a full week of outdoor camping, cooking, hiking, and just enjoying the great outdoors. Begin your preparation and training early to ensure all will enjoy this very special camping experience. As Camp Levi Levi is located on land controlled by the Mohave County Parks, we are subject to any fire restrictions that may be in force during the week of camp. It is a good idea to check with the Camp Director and the BLM Kingman Office for any restrictions in force or possible changes that will take place during camp. 3 ABOUT THIS BOOK When the first settlers moved to Arizona, they had to do everything for themselves. Scouts this summer will still have a bit of roughin to do, but with this guidebook in hand, they should be prepared for a Great Camping Experience. This book is geared to inform not only the Scouter who is sure his unit is coming to camp, but also for the prospective troop. In here, you will find clear descriptions of what camp has to offer in merit badge programs, high adventure activities, patrol and troop activities and special features of the camp. An almanac is a guidebook of sorts in that it collects hundreds of facts and data in a handy pamphlet for easy reference. We hope you will find this almanac complete. But, if for some reason you cannot find an answer to your question, please feel free to contactt Sandy Hess, Camp Director or Steven Hess, Program Director at (928) or (928) HOW TO GET HERE From Las Vegas, remain on the main road to Kingman. Turn right at the third light onto Andy Devine. Follow Andy Devine to the second light and make a right turn onto Hualapai Mountain Road. Continue up the mountain until you reach the Ranger Station. Stop at the Ranger Station and let them know that you are with the Boy Scouts. As you enter the park stay to the right and follow the signs for the hiking trails. When you reach the end of the road and come to the BSA Camp gate enter the gate code. Contact the Camp Director prior to leaving for camp as the gate combination may have changed. After you enter the gate it is approximately 1.7 miles to camp. Remember to stay to the left after you enter the last gate. Check in with the Camp Director at the Trading Post upon your arrival.!!!!!!if YOU ARE PULLING A TRAILER A 4X4 VEHICLE IS MANDATORY AFTER LEAVING THE PAVED ROAD. 5 CAMP FEES $80.00 Per boy if unit is paid in full before March 27, 2014 $ Per boy if paid after March 27, 2014 $15.00 Per adult at camp -- This applies to everyone at camp. $ Per boy attending as a Provisional Scout. Provisional Youth have an extra charge for food and 2 camp shirts - $ A Provisional Scout is a youth who are not attending camp with their own registered unit. This money is to be brought with you to camp. A $50.00 NON REFUNDABLE DEPOSIT IS REQUIRED TO HOLD A SITE FOR ANY AND ALL TROOPS. CAMP SITES ARE BEING ASSIGNED ON A FIRST PAID FIRST SERVED BASIS. GET YOUR REGISTRATION IN EARLY TO MAKE SURE YOUR FAVORITE CAMP SITE IS RESERVED! All registrations wil be done online and campsites can be selected after your unit is paid in full. Non-payment of these fees jeopardizes your troop campsite reservation. A commitment for 100 paid scouts 8 weeks prior to camp will ensure that we are able to purchase program supplies and equipment. All required leaders accompanying their troop to camp do so with a $15.00 charge to help off-set the cost of propane, port-a-potties, and water. Two adults (one over 21 years of age must be with each group of scouts at all times. All leaders or parents accompanying the troop to camp must have Youth Protection Training. Please bring your certificate with you. CAMP LEVI LEVI RESERVATION REFUND POLICY: All except for the non-refundable amount of $50 is refundable at the discretion of the Director of Support Service and the Camp Director. All requests for refunds needs to be submitted in writing to the Council Office, an is acceptible. Contact Donna Sword at donna.sword@scouting.org for any refund requests. Be sure to let the Camp Director know you are not coming also. No refunds will be made for cancellations within two weeks of your arrival date. This will include no shows and scouts who leave the camp during the week for any reason. HEALTH FORMS MEDICAL INFORMATION ADULTS All adults participating in a long term camping experience must have a current health history supported by a medical evaluation Use the new Health Form that is available on the Las Vegas Area Council website, These medical evaluations must be performed by a physician licensed to practice medicine. SCOUTS All scouts attending summer camp are required to have a medical evaluation form completed by a physician licensed to practice medicine and this must be within the past 12 months, along with an annual health history attested to by the parents or guardian. Use the new Health Form that is on the council website. The approved Health Form also contains an authorized form for emergency treatment. This section must be signed by the parents or guardians of all minors attending camp. Camp Levi Levi Leader s Guide 2014 Page 4

6 A first aid station is provided at camp. Trained first aid personnel are on duty at all times. Serious injuries or illness requiring hospitalization will be transported to the Kingman Regional Medical Center. We take pictures at camp every day. Please make sure that the parents are aware that it is their child s responsible to notify us that they are not allowed to be included in any pictures that other people/staff may be taking. MEDICATIONS All medications brought to camp will be checked in with the Camp Health Officer with the exception of inhalers and epee pins. 3. For any boy to try for more than 4 merit badges in one week would make the experience of working towards those merit badges difficult and frustrating. 4. Many badges have advance work that will need to be completed prior to camp. The smart scout is that one that comes to camp with all of the written work completed for the badge that they are working on. 5. Scouts should try something that is different at camp and have a well rounded experience. 6. Come to camp prepared. Have your patrols organized and they should know their camp responsibilities prior to arrival. 7. Make patrol camping areas. Your campsite is your home for the week, so work at making it comfortable by bringing your patrol flags, troop flag and US flag to camp, dress up your camp site and show Scout Spirit. 8. Don t forget to schedule rest. If you are rested, you will feel better and be up to the challenges of the day. EXPERIENCE TELLS US... In years past, some of the comments made by scoutmasters in their evaluations suggested the need for a section about, Experience has shown us that.... This is a collection of what experience has taught us regarding merit badges and advancement. 1. Summer camp is not a merit badge mill where you pay a fee and get 4 badges automatically. Instead camp offers merit badges as one portion of the overall program. 2. For the first-year camper, generally speaking he should try for no more than 4 merit badges (one of which should be First Aid). 9. Be Spirited! The troop that comes to camp with ideas and spirit makes the rest of the camp come alive. Bring your troop cheer to camp and show everyone that you re # Be flexible. Staff is there to meet everyone s needs. A Scout is friendly, cheerful, and courteous. 11. Communicate. If you have a special need or want to do something spectacular, tell us about it and we will give it our best shot. 12. One last thing. 7 FLAG CEREMONIES Mandatory camp wide flag ceremonies are held at 8:30am and at 5:00pm each day at the flag pole area near the Trading Post. All scouts may wear their activity (Class B) uniforms for opening ceremony only. All scouts and leaders are required to attend closing ceremony in full field (Class A) uniform. INSURANCE All troops attending Camp Levi Levi will be required to bring proof of accident insurance. Most units obtain this insurance during the annual recharter process. If you have any questions about the proof of insurance, please contact the Council Office at (702) if your unit is from Las Vegas or your local council office if out of council. TRANSPORTATION All troops must provide their own transportation to and from camp. Arrival time is between 1:30 pm and 4:00 pm on Saturday. Troops may also arrive on Sunday from 1:30 pm until 4:00 pm. If at all possible units need to be at Camp prior to Sunday evening at 4:00 pm. Units that are arriving on Monday need to contact the Camp Director concerning merit badge sign up. Departure from camp is not later than 12 Noon on Saturday. All transportation of scouts must be in compliance with BSA and Las Vegas Area Council policy. NO SCOUTS OR ADULT LEADERS ARE TO BE TRANSPORTED IN THE BED OF A PICK UP TRUCK!!!! VEHICLES IN CAMP Private vehicles may be driven to the camp site to unload the troop equipment. Then the vehicle should be parked facing out in the event we need to evacuate camp. Vehicles should not be driven through camp during the week unless permission is granted by the Camp Director. VISITORS Parents and friends are welcomed any time. The Friday night campfire is an especially nice time to visit. All visitors must sign in and out at the Trading Post before visiting the campsite. Friday we encourage Webelos and their parent(s) to come and see what we do and to help them qualify for their Arrow of Light award. If your Webelos Scouts are coming to camp, please contact the Camp Director prior to camp. UNIFORMS Why do scouts have a uniform? For the same reason any sports team does, to show that every member is equal and to give them a sense of belonging. At camp the uniform does just that. It can be worn any time during the week, but we especially expect it at flag ceremonies and campfires. During the day, your troop may wear their scout T shirts, or one of the Camp Levi Levi T shirts that are available for purchase from the Trading Post. NOTE: NO CAMOUFLAGE CLOTHING, BANDANAS, ETC. ARE ALLOWED DURING CAMP NOTE: TOUR PLANS ARE REQUIRED FROM OUT OF COUNCIL UNITS & MUST BE PRESENTED AT CHECK IN!! Camp Levi Levi Leader s Guide 2014 Page 6

8 FIRE The greatest danger at camp is fire. For that reason the following rules must be strictly enforced. 1. Smoking is not allowed within the camp area. It is permitted only in designated areas. 2. Use battery powered or propane equipment. Any liquid fuels must be used in the troop campsite and only under adult supervision. 3. If a fire is desired keep it as small as possible, and use only the established fire rings or fire lays. Fires must be DEAD out!!!! NEVER LEAVE A FIRE UNATTENDED. 4. At trail camps, after the fire is drenched with water and the ashes stirred with a shovel, scatter (don t dump) all ashes widely at least 200 feet from the fire lay. 5. Leave no litter or food in fire areas. 6. Use only downed wood. DO NOT cut or break wood from standing trees. 7. Fire tools must be present in each campsite and should never be removed during camp. This includes a sand and water bucket by each tent in camp. USE OF CHEMICAL FUELS AND STOVES The following policy on the use of chemical fuels is from the Boy Scouts of America National Office: Knowledgeable adult supervision must be provided when Scouts are involved in the handling of chemical fuels. No chemical fueled lantern or stove is to be used inside a tent. Empty liquid petroleum cylinders should be returned home or to base camp. They may explode when heated and therefore must never be put in fireplaces or with burnable trash. The use of liquid fuels for starting any type of fire is prohibited. Refill liquid gas stoves and lanterns a safe distance from any flames, including other stoves and campfires. Never fuel or ignite a stove or lantern in a tent. Do not leave a lighted stove or lantern unattended 8. FIREWORKS ARE NOT PERMITTED IN ANY AREA OF THE CAMP!!!!! ANYONE BRINGING THEM IS SUBJECT TO IMMEDIATE DISMISSAL FROM CAMP. 9. Camp Levi Levi is often placed under fire restrictions or extreme fire restrictions. You need to come to camp prepared for any possible scenario. Contact the Camp Director prior to camp for any restriction currently in effect or future proposed restrictions. Page 7 Camp Levi Levi Leader s Guide 2014

9 OTHER GENERAL INFORMATION Scouts should read the merit badge requirements books for any of the merit badges that they are interested in taking at camp. Many of these merit badges have requirements that cannot be done during camp. Scouts should complete these requirements and bring the paperwork to camp so the merit badge counselor can review the papers and sign off the merit badge. It is also a good idea to bring a notebook and a pencil to camp to complete any writing requirements. FIRST CLASS TRAIL Scouts working towards their First Class rank will find this First Class Trail is designed for them. Scouts can attend this class in the morning and earn merit badges in the afternoon. BUDDY SYSTEM One of the best precautions that you can take is to use the buddy system at all times. It is required when leaving your campsite and on hiking trails. It is not required in the program areas unless you leave that area. WILDLIFE Wildlife abounds at Camp Levi Levi, it is not uncommon to see elk, deer, raccoons, skunks, squirrels, various types of birds and reptiles in camp. Scouts should be on their guard as there are rattlesnakes in the area.. Scouts must be warned to never approach or feed the animals, even though they may appear to be tame. Never place yourself in a situation that may endanger you or others. LEAVE NO TRACE CAMPING The Outdoor Code of the Boy Scouts of America applies to outdoor behavior generally, but for treks into wilderness areas minimum impact or leave no trace camping methods must be used. The following leave no trace camping principles must be followed by all campers at Camp Levi Levi: 1. Camp only is designated campsites. 2. Carry out all un burnable trash. 3. Take photographs: don t pick and collect. 4. Treat wildlife with respect. No trapping, harassing or endangering of wildlife. 5. Leave no litter on trails or in campsites. Pick up litter when found. 6. Leave no graffiti. 7. Leave campsites better than you found them. Camp Levi Levi Leader s Guide 2014 Page 8

10 8. Don t disturb signs. 9. Don t disturb artifacts. 10. Don t ditch around tents. 11. Don t leave behind any campsite projects such as drying racks, lashed tables, etc. 12. Leave no ropes tied on trees. 13. Use only downed wood. Do not cut or break wood from standing trees 14. Smokers should field strip all cigarette butts and smoke only in the designated area. Smoking will be done away from youth. GENERATORS ARE NOT ALLOWED AT CAMP LEVI LEVI DURING THE SUMMER! CLEANING UP AFTER MEALS Wash dishes at a sump or similar waste water area. DO NOT WASH DISHES NEAR THE WATER SOURCE. In the absence of a sump, collect a pile of rocks away from camp. Use a sump bag (two meal bags or plastic bags of any kind filled with pine needles, grass, etc and holes punched in the bottom) and strain food particles through it with running water over the rocks. Pack out the bag and scatter the rocks after camp is over. If you have a fire, the pine needles, grass, etc can be burned. Food particles that don t burn must be packed out. Use biodegradable soap when cleaning up at camp. COOKING Camp Levi Levi is a wilderness camp with all of the experiences of being in the great out-of-doors. This includes the experience of cooking. Just a reminder, your unit must bring all food to prepare. It is very important that your troop come prepared with the following equipment. Stove large enough to accommodate your meal (remember liquid fuel is to be used by leaders only). Cooking utensils, ie. pots, pans, etc. Paper plates, cups, trash bags and any item that will help in keeping camp clean. Each scout should have their own personal silverware or use plastic ware. Two-deep basins are great for washing dishes. Make sure food that needs refrigeration is brought to the Trading Post and should be clearly marked with your unit number and placed in the walk in refrigerator. Make sure that all food is in containers that close and cannot be pried open by the wildlife. Each campsite has its own water supply that is safe to drink and has been tested. SCOUTMASTER CHECKLIST Pay all fees for camp prior to March 27, (All fees must be paid before campsite can be secured.) Include a by name roster of all adults and scouts during internet registration and for check-in at camp. Complete Health Form for ALL attending camp. Boy Scouts of America tour plan-especially required for non-council units. Necessary adult leadership and back-up leaders identified. Review the troop s camp plan with parents. Review knife and axe skills with scouts and issue TOTIN CHIP cards prior to camp. Review merit badge requirements, merit badge schedule and camp schedule with scouts. NOTE: Two adult leaders with at least one being over 21 years of age must be in camp with your scouts at all times during camp. All adults must have Youth Protection training. This is available on line through the Council website or at Keep the rotation of leaders to a minimum. It is recommended that one of the adult leaders be in camp the entire week. There is a need for merit badge counselors that are willing and capable of assisting at camp. If you are interested in helping at camp, contact the Program Director or the Camp Director.
