Bill has been laid up for months with medical issues. He showed up at the August meeting having shed some 75+ pounds and claims to be almost ready to resume his bowling career. Bill has been Branch 147 Secretary for something like 20 years and he has been sorely missed. Little SIR Greg O Brien landed another superb speaker in City Councilman Chris Albertson. It was hard to get him off the podium. When he quit there were still a dozen hands raised for questions. While the speech itself was terrific, the news concerning Petaluma s streets, housing and other issues is less than optimistic. It s a shame that Chris is retiring from the Council. We need more like him. On a positive note, Chris says he plans to join SIR after he retires from the City Council! Reminder: All members are welcome to attend BEC meetings. BEC meetings start at 10:00 AM before the regular Tuesday meetings. A new Activity with the working title Daytrippers was proposed at both the BEC meeting and the Member meeting. The idea is to organize inexpensive day trips to various places within easy car commute distances. For example, visit the Rosy the Riveter Museum followed by a dim sum lunch in Richmond s Chinatown; a private guided tour of the Buck Institute; a winery tour with lunch included. The idea is to keep the cost down by carpooling, arrange venues that are attractive to significant others as well as members, and arrange trips that avoid rush hour traffic. The idea is to schedule a day trip every 2 or 3 months. When the Members were asked if they liked the idea, almost every hand in the room went up. (con t page 2) Robert Hemphill, founder of National Sports Memorabilia (now in the Petaluma Outlets) Robert has played a major role in the development of the national sports memorabilia industry for over 30 years, developing and creating merchandise for the industry. In addition he is a direct agent for about 25 retired athletes and has worked with over 300 different athletes handling between 5,000 and 60,000 autographs each year. As a special feature he will be bringing retired 49er and Hall of Famer Jimmy Johnson with him for the meeting. Plan on arriving early to view the photo albums on display and to enter the raffle for a Jimmy Johnson autographed football or photo. 2 Computer & Smartphone Group from the Magic Keyboard by SIR Mike Burwen This group meets on the last Thursday of every month from 2:00 to the Petaluma Senior Center AUGUST 30 TH, THURSDAY MEETING (2:00 to 3:30): (Held at the Senior Center) We will revisit a subject that we have covered a couple of times in the past. That is, Computer & Smartphone Apps with an emphasis on those that have been recently introduced. Find out about the latest and greatest. All the apps reviewed will be free or very low cost. SEPTEMBER 27 TH, THURSDAY MEETING (2:00 to 3:30): TV by Internet: more than cable-cutting. Getting TV from the Internet is a rapidly increasing trend. In the past year, virtually every channel has come up with an app for accessing its content over the Internet. All of the big TV providers like Comcast, DirecTV, DISH and AT&T are offering Internet alternatives to conventional cable or satellite transmission. The major traditional entertainment companies like Disney, 20 th Century Fox, Universal and the major networks like NBC, ABS and CBS have jumped in as well. Which of these many options will work best for you is the topic of the September 27 meeting. The meeting will be at the Senior Center, 2:00 3:00 PM. BIG SIR (Con't) I ve agreed to get the ball rolling, but we need a few people to take this activity over and run it on a continuing basis. If you are willing to do that, please let me know. If you have suggestions about places to go, them to sir147@sirinc2.org. I was sorry to hear that Bill Johns, who was scheduled to be Little SIR next year has withdrawn. The Nominating Committee under Tom Molinari will be seeking a replacement, and I hope to be able to report success in that endeavor next month. John Gallagher has resigned as Storekeeper due to health issues. A closely held secret, the Storekeeper is responsible for ordering logoed shirts, jackets, caps, etc. During the meeting, members were polled to find out who was interested in buying such items, and only a few hands were raised. Therefore, we are not going to replace John at this time. I ve asked the State to provide that service, but I m not holding my breath. Mark Quam has applications from 4 potential new members that will be brought up for approval at the September Board Meeting. I can t remember a month with that many new applications. Attaboy Mark.
