1 HOT AIR 27 September 2018 Education and Literacy Month Kym s Catch Up Thank you to everyone who supported the High Tea for Hamlin last weekend, by attending, bringing a plate to share or generously donating. Together we raised $1500 towards a very worthy cause and enjoyed a lovely afternoon of fellowship, hosted by Margot and Duncan. We have another night of fellowship for Riverfire this Saturday, at the Maritime Museum. Close to 100 members and their friends and families will be attending a great turnout to watch the fireworks over the city. It is wonderful we can enjoy each others company and support each others passions. The friendship of our members continues to keep our club vibrant and our meetings energetic! Sadly, we say goodbye this week to two of our crew, both of whom will be greatly missed. Catherine is relocating to Melbourne, and Jacqui has relocated to PNG. There is little doubt we will continue to be in contact with both of them, and welcome them back whenever they are in Brisbane. President Kym PS Just a reminder Walk for Awareness is on 7 October. 2 LAST WEEK S MEETING Last week Lindsay tuned 60 and it was Catherine s last meeting before getting married and moving to Melbourne. Our guest speaker was Jennifer Eathorne s nephew, Wade Eathorne, who educated us through sharing his experience of his fascinating heart transplant journey. Note that Wade is sitting down in the photo as when both are standing Jennifer comes to just above his elbow. HIGH TEA FOR HAMLIN It was a wonderful afternoon at Margo and Duncan s Kangaroo Point apartment on Saturday, with superb food, great bubbles and plentiful raffle prizes. Our Club has now raised $1,495 for the Catherine Hamlin Fistula Foundation. A great event for a great cause.
3 TIINA S REPORT In the tradition of a picture tells a thousand words, Tiina s report this week are a series of photos from Fraser Island. I don t think you need text to know that she had a good time.
4 THE DIFFERENCE WE ARE MAKING Bringing Joy The Beckers are finally home Week end 21 Sept Magazines 79 Magazine Worth $ YTD : $ Project Update Dear Deb My feedback to you is just what a positive impact the magazines are having on the ladies. They really enjoy the treat each week. Sometimes Kate will deliver, other times myself or one of our volunteers Sister Elizabeth who also helps out with our mobile library. It is especially valuable for those who are more socially isolated and gives us an opportunity and an excuse to start a conversation with them. I have kept aside one of the children s mags from a few weeks back as one of the ladies would like to give it to her grandchild as part of the Christmas gift we will help her organise (she is rarely able to leave her room so something like this has special meaning for her). If you would ever like to meet some of the ladies for whom you are making a difference; please let me know and I d be happy to show you around. Or you d be more than welcome to attend one of our morning teas which we host each month. Likewise I am also very keen to attend one of your club meetings. There just never seems to be enough days in the week but I hope to get there after the school holidays. The Beckers are finally home after Nadia s accident. They travelled well despite the risk of Nadia s leg swelling. They were lucky that they had a spare seat near them so Nadia could keep her leg elevated, most of the way. While this was uncomfortable at times, it was crucial in keeping Nadia s healing process on track. The flight attendants were very helpful and fully supported the Beckers in using the spare seat to ensure Nadia s leg stayed elevated. They send their regards and hope everyone is well. Once home they immediately started rehabilitation. They had their first visit to the traumatologist who is the leader of the whole rehabilitation team. The first week was spent doing Xrays, lab exams, several different image exams, and...and.. and from tomorrow on, they start with the doctors visits like infectologist, kidneys, neurologist, plastic surgion, and... and. Despite these busy times, they are happy to be at home again and every day give thanks to all people who did so much for them during the last 100 days. Germano continues to liaise with Margo and Duncan and he advises that he would like to showcase our Hot Air magazine that features their visist to our Club, prior to their trip home, in their Club s 60 years of foundation documentation. Germano once again thanks us all for our welcome and kind assistance during a very stressful time in their family life. He wishes us a pleasant week and cherishes the Rotary friendships that he and his family made at our Club. Best regards, Germano Becker and Family Thanks again Deb to you and the Rotary Club of Brisbane High-Rise for making a difference to our residents. 5 Earlyacters and Rotaract Clubs are Cleaning Up Dear President Kym and all at Rotary Club of Brisbane High Rise, Warm greetings from a sunny Arusha. The Earlyact, Interact and Rotaract clubs of St Jude s have been at it again, with exciting, educative and environmental activities. This time the Earlyactors, Interactors and Rotaract club have been focusing on Environmental Awareness Campaigns and they had activities that led to World Clean Up day which was coordinated by Let s do it Tanzania. Every Friday at St Jude s our primary school has its weekly assembly. The Earlyactors alongside Laura (our Rotary specialist) created a song about recycling. The song was loved by their fellow students. On 31 st August, the Rotaract club of St Jude s hosted a pool table tournament. The money that was raised through the tournament went towards World Clean-up day. The winning team came from St Jude s. The winners were Onesmo (one of our team members from Supporter Relations) and Mr Bundala (a teacher from the secondary campus). The money collected was used by Let s do it Tanzania, to purchase gloves, rubbish bags and it also helped to subsidize the rubbish truck in Arusha. 15 th September was World Clean Up Day and the Rotaract club joined the rest of the world on a sunny Saturday. The work started along the road that leads to St Jude s and finished at Moshono Stand (the hub of Moshono, the dala dala stand). With their brightly coloured orange gloves, the Interact and Rotaract members picked rubbish alongside the road, in the gutters and on vacant land. It was an activity that showed the Moshono residents that the Rotaracters were serious about the environment. After collecting the rubbish they joined other groups that were doing the cleaning in another part of Arusha to dump the rubbish. It was a great day overall. As you can see the Interact and Rotaract clubs of St Jude s have been very busy in improving their local community. Future Guest Speaker Fundraising
6 DG WENDY IS STILL ALIVE! Wendy sent through her September calendar to give us an idea of what she is up to and prove that she is still alive. She seems to be a bit busy. However, she was also sounding me out to establish if I had heard about the midnight frolic on the shores of Bougainville or sitting tied to a small boat off an island in the Solomons? Has anyone else heard these stories!!! She claims that she is gathering a book load of memories about things that are happening around the visits. Laughing all the way. Good to know that she is definitely still a High Riser! Can hardly wait to hear all the stories and hopefully see the pictures!
