1 W W W ORCA SPOUTS Orca Lodge #194 Redwood Empire Council Boy Scouts of America Volume 11 Winter 2004 Issue 1 FELLOWSHIP!! at Elk River Orca Lodge will once again be heading to Elk River Scout Camp, outside of Eureka, for the annual Lodge Fellowship on the weekend of March This fun filled outing is open to all lodge members who wish to attend...and a few who only think they don t want to attend. This weekend is meant to be a couple days of relaxation and fun, with no work required! Plan to spend the weekend playing games, trading patches, watching movies, and enjoying some great food! Bring your video game console and your favorite games and movies, but please remember to label all of your stuff so it doesn t get mixed up with other people s equipment. A lodge meeting will also be held on Saturday at 1:00 pm. There will also be an opportunity to attend a Lodge Leadership Development course. Some of you may wish to work on Ceremonies and Indian Dancing skills. For those ready to receive the Brotherhood honor, review sessions and a ceremony will be available. All of you patch collectors/traders out there (and some of you who haven t had a chance to purchase one yet), you will be able to buy more 10th anniversary flaps at the fellowship, but you will have to be there in person to buy. This fun filled weekend of fellowship is only $12.00 to cover the cost of food and the camp. 2 Fall Ordeals: Takin Care of Business Left to Right, John Tolbert, Patrick O'Neill, Robert Rivera, and John Mattern. On the weekends of October and November 7-9, Orca lodge completed its Fall ordeal season. The ordeals were smaller than usual, especially in the south, where there were 6 ordeal candidates and 3 members going through the Brotherhood ceremony. A good time was had by all, with much work being accomplished around both Elk River and Masonite Navarro. Projects included preparing the camps for winter, and performing minor maintenance on the buildings. For several years, the lodge has b e e n attempting to implement the Elangomat program, in an effort to boost member retention. The program works by having a member of the lodge go through the ordeal again, as an Elangomat, or Friend in Lenni Lenapi. The Elangomat keeps in touch with the new ordeal member after the weekend is completed. He makes sure that the new member is appraised of all chapter and Lodge events. At the first opportunity for the new member to achieve Brotherhood, he makes sure the candidate is ready and will be able to get to the ceremony. 2 Candidates at Navarro lining up for the project... 3 10th Anniversary Lodge Dinner Held at Luther Burbank Center Cabrosha Chapter Hosts The 2003 Lodge Dinner took place at the Luthur Burbank Arts and Garden Center, in Santa Rosa. There was a hundred and eight people in attendance. Seventy four members and thirty four non-members. The catered food was not only plentiful, but of excellent quality. During the course of the evening Logo jackets, polo shirts, sweat shirts and more were awarded to lucky ticket holders. There was even a fund raising auction. As this was the 10th Anniversary of the founding of Orca Lodge, a special lodge flap was issued and members could purchase up to three for $5.00 each. A special effort was made to get all the Lodge Chiefs from the past in attendence. Lane Kasselman/1994, Tom Rathbun/1997, Jason Yarnall/1999, and Michael Buxton/2001 & 2002 were able to attend and showed the Spirit of the Arrow and Leadership to the Lodge still live on, even many years later. Traveling from Reno to join in on the festivities were Ross Armstrong, Section W3B Chief as well as Steve Davidek and Everett Holm, W3B Adviser and Associate Adviser. Silver Fluke Recipiants, Glen Goddard, Mike Randolph, Bill Bell and Curtis Aultman. The recipients of the Lodge s coveted Silver Fluke Award were Glen Goddard, Mike Randolph, Curtis Aultman and Bill Bell. LtoR, Joey Fini, John Mattern, Chris McCormick and Bryan Enloe are sworn in by Ross Armstrong, Section W3B Chief After dinner lodge elections took place. Among the elected were Joey Fini as Chief (former treasurer), John Mattern as Vice Chief (former secretary), newcomers Chris McCormick as Secretary, and Bryan Enloe as treasurer. Many awards were given out and among them was the Founders Award, the Silver Fluke and the James E. West award. The recipients of the Founders Award were Daniel Washburn, and Michael Buxton (who flew in from Colorado just for the dinner) James E. West Fellowship recipiants Bill Hughes and Bill Eckert. The Lodge presented two James E. West Awards this year to Bill Hughes and Bill Eckert. Rounding out the festivities, Joey Fini and Tim Doughty were selected to recieve the Vigil Honor. They both attended the Vigil Weekend in December, where they formally were awarded the honor. It was a great dinner...if you didn t make it, you missed a good one! 4 LOOKING FOR SOME HIGH ADVENTURE THIS YEAR? The Order of the Arrow has a lot to offer. Two weeks at some of the greatest places on earth. If you would like some personal information, look no further than our own John Mattern, Orca Lodge Vice Chief ( or vicechief@orca194.org), who went to Northern Tier last summer. It was and is truley the experience of a lifetime! PHILBREAK 2004 JUST AROUND THE CORNER by Ken Davis, National OA Committee The exciting Philbreak program for older OA members, older Venturers, and younger adult Scouters, is once again available for Participants provide a week's service at Philmont Scout Ranch during the spring break season. The program will consist of trail building and/or fire restoration work on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday of each week with a day of skiing on Thursday in Angel Fire, NM. The program concludes on Friday and participants leave on Saturday morning. Other events will include ranch tours and visits to the Philmont Trading Post, Seton Museum and Villa Philmonte, home of Wait Phillips. There are still a number of slots open in each of the three weeks for Philbreak 2004, which kicks off March 7. The cost is $100 per person, plus your own transportation to Philmont. (If you fly, transportation will be provided from the Albuquerque airport; otherwise, service from the Raton, NM bus or train station is also available.) Those eligible to attend must be registered with the Boy Scouts of America and at least 18 years old, but not yet 26 when they arrive at Philmont. The program sesions begin on March 7, 14, and 21. The application form can be found on the National OA Web Site at < and requires a local Scout council approval signature. Don't miss out on this great opportunity to see Philmont in the early spring and do some great service for the ranch 4 Wilderness Voyage is a fourteen-day experience inspired by the traditions of the French and Canadian Voyageurs who ventured the northern wilderness during the 's. Traveling thousands of miles by water and portage, these Voyageurs were hired to haul goods and furs to trade with Native Americans and Europeans. In the spirit of these adventurers, Arrowmen will embark on a voyage that is twofold. One-half of the OA Northern Tier Wilderness Voyage focuses on portage trail and campsite maintenance within the Boundary Waters. The remaining expedition is spent on a canoeing adventure that is planned and chosen by the participants in the program. In other words, each crew plans their own voyage! However, the program is not simply portage trail work, camping, and canoeing. The OA Northern Tier Wilderness Voyage is ultimately a journey that challenges Scouts mentally, physically, and spiritually. Trail Crew is a fourteen day experience. The first week focuses on trail construction and maintenance under the guidance of Philmont trail crew foremen. The second week is a seven day backpacking trek that is designed by the participants. The program is not simply building trail and hiking though, the OA Trail Crew is ultimately a journey that challenges Scouts mentally, physically, and spiritually. Trail building is tough. The worksite experience is full of long, strenuous days requiring a great deal of physical effort. Participants are expected to work with great diligence as the trail that is being built is designed to last over 75 years and protect the beautiful landscape of Philmont Scout Ranch. Other than trail building techniques, Scouts will strengthen their leadership skills, learn advanced wilderness and lowimpact camping skills, observe and participate in group wilderness safety, good judgment, and motivation activities, and receive special OA instruction.

Any preorders received after this date will not be processed, so don t wait until the last minute order now! They will be made available at the spring ordeals, if you cannot make it to one of them, please include $3.00 for shipping. 6 NOAC 2004: 6 Days of OA Fellowship The National Order of the Arrow Conference-NOAC-will be held from July 31 to August 5. The conference is a biannual gathering of arrowmen from across the United States. NOAC is an event that includes training, fellowship, and activities for arrowmen. The conference will be held in Ames, Iowa, on the Iowa State University Campus. As an additional perk, some dorm rooms at Iowa State University now have air conditioning (so you might only have to take two showers a day). Orca Lodge will be sending a contingent to NOAC next year. If you are interested in attending the conference, you must have your paperwork submitted no later than Friday, February 20, In addition, you must also enclose a check for $250 (see application form). Of this first payment, $100 will be sent to the National Order of the Arrow Director as a deposit. This deposit is nonrefundable. The cost for attending the conference is about $325 for both youth and adult arrowmen. The lodge has estimated that the total cost will be approximately $750 for each contingent member. This includes the previously mentioned conference fee (covers housing, meals, program fees), as well as round-trip airfare and transportation from the airport to the conference. A second payment of $250 is due by April 16, and the final payment of $250 is due by June 1. If the total costs of the trip are less than this estimated amount, the balance will be refunded; if it costs more, those who have registered will be notified. A preliminary sign-up sheet will be passed around at the Lodge Dinner in November. 7 Notes From the Lodge Adviser... As we complete another year I would like to take time to thank all the outgoing Lodge officers, Chief Aaron Landwehr, Vice-chief Dax Kirkpatrick, Secretary John Mattern, and Treasure Joey Fini, for making this year such a success. I would also like to thank both Chapter Chiefs Philip Myers and Patrick O Neill and their Advisers Ken Moffitt and Jason Yarnall for a job well done. This has been a busy year for Orca Lodge. To begin in March I attended the NLATS where I gained many new ideas to help our lodge grow. I look forward using these ideas in the coming year. In June we had two very successful Ordeals, which brought us 55 new Ordeal members, 11 new Brotherhood members with a total participation of 140. That s about 1120 man-hours of service to our Council Camps. In August we held our Lodge Fellowship and LLD Training at Camp Noyo. Despite the lack of the Skunk Train the 30 members that attended had a great time and we accomplished many of our goals. Everyone enjoyed the time to go canoeing, swimming, and fishing or for many of us just the opportunity to relax. We have achieved one of our goals which was to get our Where to go Camping Book online. It is now available for use at orca194.org and CD s with the WTGC Book on it will be distributed to unit leaders in very near future. In September we celebrated the 30th anniversary of Section W 3B at the annual Section Conclave, which was held at Frog Town USA. Orca had 46 members participate of which 16 were youth members. That is more than double our youth attendance from Our Lodge took medals in two of the competition events, Ultimate Frisbee and Broom Hockey. Way to Go Orca! Let s keep up the good work and take back the Bald Eagle Award in At the October and November Ordeals we welcomed 20 new Ordeal members and 5 new Brotherhood members. Total participation was 89, which produced at least an additional 712 man-hours of service to our council. In mid November we held a very successful Lodge Dinner where we celebrated the beginning of our 10th year as Orca Lodge. We had 108 Arrowmen and family members in attendance. Special thanks should go to Ray Leonard and Bruce Mayfield for all the hard work they put in to the planning and execution of the dinner. The Lodge presented two James E. West Fellowship Awards one to Bill Eckert and the other to Bill Hughes. Silver Flukes were presented to Bill Bell, Curtis Aultman, Glen Goddard and Mike Randolph. In addition we presented the Founders Award, to Michael Buxton and Daniel Washburn. 7 This is a great honor for both of them as it is the highest national award a lodge can give. Two of our brothers Joey Fini and Tim Doughty were called out to receive the Vigil Honor in December. Another final and one of our most important goals this year was that we achieved Quality Lodge. I appreciate all the people that put time and effort in to making this goal a reality. We have a busy year ahead of us and I challenge each and every one of you to get involved in the lodge and to help make a difference. This coming year is the National Order of the Arrow Conference, which will be held in Ames, Iowa and Iowa State University. I have included a registration form in the newsletter for this great event and I ask that if any of you have questions please give me a call. We have enough spots for 12 people, 8 of which are youth spots and the remaining are for adults or youth. This is the tenth year of our great lodge s existence and I plan on making it the best year yet! In order to accomplish this we currently need to focus on unit elections and camp promotion. Elections are what bring new members into the lodge, so it is very important that we are successful in completing each and every one of them. We also have the National Order of the Arrow Conference swiftly approaching and I hope many of you decide to attend with your fellow arrowmen. 9 ARROWMEN SERVING TO MAINTAIN CAMPING TRADITIONS Ever since its founding by Dr. E. Urner Goodman and Carroll A. Edson the Order of the Arrow and Summer Camp have been intertwined. Your role as an Arrowman includes promoting Scout Camping and maintaining camping traditions and spirit. What better way to do this than by serving on summer camp staff? The Staff at Camp Masonite Navarro is comprised of over 75% Arrowmen. Camp needs your help in promoting Scout camping with that special spirit in the outdoors that only arrowmen exhibit. Summer camp is our proving ground for Scouts to learn new camping skills and have fun in the great outdoors. One of your greatest achievements as an Arrowman can be as serving on a summer camp staff. The award is only available for three years, ending on December 31, If you completed the requirements the requests for the award must be submitted through your lodge by March 1st (there is an extension available for arrowment on active military duty to complete the requirements by December 31, see National OA Web site for details). The Order of the Arrow's vision for the future emphasizes a strategy of increased service to the Boy Scouts of America by Arrowmen. To reward those Arrowmen who go beyond their immediate responsibilities to help and guide others to new heights, the Order of the Arrow created the Arrowman Service Award. The award will focus on three areas of service: personal, chapter/lodge activities, and general service to the community. Contrary to popular belief, if you missed the first award session, you can still earn the first award. Three different awards are available. The first award is a red arrow with a gold compass emblazoned on it, suspended from a white ribbon. It is worn in place of the Universal Ribbon. The award can be earned up to 3 times in a threeyear period. Each time it is awarded, a different color compass is placed on the arrowhead. All first time recipients may purchase the original award. Arrowmen who earned the award more than once during the outlined three year period ( ) may purchase the silver attachment for having completed this award a second time (2002 or 2003 only) and the bronze attachment for having completed this award a third time (2003 only). The attachment will be worn on the award's white ribbon. Signatures of approval will be required for each requirement. If you think you have qualified for the Arrowmens Service Award this last year, it is not to late, to get yours. Talk to your lodge officer(s) or adviser(s) today! March 1st is almost here.
