(478) com President s Message July 2015 Here it is July already and our 38 th Annual Car and Truck show is in the history books. Thanks to all members and friends who helped out this year. Our event was a big success and you can read more about it in this issue. We will have a full treasurer s report and discussion of our show at our July 2 nd meeting. Come prepared to share your honest and frank opinions about what went right with our show and what areas need to be re-examined and perhaps altered for next year. We are all delighted that Freddie got a very good report from his doctor and that his most recent scan shows no signs of cancer. We are so grateful to hear this wonderful news and look forward to enjoying many great car events with the Duncans this year and in coming years. Take a look at the sidebar in this issue of The Greasy Rag, as well as the Coming Events section of our website, to see what is coming up in these next weeks and months. Two AACA events one national and one local should be on your calendars right now: the 80 th Anniversary of AACA National Meet indoors in Louisville on July 18th and our very own Lowell Opry Cruise-In on Saturday, September 5th. Let s have a good turnout at the latter. Details coming soon. Six of us who hold joint membership in the West Georgia Region of AACA and the Georgia-Alabama Region attended the car show/club meeting/lunch in LaGrange on June 20 th and had a very good time. Held at the Vernon Woods Retirement Community, there were 14 old cars present and the residents and staff seemed to enjoy looking at the vehicles and talking with owners. Read more about it in this issue. Remember that Friday, July 10 th is the 6 th Annual Collector Car Appreciation Day. It is the one day set aside for folks like us to make a point to show off their collector cars in any way possible or convenient. The point is to let the world know we exist and to share our hobby. If I don t get a chance to cruise Maple Street that day, perhaps I will park a couple of cars out front on the driveway and beautify the neighborhood. If anybody wants to cruise, let me know. Our next club meeting is once again at American Pie at 6:30 pm on Thursday, July 2nd. After our meal and business meeting, we will again have a special program to inform and entertain. Please try to attend if your schedule permits. Enjoy the Ride! Glenn Next Meeting JULY 2ND at 6:30 PM American Pie Maple St. 1

3 38 th Annual AACA Car Show Re-cap By Glenn Novak Our West Georgia Region of AACA had a very successful 38 th Annual Collector Car and Truck Show on Saturday, June 13 th. A hot and humid day was far better than rain, and we had over 70 vehicles registered. Held again at Mike Bell Chevrolet on Highway 27 North in Carrollton, folks began arriving shortly after 8 am and we had a pretty full parking lot by noon. The general public seemed to enjoy themselves as much as the car owners who took the time and made the effort to get their fine cars cleaned up and ready for judging. There was plenty of variety on the show field that day, ranging in years from 1927 to We tried out our idea of an Arts & Crafts Show for the first time this year and had four vendors set up their wares on the edge of the show. It looked like Lara conducted some home-made jewelry business from her booth, and Shawn s chilled salads and desserts proved a refreshing and healthy alternative to a standard burger lunch. Other additions this year included a live radio remote broadcast by Great Classics 98.7 FM, a bounce house for the kids, and free snow cones for anyone who cared to line up. Stay tuned to both the West Georgia Shopper and to our club website for more photos and the names of all the class award winners this year. We are grateful to all of our trophy sponsors, to our members who actually got the donations, to James Collier who brought us our first ever special Corvette trophy to hand out, and to Zack Bell for his generous support and the use of his space and tent to stage our event. Finally, thanks to Liz and Rick Horne for organizing the show and making it all happen, and to all of our members who assisted in so many ways, from distributing flyers to handling parking, registration and set up, to selling raffle tickets, to helping our vendors with tables and tents, and to announcing and presenting awards, door prizes, and 50/50. Come to our July 2 nd meeting and find out what we spent, what we took in, and our 2015 profit, much of which will go to the charities we select during the fall. I guess June 11, 2016 is next year s car show equiva lent date. Pencil it in now until we vote to make it official or decide to change it to something else. Our goal for 2016: more cars and more members. 3

7 a...says it all! Vernon Woods Retirement Community Car Show By Glenn Novak On Saturday, June 20 th, the Georgia-Alabama Region of AACA held its annual car show and luncheon on the grounds of the Vernon Woods Retirement Community in LaGrange, GA. Fourteen old cars showed up and both the owners and the residents enjoyed themselves in very attractive surroundings and enough shade to keep the morning hours very tolerable. The Novaks took their Buick Wildcat coupe and followed the Duncans down in their Mustang convertible. Along with the Norrises, that made for three couples present who hold joint regional memberships with our club and theirs. Among several Model A Fords and some nice street rods, cars that received a lot of resident attention were Jimmy Matthews 1961 Studebaker, Charles and Lynne Norris Austin Healey, and Brent and Susan Burdick s original 1937 Oldsmobile sedan. The show went from 10 am to noon and was followed by a nice BBQ lunch inside the air conditioned residential dining room. Our event wrapped up after the club s official June business meeting. We all had a very good time and were thrilled that the weather cooperated and brought us no rain. 7

8 West Georgia AACA well represented at Austin - Bantam meet in Charleston, SC By Gary Moyses The Horne s and Moyses traveled Mt Pleasant, South Carolina, June 15-18, 2015, to attend the 52 nd National American Austin Bantam Club Meet. Preparation included fitting two American Austins inside a 24 foot enclosed trailer commonly used to haul one large car. An Austin is about ten feet long and weighs only a quarter of a normal car, so the addition of necessary floor tie-downs were all that was required. The cars were loaded on Sunday, 14 June, so we could get an early start on Monday morning. Liz, Rick, Carol and Gary were on the road by 8:30 Monday morning. A stop in Augusta provided lunch for all at the Whole Foods Market. We arrived in Mount Pleasant in mid-afternoon to temperatures in the mid- 90s and humidity to match (not a good thing for a primarily outside event). There were a dozen cars ahead of us and already parked in what shade the trees could provide. Our trailer was positioned with all others and disconnected. Registration took only a few minutes, followed by reunions and introductions with other club members. General conversations always included; who are you, where are you from, what car did you bring, and do you plan to sell anything at the swap meet tomorrow. Our two cars were then unloaded and parked for the evening. The Pie Wagon engine would not run very well after unloading, which generated at least 20 suggestions as to what could be wrong. Cleaning out the fuel line and filter fixed it and the car was ready to go. A meet and greet evening picnic moved inside the host motel to avoid the high outside temperature. There were about 50 club members present along with 19 cars (some still inside their trailers). As the evening temperatures dropped, conversations moved outside to the cars where talk of restoration and special features continued until dark. Tuesday started early with a swap meet where a fair amount of parts and money changed hands. Considering the rarity of the cars, there was a lot of stuff to look at. At 10:00 the cars were prepared for a 15 mile tour that took everyone to Ft Moultrie and back. Average speed for these cars is about 30 miles per hour and local traffic did not give much slack to the parade of these munchkin cars. All cars made it there and back without a hitch, which says a lot for the preparation the owners made to keep these 65+ 8

10 year old cars roadworthy. The balance of the day was spent avoiding the high temperatures and finding food. Wednesday morning was spent preparing and judging cars. A 200 point system is used to judge cars, with deductions made for incorrect parts and features. A minimum number of points is required to attain either bronze, silver, or gold awards. Although Liz did not expect to receive an award, she wanted to have the judging sheets so she could make necessary corrections for an award next year. Gary didn t expect any award either, since there is no separate class for cute special bodied cars. The judges did not buy into the argument that custom cars cannot be incorrect. The balance of the day was taken up with a visit to the Yorktown aircraft carrier exhibit, eating well and avoiding the high temperatures. As evening cooled everyone was back out looking at cars and sharing information. Thursday morning started with a business meeting, a presentation for next year s meet location in Monroe Michigan, followed by a seminar on ways to fix or fabricate the necessary parts to keep these little cars on the road. The afternoon schedule allowed for visiting Charleston s many sights and shopping. Unfortunately, the Wednesday evening shootings in Charleston caused most plans to be cancelled. The cars were reloaded into the trailer and prepared for the drive home on Friday. Temperatures were very hot again which made it difficult to stay outside. The Thursday evening banquet included a meal, door prizes, a charity auction and awards. Liz won a bronze award for her 1930 Austin. Although unexpected, the objective now is what will take to get a silver or a gold. We departed for home early Friday morning to avoid another expected hot and humid day. Seven hours later Gary s Pie Wagon did not want to run again after unloading. This time it was pushed into the garage without ceremony and found to have more trash in the fuel filter. Except for the local crisis and unseasonable temperatures everything went as planned. Our appetites are wetted for next year s meet in the cooler north.
