Debbie and I were happy to attend a large indoor AACA Regional Meet inside the air-conditioned Kentucky Expo Center on July 18th. It certainly makes a positive difference spending five hours cool and comfortable looking at old cars and trucks and talking to their owners. No sun, no heat, no sweat, no bugs. We need more shows like this! We have two really great events coming up this month for our club members, so please try to attend one or both. Drive an old or collectible vehicle and enjoy our hobby together with friends. We will be at Fred and Mary Duncan s home for a picnic and pool party on August 1st. This event will run from 10 am until 2 pm, and we will be joined by members of the Georgia-Alabama Region of AACA. Fried chicken will be the main dish, and members attending are asked to bring a side dish to pass. Those who like to swim will want to bring swimwear and some sunscreen. Our region will have a brief business meeting there instead of at American Pie on August 6th. Details were sent out to members via and also appear on our website. Please let Fred and Mary know what side dish you will bring so we can plan a good meal. On August 22nd we will tour from Carroll County up to the north side of Atlanta to meet Ray Morgan of Vintage Motorcar Restorations and enjoy a guided tour of his shop and cars he is working on currently. We are grateful to Rick for arranging this event and will join up with the Golden City Cruisers for the day. Details will be announced soon. Take a look at the sidebar in this issue of The Greasy Rag, as well as the Coming Events section of our website, to see what else is coming up in these next weeks and months. Don t forget our very own Lowell Opry Cruise-In on Saturday, September 5th. Let s have a good turnout again this year. Details coming soon. Hope to see many of our gang at these upcoming events. Stay healthy and stay cool. Enjoy the Ride! Glenn 1

3 By Glenn Novak Kyana Region hosts 80 th AACA ANNIVERSARY SHOW The AACA Southeastern meet was hosted in Louisville by the Kyana Region on July 18th, and this year celebrated the 80 th anniversary of AACA. Their large and active membership also put on the 75 th gala back in 2010 and we had an opportunity to attend that as well, and then to make comparisons. Held indoors in the very large, air-conditioned Kentucky Expo Center, this car show was just a sheer pleasure to attend from start to finish. The temperature is comfortable, cars have space around them, classes are well-represented, and there are plenty of food vendors and clean restrooms. Parking is $8 per carload but of course admission to the show is free, and it is open to the public from 10 am until the cars are released around 3 pm. It seemed like the judging teams were taking their time with each car and were in pleasant moods, largely due to the air conditioning during this 95 degree heat wave. It was fun to talk to many owners and to learn about their fine cars. Debbie and I ran into Greg Marshall while looking at a 1936 Buick Roadmaster convertible sedan, and we also saw some old friends there who had recently moved north from North Carolina to Illinois. Many of the cars we saw looked familiar too. They had about 750 cars there in 2010 and this year only around 250 showed up, so that was the only disappointment. While the DPC and the HPOF classes were just bursting this year, other classes were very light, especially the Full Classics, represented by only three Packards, one Cadillac, one LaSalle, and one Buick. I think a lot of the heavy iron went out to the Keeneland Concours d Elegance in Lexington scheduled on the very same day. Both are great shows so it is a shame that they competed with each other this year. We shall see if the Kyana Region is up to hosting another such event in It s a wonderful show and I would highly recommend driving the 900 miles round trip and making it a long weekend getaway. 3

5 Shuffle Off To Buffalo By Rick Horne GEORGE N. PIERCE WAS HAPPY TO SEE HIS CARS ARE STILL ON THE ROAD Liz and I just returned from the 58th Annual Meet of the Pierce-Arrow Society in Buffalo, New York. The Annual Meet was last held in Buffalo in A Buffalo meet is always special as it's a pilgrimage to the city where the cars were built from 1901 to Pierce- Arrow was the last US luxury car maker in business outside Detroit. We had approximately 50 cars attend the Meet this year. The Annual Meet consists of three days of tours, the Show on Saturday, and a farewell banquet on Saturday night. All the Tours were great. A few of the highlights were going to Niagara Falls where we rode the world famous "Maid of the Mist" boat into the horse. This boat ride takes to directly into the mist of the Falls. The boat crew supplies complimentary rain slickers and you really need them. The second day we toured to historic town of East Aurora. This is the home of the Roycroft artisans colony which were so influential in the Arts and Crafts movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Our next stop was a tour of the Gernatt Antique Automobile Collection. The collection is centered around the Cadillac brand but, also contains many other brands including Bentley and Pierce-Arrow. On Friday our first stop was the historic Forrest Lawn Cemetery. This is the final resting place of most of Buffalo's movers and shakers, including George N. Pierce founder of the Pierce-Arrow Motor Car Company. As we arrived exiting the George N. Pierce Mausoleum was an actor dressed in full motoring regalia, ankle length duster, goggles and all, speaking as George himself. Old George spoke of his time building his company. As he died in 1912 he said visitors had told him of many changes in American life, prohibition, women's voting rights, etc. He was quite entertaining. We then headed for a Paddle Wheeler boat ride and lunch aboard Miss Buffalo. We toured Lake Erie and into the Niagara River. On the return trip we accessed a working lock and dam. It was amazing to see how fast the water level changed in the lock. Saturday dawned with some rain but by Show time the sun was out and remained all day. The Show was held at the Buffalo Transportation museum. A good public crowd was on hand. The Buffalo natives seem to appreciate their history in auto making. The Awards Banquet was held that evening with awards being presented in four classes, plus a long distance award was given to a member who drove his 1931 Pierce-Arrow from San Diego to Buffalo for a total of 3100 miles. A good time was had by all and we look forward to the 2016 Annual Meet in Kerrville TX. 5
