1 Triangular Forest Lake Lodge #344 October 2015 Forest Lake Masonic Lodge # SE 8 th Avenue Forest Lake MN forestlakemasons@gmail.com Master Mike Schultz mikeschultz01@gmail.com Senior Warden Mike Hill wolfinn@midco.net Junior Warden Mike Perreault mikep@excelperformanceonline.com Treasurer Bob Shoberg reshoberg@midco.net Secretary Ralph Magnusson ralphmag@frontiernet.net Brethren, The Masters Column I hope everyone that was at the Lodge for our last meeting enjoyed the meal that Mike Perreault prepared for us. The pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw on top and served with three choices of toppings to put on the sandwich, plus corn and we can t forget the root beer floats. See the picture on the back page. The tree in the back parking lot has been taken down and paid for. We a had tree that was coming very close to falling on the neighbor s garage. So, before it did we decided to take care of it. There has also been a discussion about new fund raisers. A steak fry was mentioned, a booyah feed was also mentioned along with a spaghetti dinner. We could also have a dinner at one of the local restaurants and have a special guest speaker. Don t forget. The next pancake breakfast is the last Sunday in September, September 27 th. I feel like PBS wanting your pledge, but like we always say, please take a few hours out of your day to help out. The money we raise at these breakfasts are
2 what keeps the Lodge going. It is also a good way to meet up with some of your old Lodge buddy s. We are still in the planning stages of having an appreciation dinner for the Forest Lake Policemen and Firemen on Thursday October 22 nd at 6:30 pm. We have a couple of speakers lined up and we are planning for a wonderful evening. We will let everyone know when everything is finalized and we will be sending out invitations at that time. That s all for now. Stay healthy and stay in touch WM Mike Schultz Senior Wardens Article Brethren Fall is upon us and with it a pick-up in Blue Lodge and Grand Lodge activities. And so it is that as the days get shorter and nights get longer, we are required to generate our own light through actions, words, and deeds. October will seem to pass by at the speed of light. Oct. 10 th at 10:00 AM is a KidsID program at the Forest Lake Fire Department. Then on Oct. 22 nd we ll host an appreciation dinner for the Forest Lake Police and Fire Departments, with special guest speaker PGM Tom McCarthy Grand Lodge activities will include a Leadership Conference in MPLS on October 3 rd, starting at 9:00 AM, then a Grand LEO Conference in Bltm. on Oct. 10 th at 6:30 PM followed by a Lecture School of Instruction in Rush City on Oct. 23 rd at 6:30 PM and Fellow Craft School in Newport on Oct. 29 th at 6:30 PM. With this in mind, now is a good time for each of us to ask ourselves why we joined the fraternity in the first place. If we are content with the direction of the lodge, ask ourselves why we are or are not attending meetings and activities, and what we can do to increase our own knowledge and personal growth as a person and leader. Leadership is defined as the action of leading a group of people or an organization. But what does that mean? As officers and nonofficers of the lodge we should check out the Free leadership conference on October 3 rd and on what will likely be a rainy day anyway. Call me to confirm your attendance and so we can plan to car pool there. Lastly, it has been awhile since we ve discussed lodge officers duties. So, during the next few months I will touch upon officer descriptions starting this month with the Tyler. The Tyler is often the first member that a visitor meets and receives an impression about how the lodge works. He is there to be welcoming and yet be a guard to confirm that lodge members and visitors alike (including Grand Lodge Officers) are active Masons with current dues cards, know the signs & tokens, etc. If this can t be done, the Tyler is to follow up with the Master or Sr. Warden. The Tyler arrives before meetings to see that the lodge room is set-up, that all brethren are properly clothed for stated or special meetings and funerals, to announce late arriving brethren or guests, to remain outside the lodge room door until called in by the Master, and to see that lodge paraphernalia is put away after the meeting has closed. The job, while not glamourous, is essential to a well-functioning lodge. Next month, we ll discuss the duties of Stewards. Fraternally, Mike Hill, Sr. Warden (651) Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other. John F. Kennedy
3 Junior Wardens Article From the South A big thank you to Brother Eric and John who volunteered to help with the meal for our September stated meeting. Our stewards were tied up, but John and Eric jumped to the call of duty. I have a policy that they did not know about is that those that help feed the brotherhood and guests get first dibs on left overs. There is always left overs. So if you feel inclined to help there is a little benefit in it for you. Next month we have a lot of opportunities to help. Stated meeting on 10/1/15, then an appreciation dinner for the Police and Fire men of our community. We will be serving pasta dishes for both events. So you can learn on one and be seasoned for the second. At our next stated meeting we will have the Kids from the MOST which helped us with the pancake breakfast in April. If you recall they were great kids and very helpful. We will be honoring them with a meal as well as he adults that worked that day also. They will be the guests of the lodge so remember to be generous when chipping in for the meal that day. We will also be doing a photo presenting them with the big check. There were many brothers that commented that day of the benefit in April how great they were and hoping they come back. We need to reward great positive efforts of our youth. Please come and show them how much we care and support them. Our family Fun Day in September with the benefit for Coats for Kids will provide another great opportunity for community and support and exposure. It promises to be a big event. Brothers it is important for us to be active, visible and relevant in the community. People need to see all the wonderful opportunities that Masons can provide to generate interest in our fraternity which will allow us to attract good men and their families. May brotherly love and support prevail! From the South Your devoted brother and Junior Warden Michael Perreault Did You Know? ~ The oldest known Masonic writing, the Regius Manuscript or "Poem of Moral Duties," was discovered to be a Masonic document by a non-mason, J. O. Halliwell, in It was written about 1390 and was given the name "Regius" because it was found in the Royal Library of England. It is now a part of the British Museum. Some common Masonic Ritual terms in use today are found in it such as "So Mote It Be." ~ In 1920, Gate City Lodge #522 in Kansas City MO met every day of the week except Sunday to confer a record 1,107 degrees, averaging 21 degrees a week. ~ By Ancient custom, the King was always covered while his subjects were never covered in his presence. The American custom of the Master of the Lodge wearing a hat as a symbol of his authority is apparently a result of that ancient custom. ~ When Brothers Richard E. Byrd and Bernt Balchen first flew over the North and South Poles, they dropped a Masonic flag on each Pole. Then, in the expedition, Brother Balchen tossed his Shrine Fez on the North Pole. ~ A Brother was initiated on August 23, 1879 by Lodge #239 in a balloon flying over Paris. ~ In 1892 the world's tallest building was the Masonic Temple at Randolph and State Streets in Chicago. ~ In 1952, eighty-nine percent of the U.S. Supreme Court Justices were Freemasons. ~ Every United States President from Tennessee (Andrew Jackson, Andrew Johnson, and James K. Polk) was a mason. All were born in North Carolina. ~ Winnedumah Lodge #287 of Bishop, CA holds its meetings at 270 feet below sea level, the lowest lodge in North America.
