Cottage Landing Show Re-cap By Glenn Novak The week of September 10-16, 2017 was National Assisted Living Week and this year s theme was Family is Forever. Cottage Landing Senior Living in Carrollton invited members of our club to participate in their special celebration event held on Wednesday, September 13 th. To make for a bigger and better show, we expanded this invitation to our friends in the Golden City Cruisers, and we had a total of 14 collector vehicles show up from both clubs for an informal car and truck show from 3:00-5:00 pm. Residents, staff and family members walked around and enjoyed looking at the old and new cars and sharing some of their recollections of cars owned and days gone by. Cottage Landing hosted and publicized the activity and provided a special parking area for our display. They also engaged the services of a musician, Ken Taylor of The Klassics, who performed a wide variety of oldies and country favorites throughout the event. In addition, all in attendance were welcome to enjoy the free ice cream and snow cone treats provided by the Kona Ice truck. either the parking lot or the covered porch area. After the event, we brought our cars home and some of us met later at Applebee s for dinner and conversation. Thanks again to members of both car clubs who brought out their fine rides for all to enjoy. Some of the vehicles showcased for spectators to enjoy included a 1928 Model A Ford owned by Gary and Carol Moyses, the Horne s 1934 Pierce-Arrow sedan, a 1954 Chevrolet 3100 pick-up and 1970 Chevelle owned by Lynn and Nick Ware, a 1955 MG-TF owned by Cameron Covert, the Hearnburg s 1957 Ford Skyliner, Walt and Jenny Smith s 1957 Thunderbird, a 1992 Corvette owned by Johnny and Barbara Waters, two of the Novak s Buicks, Danny Nixon s 1963 Impala coupe and some later model Corvettes owned by members of the Golden City Cruisers. It was something like a small car show without the judging and the trophies. The rewards were in the eyes and smiles of this very special target audience, who seemed to enjoy our display from Enjoying the day with pals from the Golden City CRuisers 3

Some great exposure for our region at the event! Admiring Cameron's MGTF Gary Moyses and his 1928 Model A Ford Coupe Thumbs up for this guy! Nick and Lynn Ware with Walt Smith and Rick Horne. Featured is Walt's Ford T-Bird Bill Hearnburg is keeping and eye on things! 4

Model A s parked in line as participants in the 2017 Dick & Jane Tour boarded the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway West Georgia Members Head to Hiawassee For Some Model A Fun By Rick Horne The Hornes and the Smiths participated in this year's Fun With Dick and Jane Tour in Hiawassee, Georgia. It started with a Friday rendesvous at the fabulous Gibbs Gardens. Folks began arriving at Gibb s Gardens around 11:30. There is a beautiful stream flowing through the middle of the valley, with hundreds of springs intersecting the stream. The springs are surrounded by millions of naturalized ferns making it one of the largest ferneries in the nation. Native azaleas, dogwoods, and mountain laurels add to the view. Jim Gibbs designed 24 ponds, 32 bridge crossings and 19 waterfalls. There are hundreds of varieties of plants and are carved into pockets surrounded by acres of trees that provide spectacular color in the Fall. We enjoyed boxed lunches on homemade breads from the Gibbs Gardens Café outside under cool shade trees. We then toured the gardens either walking or riding the trams. Mr. Gibbs has certainly created a showcase, and I understand from our guide he is very hands on in the maintenance and upkeep of the gardens. Around 3:00 it was time to depart for Hiawassee. Those that drove their A s had a scenic tour over the mountains and all arrived safely at the Lodge. Our host hotel was the Lake Chatuga Lodge, aptly on beautiful Lake Chattuga in Hiawassee Ga. Folks relaxed on the veranda overlooking the Lake for a spell. Jim Cannon came by the hotel to say howdy. Jim is the Technical Editor for MAFCA. Jim has a summer home in the area. Dinner was on your own. There are many nice restaurants in the area. Thanks to Jim Cannon s guidance we found a great place that served Italian and American cuisine. After dinner there was a great deal of meeting new friends and reacquainting with long time ones. Saturday morning many of us had a good old fashioned Southern breakfast at Mary s in Young Harris, Georgia just west of Hiawassee. By 9 AM we were on the road to Blue Ridge, Georgia and a highly anticipated train ride on the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway. A straight shot drive of about an hour and we arrived in Blue Ridge. We had some time to explore there historic and quaint downtown. It was All Aboard by 11:00 AM. We rode in open sided vintage train cars. The motive power was supplied by a pair of GP 10 Diesels. The weather was perfect. Even the locals remarked at how perfect the temperature and humidity were. The train ride takes about an hour at about 15 miles an hour. Along the Toccoa river we rode a good part of the way. Beautiful woods and Mother Nature's finest

The Blue Ridge Railroad s power house engine The Blue Ridge Scenic Railway is an hour long train ride along the picturesque Toccoa River. Open cars as well as closed train cars are available. During Fall Leaf times must be even more breathtaking. CAMAFC members Katie Herrick, Rick Horne and Ed Herrick pose on Ocoee River bridge in Copperhill, TN on the route of Blue Ridge Scenic Railway along the route. I imagine that in the fall the color must be fantastic on this train ride. We arrived in McCaysville GA/Copperhill TN about noon. Yes McCaysville and Copperhill are essentially one in the same. In fact the state line between Georgia and Tennessee runs at an angle right through both towns. We had several hours for lunch and exploration. Some had lunch overlooking the Ocoee River. Others did some antiquing. Both villages were jumping with activity on that Saturday. Visitors and locals were all having fun. At 2 PM we boarded for our train for the ride back to Blue Ridge. All the passengers swapped sides in the train cars for a different view of the beautiful mountain terrain. Along the way the locals greeted our passing train with hands waving and thumbs up. After our return to Blue Ridge some of us took a side trip mentioned in the Tour Book to Crane Creek Vineyards in Young Harris, GA. What treat that was. This vineyard has been in operation for about 20 years and is well established. The have tables and chairs in the shade overlooking the vineyards. As well as red and white wines, they offer cheese and crackers of all sorts for your enjoyment. After some complimentary wine tasting we chose an excellent red and enjoyed the view until dinner. The closing banquet was held at Brothers Restaurant in Hiawassee. A tasty buffet was offered with a variety of entrees. Sunday morning saw another large contingent at Mary s for breakfast once again. Everyone said their goodbyes and headed home. So the question is, will there be a Sixth (not necessarily annual) Fun With Dick and Jane Tour and how many West Georgia AACA Model A owners are going to attend?

The Toccoa River s Cherokee Indian fish trap. Cherokee settlements were common along the Toccoa River. The natives used an ingenious method of catching fish. By piling rocks and boulders across the river in a distinctive V shape, the Cherokee were able to trap and catch fish as they swam into the V. The following Model A-ers attended the Tour this year. Wayne & Debbie Areheart: 1929 Tudor Terry & Neva Adkins: 1930 Fordor Jerry & Margaret Boutwell: 1929 Fordor Mark & Sandra Bowen: 1931 Fordor Richard & Susan Buff: 1930 Fordor Dick Carne & Pam Rader: 1929 Roadster Jason & Tina Carne Wayne & Rosie Colson: 1931 Victoria Marshal & Marilyn Corley: 1931 Roadster Gareth & Debra Eich: 1929 Tudor - Note: Gareth and Debra had to cancel due to Hurricane Irma. We hope they survived the storm without damage. David & Anna Garmon: 1931 Coupe Dick & Jane Haldeman: 1931 Tudor Ed & Katie Herrick: 1930 Deluxe Delivery Henry & Diane Hinds: 1931 Coupe Rick & Liz Horne: 1931 Pickup (West GA AACA) Chuck & Regina Johnson: 1930 Coupe Jim & Jackie Johnson: 1930 Tudor Taylor & Judy Merrill: 1929 Roadster George & Jane Merry: 1929 Tudor Tom & Betty Miller: 1930 Tudor Don & Sandra Mims: 1930 Coupe Brooke & Mandy Reeve: 1931 Pickup Steve & Brenda Rinaldo: 1930 Tudor Gordon & Jane Sherman: 1931 Roadster Pickup Bob & Cheryl Simpson: 1930 Tudor Walt & Jenny Smith: 1930 Roadster (West GA AACA) Bobby & Hilda Sullivan: 1931 Pickup Pat & Pam Tyler: 1930 Phaeton 8

A late afternoon of fun at the Crane Creek Winery in Young Harris, GA. The Hornes and their pals the Herricks almost missed the Farewell Dinner because of wine, fun with Hurricane Irma evacuees and a three legged rescue dog named Crutch! Ed and Katie Herrick s Sedan Delivery at Crane Creek Winery after a wonderful day of Model A touring Liz Horne s new 1931 Pickup Jesse who ran like a champ on his first Dick and Jane tour

Antique Auto Club of America West Georgia Region Minutes Minutes from September 7, 2017 President Glenn Novak called the meeting to order at 7:14 pm. There were 20 members present and no guests. One birthday this month: Debbie Novak The minutes of the August 3 rd meeting were approved by voice vote. Gary Moyses gave the Treasurer s Report and indicated that there was an apparent discrepancy between his number and the recent bank statement, and that he will investigate and resolve it. Old Business Glenn reported that there were 388 cars at the Callaway show this year, up from 297 last year, and that the hot air balloons were tethered. Charities for 2017 were discussed and Geoff presented the idea of our club making a donation to help victims of the hurricanes. He suggested The American Red Cross and Rescue for Dogs from Hurricanes. Liz proposed that we might also consider the Salvation Army. These are possibilities for the club to consider at our October meeting. The Cottage Landing car show is still on for September 13 th from 3-5 pm and they will have live music there. Members are invited to bring out their cars and those interested may want to have a meal together afterward. The Tri-Club picnic is still on at the Duncan s church for Nov. 4. LaGrange will provide salads and sides and Anniston will bring desserts. We will provide the main dish and plates, cups and napkins. The annual Christmas Party is set for Dec. 16 at the Hearnburg s church. New Business Nominations for club officers for 2018 will be at the October meeting. Upcoming shows are on our website, including Senoia on Sept. 30 which is pre-registration only at $30 and which will have Dennis Gage of My Classic Car on site filming cars and interviewing owners. We should try to support our friends by attending the LaGrange AACA show on Oct. 14 and the Golden City Cruisers show on Oct. 21 The Smiths, Hornes and Moyseses are organizing the national show for American Austin and Bantam on June 4 th of 2018 at Callaway Gardens. If they need any help with this project, perhaps our club could pitch in. Meeting was adjourned at 7:48 pm. Submitted by: Debbie Novak - Secretary
