1 Rooster Talk Little Hills Branch 147 July 2018 Vol. 32, #7 Branch 147 Web Site: sirinc2.org/branch/147 From BIG SIR Mike Burwen The speaker for the June meeting was Air Force veteran, Rose Nowak, President of Redwood Empire Military Women Across the Nation. I think that we old-timers don t spend a lot of time thinking about women in the military, but they are increasingly important and deserve the same support as all our veterans. I was floored when I heard Rose say that there are 55,000 homeless female vets in the US. They suffer from PTSD and other maladies the same as guys. The Board approved a process for dealing with members who neglect to call in when they are not going to attend a meeting. Henceforth those members will receive a letter suggesting that they consider paying for the meal they missed at the subsequent meeting. Reminder: All members are welcome to attend BEC meetings. BEC meetings start at 10:00 AM before the regular Tuesday meetings. The new brochures are having a positive impact on our recruiting. A few people have called or ed in stating that they saw the brochure and want to learn more about SIR 147. We initiated two members last month and another two this month and it looks like there are a few more on the horizon. You might recall that I announced my goal for 2018 was a net gain of 5 members for the year. I am cautiously optimistic that goal will be reached. In the meantime, we ve run out of brochure display cases, and more are on order. If anyone needs one, let me know. I am pleased to report good news. Jerry Mahoney appears to be recovering from cancer treatments. His wife tells me he is doing pretty well but needs to put on some weight. (Con t on Page 2) Speaker of the Month for next Month Arranged by Little SIR Greg O'Brien Kris Rebillot, Director of Communications at the Buck Institute will be our speaker. Kris started her career as a news reporter in radio and TV. She started work at the Buck Institute in She developed the first media relations program and has been a witness to the Institute s growth. She enjoys working with the Buck scientists, helping translate their work for general public. Kris will talk about the Buck s focus on aging and the work they have been doing. Speaker of the Month for last Month Arranged by Little SIR Greg O'Brien Rose Kostiuk Nowak was our speaker. IN MEMORIAM Dave Shetka ( ) Page 1

2 Computer & Smartphone Group from the Magic Keyboard by SIR Mike Burwen This group meets on the last Thursday of every month from 2:00 to the Petaluma Senior Center JUNE 28 TH, THURSDAY MEETING (2:00 to 3:30): The June meeting of the Computer & Smartphone Club will be held Thursday, June 28, 2:00 3:30 PM at the Petaluma Senior Center. This meeting will cover three subjects: First, Al McLaughlin will discuss the Equifax data breach that made available personal financial data to criminals for more than half of the adults in the U.S. (and in the Senior Center). Second, Mike Burwen will discuss the latest options for thwarting unwanted robocalls. Third, the remainder of the meeting will be devoted to Q&A in response to the dozens of questions received from members following our request for topics. JULY 26 TH, THURSDAY MEETING (2:00 to 3:30): The subject of the meeting will be Buying a Smartphone and a Smartphone Plan. We last addressed this subject two and a half years ago. Since then, the cellphone industry has experienced major changes in technology, services, and prices. We will cover what is available today and take a peek at what will be coming soon. If you are thinking about getting a smartphone for the first time or upgrading the one you are currently using, don t miss this meeting. You will learn what you need to know to choose the phone and plan that best fits your needs. BIG SIR (Con't) (I d be happy to give him some no charge). Bill Cooper is going to get a pacemaker. Hopefully Bill will be able to return as our curmudgeon in residence. Assistant Secretary Jim Inden is praying for his return soonest. John Nelson had a stint put in. Says he feels better than he has in a long time. I shudder to think about where most of us would be without the benefits of modern medicine. Bocce Ball: Bocce will meet at Leghorns Park on Thursday July 14, at 10:00AM. After our meet players usually go to a local restaurant for lunch. That said, I m sad to tell you that Dave Shetka passed away. Dave was responsible for handing out lunch table assignments for as long as I can remember. At this writing, the family has not made a decision about a memorial service. If and when that happens, you will be notified. Rich Zanotti announced that interest in Bocce Ball appears to be picking up. Activity participation is one of the pillars upon which SIR is built. Our Area Governor, Sandy Grieves, is putting together a list of all the activities associated with each of the Area 8 branches, and I hope to be able to circulate that list in the near future. Most of those activities are open to participation by members from other branches. Don t forget to sign up for the Annual Picnic, August 23 beginning at 11:30 AM. For a measly $12, you get a great meal with wine, beer and soft drinks included, and enjoy a fun social experience. Hats off to Tom Molinari who organizes this event year after year. At the last meeting, Mark Quam read off the list of June birthdays. I was stunned to hear those birth dates - every one is younger than me. Talk about a downer.
