Well 'Ol Number 35 is in the books. I think the move to June 1 for our 35th Annual Car Show was a good one. Our car count was down by a few this year over last but, the general public visitor count was up considerably. We had many positive comments about our Show. We were supported by our sister region GA/Al again. We thank them for making the trip. It's nearly impossible to find an open weekend in the car hobby these days. With competing old car activities hosted by nearby groups on Saturday, I think we did quite well. As usual, the West Georgia Region team pulled together like troopers to make it all happen. Special thanks to Bill Crowley, Mary and Fred Duncan, Bill Hearnburg, Charles Lassiter, Jim Nichols, Glenn and Debbie Novak, and Carol and Gary Moyses for all their efforts to make the show a big success. We're already making plans for improving the show next year. Stay tuned. Our June Event will be at the Cottage Landing Senior Living Center, 150 Cottage Lane Carrollton on June 25th. This is a Tuesday evening. Time will be 5PM to 7PM. We will be part of the Golden Years Expo. Our friends in the Golden City Cruisers were invited to display cars for the residents and graciously extended an invitation to the West Georgia Region to join them. The folks at Cottage Landing have offered to feed us dinner so they need a head count. Let one me or Liz know if you can attend. We'll begin counting noses at the meeting Thursday. How's that for a segue into the meeting notice? The June Meeting will be 6:30PM at La Trattoria on the Square in Carrollton. The meeting portion will be a debrief of the show. If you think this might be a boring meeting, trust me it won't be. In fact it's typically one of our more lively meetings as members relate some of the anecdotes that occurred during the show. One last item on Golden City Cruisers. Many of us have friends in the GCC. Our interests are the same. In the future the West Georgia Region will be partnering with the Golden City Cruisers to have fun. Speaking of similar interests. Nick Ware (Best of Show Winner) has passed on an invitation to ROMEO, Thursday mornings. No, we're not talking Shakespeare. It stands for Retired Old Men Eating Out. Location is the Trading Post restaurant in Villa Rica. Time, arrive 8 to 8:30 AM Thursday mornings. Sounds like fun. No rules, no by-laws, no memberships just breakfast and tire kicking. I'm quite sure ladies are welcome too. The Birdie had his water glass against the wall again. He tells me Bill Hearnburg has chrome shiny bits finished for his 57 Ford project. Also Charles Lassiter has been spotted recently trolling for a 49 Buick. Hope he hooks one soon. Hope to see everyone Thursday night at the Meeting. Happy Motoring Rick Club Meeting This Thursday June 6 LaTrattoria on the square 1

West Georgia Region AACA 2013 Car Show Re-cap By Glenn Novak Our 35th Annual Car Show this year was a big success and the weather cooperated very nicely. Moved from the first Saturday in May to the first Saturday in June this year, we just sort of got lucky and avoided both a potential Mayfest attendance conflict and the very real rain-out of May 4th. Held again at Mike Bell Chevrolet on U.S. 27 in Carrollton but this time on June 1st, we had 51 cars in attendance with only one pre-registered no-show. It may be that we stick with this date in the future but it is always something to consider and re-consider. We all want the best date for the most people and the fewest conflicts. Our team of ten or so showed up early around 8 am to get set up before any early public arrivals, and the first cars began appearing just before 9 am. Music was provided all day by DJ Brock Eady and our MC Bill Hearnburg handled the announcing for both door prizes and trophies. A couple of vendors showed up, one selling boiled peanuts and another doing hot dogs and burgers. Traffic direction, registration, and parking all seemed to run seamlessly, and the judges arrived in plenty of time as the show field continued to fill, row by row. And the temperatures climbed. Good thing we had plenty of free bottled water from Kroger to give away. We had lots of interesting cars and trucks show up, and the photos tell the story. The public milled around a good bit, looking at all the old iron and the newer muscle cars. Some of the more unusual vehicles present this year included a 1910 Model T Ford Touring driven over by Robert Carden, a 1947 Crosley owned by Gary and Carol Moyses, and a 1963 Volkswagon Double Cab driven over by Vince Raburn for his son who is in the Navy and stationed far away. Though in the minority, several nice trucks were present, and a couple of fine automobiles with For Sale signs on them were looking for new owners. Trophies and the 50/50 raffle were all given out just before the first trace of a very light drizzle began, and it took no time at all for our antique car and truck guests to clear out and head home, many with some fine trophies provided to our club by generous local companies and merchants. We met many nice people and made some new friends, and perhaps we shall gain new members from a positive first association with our club. We are again grateful to Mike Bell Chevrolet and to Zack Bell for hosting our event, and we appreciate all of our trophy and door prize sponsors this year. Continue to check our club website at in the coming days and weeks as your webmaster-in-training begins to find the time to load more photos of the event. The plan is to put up a picture of all the vehicles in the show as a supplement to this article with the award-winning cars and their owners. Thanks again to all the club members and friends who worked hard and supported our 35th annual show and helped make it a fun event and a successful fundraiser for our charities. 3

Our registration ladies - Mary Duncan, Carol Moyses, Debbie Novak. Our DJ for the day was the Carrollton' own Brock Eady! Spinning great tunes all day! The show field was full with many new cars to our show. We also enjoyed more spectator participation! Of course, a beautiful summer day helped a lot! 5

Finding Our Way To The 25th Anniversary AACA Founders' Tour The North Alabama Region hit it out of the park for the 25th Anniversary Founders' Tour. They hosted the first one back in The Tour was handled like a well oiled machine even with the typical hiccups that come along with such an undertaking. The Tour was based in Madison, Alabama. Madison is a suburb of Huntsville. Huntsville, known as "Rocket Town", is home to Redstone Arsenal and many high tech companies. This is where the Space Shuttle was created. Our first event was the opening banquet on Sunday evening at the Space and Rocket Center. Among the introductions was the three couples that had completed all 25 of the Founders' Tours. These folks have a real dedication to the AACA. Our first Tour day was Monday. While we had some rain, it did nothing to dampen the spirits of this Tour group. The highlight for us was Cathedral Caverns in Alabama. With world records such as, largest cave opening, largest stalactite column and several others, it was quite an impressive site. Cathedral Caverns has a Big Room, which is 792 feet long and 200 feet wide. Tuesday the skies cleared and we had a great tour to Falls Mill in southern Tennessee. This is a grist mill that has been operating with a water driven grist wheel since the 1850s. Next we headed a bit farther into Tennessee when we arrived in Tullahoma. What a treat to visit the Beechcraft Heritage Museum. Wade McNabb and his staff rolled out the red carpet for us. After perusing the incredible airplanes (the brand has always been one of my personal favorites) and engines on display we were treated an excellent lunch. We were the last ones to leave because Liz got a special treat. Sitting in a Beechcraft Bonanza like the one she flew in with her dad as a little girl and another leap into one of the Staggerwings. These were the Cadillac (or Pierce-Arrow!) of executive aircraft in the 1930s. Wooden surrounds at the windows, wooden inlays in the door and side panels - such a treat and I was jealous. I hated to leave but, on we must go to the Jack Daniel's Distillery. The Jack Daniel's distillery has been in the same location since the 1800s. They can barely keep up with demand. Much of their product goes overseas. Just goes to prove quality American products are still highly sought after around the world. Tuesday was topped off by some fabulous toppings at the Above: Entrance to Cathedral Caverns; below: Cathedral room Jacob Gurley bought the cave in 1955 and opened it to the public. His wife into the cave for the first time, she was struck by the beauty of one big room with all the stalagmites and stalactites and said that it looked like a "cathedral." Cathedral Caverns became a state park in It includes 461 acres of land near Grant, Alabama. The cave has a paved and lighted pathway that is 10 feet above the original path. The walk is a little over a mile for the round trip and takes an hour and 15 minutes. It is also wheelchair accessible. Cathedral Caverns holds six world records: The widest entrance of any commercial cave in the world. It is 25 feet tall and 128 feet wide. Home to "Goliath"--the largest stalagmite in the world. It measures 45 feet tall and 243 feet in circumstance. Largest flow stone wall, which is 32 feet tall and 135 feet long. The largest "frozen" waterfall. Largest stalagmite forest of any cave in the world. The most improbable formation in the world which is a stalagmite that is 35 feet tall and 3 inches wide! Cathedral Caverns also has a Crystal Room which is not open to the public. The formations are made of pure white calcite and just the vibrations from someone's voice would shatter over 70 percent of the formations. 7

R. D. Cole MFG, Co. in Newnan, Georgia built the grinding equipment for Falls Mill established in 1873 in southern Tennessee. What a small world! ice cream social that evening. Wednesday brought more sunshine and trips around Alabama to the Calhoun Robotics Center, Tennessee Valley Authority Shop, and Helen Keller's birth place and childhood home. The robots seem to understand each other in the Robotics Center. There was a large number of robots performing many different tasks. This is the only robotics school of it's kind the world. The TVA shops had the largest machine shop equipment I have ever seen. They need the huge machines because they build almost everything the TVA needs. They purchase some hardware items but, just about everything else they make. Truth be told, they even make some hard to find hardware items. Ivy Green is the birth place of Helen Keller and is in Tuscumbia, Alabama. The home contains the original furnishings from Helen Keller's family. It also tells the story of Helen Keller from birth all through her most interesting life. The little cottage where Ann Sullivan lived is nearby on the property. Thursday we remained in Alabama. We toured the world famous Ave Maria Grotto. This is located at the St. Bernard Abbey and Prep School. St. Bernard is a monastery for Catholic Benedictine monks. Brother Joseph Zoettl spent his spare time at the monastery building miniature models of religious and historic Helen Keller's family home, Ivy Green, where she lived with her brothers and her parents and her beloved teacher Ann Sullivan. The museum is a wonderful tribute to a remarkable woman and well worth a visit. 8 Right: the famous water pump.

buildings from around the world. Brother Zoettl used cement, sea shells, broken glass, marbles, old costume jewelry and anything else that was donated to build his creations. The detail and the vast number of statures is hard to imagine. He came to St. Bernards from Bavaria in the early 1900s and remained there until his death in It was said that of all the places he recreated, he had only actually been to six of them. The rest of the magnificent structures were done from drawings and photographs he found in books. Friday was a close in tour day. The rain had returned so that wasn't bad thing. We toured the North Alabama Railroad Museum, the old downtown area of Huntsville, and Huntsville Botanical Gardens. The North Alabama Railroad Museum was a real treat for us railroad buffs. They had a diesel switcher running on the siding for us. We were able to climb aboard and check out the old girl's mechanics. The Botanical Gardens is quite place. The flowers were beginning to bloom and the butterfly house was something to behold. We closed out the week with another fabulous banquet at the Space and Rocket Center this time dining in the huge hall that houses a real Saturn 5 Rocket! Liz and I sat at a table under the second to the last stage of the rocket with the nose capsule overhead of the Air Force Jazz Band. To their left was a Lunar Landing craft with all of its foil deployed and on the band's right side was one of the actual Apollo capsules that was retrieved from the Pacific ocean. That is the wonderful thing about old cars - you get to see such neat stuff! Many thanks to Bob Bentley and the North Alabama Region for all their hard work. It was well worth it for all the attendees. One of the hundreds of creations made by brother Joseph Zoettl The Switcher Engine's engine. Imagine a 4 cylinder engine in a locomotive. remember the pistons 24 inches in diameter. The banquet dinner under a Saturn 5 Rocket that stretches the entire length of the Davidson Center for Space Exploration. 9
