Kris Rebillot from the Buck Institute was terrific. It is amazing that bleeding edge aging research is being conducted just 14 miles from Petaluma. Our kids and grandkids are going to live to be Last month, the Board approved a process for dealing with members who neglect to call in when they are not going to attend a meeting. Members on the list of violators were sent a letter explaining the problem, and I am pleased to say that several of those members did in fact pony up for those unreported missed meetings. In the continuing drive to convert as many members as possible to using or the website to obtain newsletters and other Branch 147 info, a letter was sent out to those members who have not provided the Branch with an address. A few replied, and I m pleased to report that the list is shorter. There are no fixed plans to change the current mail policy, but, ultimately, change will be inevitable. We are one of the few (out of 120) SIR branches that either deliver newsletters only by and/or website or charge for a mailed copy, typically $25/year. Remember that, if you don t have a computer, you can access the website on your Smartphone or tablet or use one of the free computers available at any public library. 2 Computer & Smartphone Group from the Magic Keyboard by SIR Mike Burwen This group meets on the last Thursday of every month from 2:00 to the Petaluma Senior Center JULY 26 TH, THURSDAY MEETING (2:00 to 3:30): The subject will be Buying a Smartphone and a Smartphone Plan. We examined this topic 2+ years ago. In the interim, many things have changed. If you are thinking about getting a Smartphone, upgrading an existing phone or wanting to save money on your cell phone plan, this is a meeting that you should not miss. We will tell you how to cut your monthly bill in half without sacrificing service! AUGUST 30 TH, THURSDAY MEETING (2:00 to 3:30): The August meeting of the Computer & Smartphone Club will be held at the Senior Center, 2:00-3:30 PM on Thursday August 30th. We will revisit a subject that we have covered a couple of times in the past. That is, Computer & Smartphone Apps with an emphasis on those that have been recently introduced. Find out about the latest and greatest. All the apps reviewed will be free or very low cost. BIG SIR (Con't) Those members interested in playing poker should get in touch with Al as soon as possible. Al says that any member willing to lose $5000 in an evening is welcome. (Just kidding.) Jerry Mahoney and Bill Cooper are both making progress in their bouts with their respective illnesses. Jim Inden reports that Bill may be back for the September meeting. I have a few pluses and minuses to report. Mike Blume has resigned from the Branch and the Board because he will be staying much of the year with his family in Spokane. Jim Bauer has resigned from the Board but will continue his membership. Doug Robinson volunteered to replace Dave Shetka and will soon be handing out table assignments at the check-in table. Thanks Doug. Volunteers are the lifeblood of the Branch. Don t forget to sign up for the August 23 Annual Picnic by the August 16 deadline. For a measly $12, you get a great chicken BBQ meal with wine, beer and soft drinks included, topped off by a fun social experience. Feel free to bring the family. Children still on the bottle are free! Again, hats off to Tom Molinari who organizes this event year after year. You will find the signup form with this newsletter and on the website. The Membership unanimously approved the slate of Board and Executive Committee members approved by the Board for This slate will be installed at the December meeting. They are listed on Page 5. Bocce Ball: Bocce will meet at Leghorns Park on Thursday, August 16, at 10:00AM. After our meet players have the option to go to a local restaurant for lunch.
