1 Proudly Presents Our Annual Wapaha 2015 Spring Camporee Patrol Guide Sustaining Scouting March 13 15, 2015 at Tom Mays State Campsite
2 Welcome to the 2015 Spring Camporee. This will focus on Leave No Trace and Physical Fitness. Some details may be different from what we have seen in past years. Please review this participant s guide carefully. What is a Camporee? A camporee is many things camping fun for youth, the thumping of hundreds of feet on the way to an evening campfire, and the blue smoke from fires cooking stew or ham and eggs. It s the patter of rain on many tents at night. It s the ripple of wind-blown flags in the morning sun. It s catching the idea of teamwork in a patrol. It s learning to carry out an order to help the team succeed. A camporee can be a perfect showplace for the Scouting program and, therefore, go far beyond just being a gathering of boys. A camporee starts with the recognition that a patrol is the basic camping unit. The patrol demonstrates its very best camping techniques and shares its experiences with other patrols. When is the Spring Camporee? The event will be held Friday to Sunday, March 13 15, Pre-registration will be open thru March 10, The Camp will be open for camping beginning Friday night thru Sunday afternoon. Where is the Spring Camporee? Base camp is at Tom Mays Campsite, and the events are on Franklin Mountains State Park around Tom Mays. Who is in the Spring Camporee? All Boy Scout Troops, Venture Crews, Varsity and Explorers are welcome. All participants must be registered with Boy Scouts for the 2015 program year. Most events will require that eight Scouts from the Patrol participate so the ideal team size will be eight youth (however, fewer or more Scouts in a patrol will work). The Scouts will be expected to set out across the Tom Mays on their own without a Scoutmaster or other adult escort. What is the Cost of Spring Camporee? The cost is $10.00 if registered before March 10 th and $15.00 up until the day of the event. You must also dedicate one day of exhausting labor trekking around the mountain and showing your skills per Scout. 2K Fun Run on Saturday There will be a 2K Fun Run on Saturday morning at 7:30 AM. This is NOT a competition but rather an opportunity to get warmed up for the day and meet up with fellow Scouts! Camping: Units are encouraged to camp overnight either Friday or Saturday. Units may stay both nights if they so desire. Unit leaders should consider this option for safety reasons if they need to drive a long distance. Units will need to provide all tents, meals, equipment, and all other needs for overnight camping. Clothing: One of the most important parts of a Spring Camporee is to keep warm and dry. Each Scout must know what to wear. Late Winter early Spring weather is very changeable, requiring preparedness for almost any condition. A nice sunny day can turn into a raging blizzard or a blowing sandstorm very quickly. Your best protection is your common sense. Be prepared to dress in layers. Avoid working up a sweat, and keep yourself comfortable by removing or adding layers of clothing. Wear socks of wool or other material that wicks away perspiration. Wool stocking cap or similar head gear with ear coverings is necessary both during the day and at night in the sleeping bag to retain warmth. Scarves are recommended to protect the face from the cold and biting wind.
3 SCHEDULE OF EVENTS: Check In and Camp Site assignments (if available) Friday 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM (Vic Campsite 39) Check in and late Registration 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM Saturday Morning (Vic Campsite 39) 2K Fun Run Saturday 7:30 AM Events competition will run Saturday from 9:30 AM 3:30 PM Dutch Oven Competition 4:00 PM 6:00 PM (Fire pit between Campsite 27 and 38) Camp Fire Saturday 7:00 PM 8:30 PM (Fire pit between Campsite 37 and 38; bring a chair) Scouts Own Service at Camp Site 39 (Bring a chair), LDS Location to be announced 9:00am to 9:30am Check Out Sunday starting at 9:00 AM Please be flexible actual times may vary. The Camps and Events: Once checked in with the Campmaster, the Patrol/Team Leader should find the Trail Guide of that camp to get further instructions. The actual tasks to be completed at each camp will not be known to the Patrol ahead of time; however, the skills required for each event are taken from the Scout through First Class Scout requirements within the Boy Scout Handbook or are very general in nature. All the camps will require the Patrol to work together to complete a given task. Most events at the camps will require that eight Scouts from the Patrol participate. For Patrols having more than eight Scouts, the patrol leadership should see that participation is divided between the Scouts. For Patrols with fewer than eight Scouts, the general requirement will be that all Scouts must try an event once before any Scouts tries twice and that all Scouts try twice before any Scout makes a third attempt and son on. Scoutcraft Events will be based on the following skills: Physical Fitness (ALL) Wilderness First Aid (Remember there is no 911 and no hospitals nearby) Pioneering (Lashing? Constructing? Crossing water obstacles?) Orienteering (Where oh where are we?) Fire Starting (Matches? We don t need no stinking matches!) Knot Tying (Knot AGAIN?) Lifesaving (Yep somebody went sand swimming before waiting 30 minutes!) The Noon Meal There will be no horn to sound lunch. Patrols are encouraged to eat their meal on the trail and should plan accordingly. Patrols can go back to their individual camps for lunch; however, this may affect their time on the course. Please clear off any roads in case the need for an emergency vehicle arises. Each Patrol member is required to use full Leave No Trace principles. *Note: there will be water jugs and hot water for coco at each of the camps and lodge. Patrols will need to carry back trash to the dumpsters at CDR Base Camp.
