1 VETTE NEWS Volume 32, Issue 9 President s Corner What s Happening September Hello everyone, The month of August was pretty busy! Starting with St. Gabriel s, C.O.B. once again had a good turnout. Then came our Corvette Caravan, one hundred forty seven vettes of all colors and generations, one through six. With any luck we will see a couple of Sting Rays (seventh generation) next year. By the way next year is the Tenth year for our caravan so we are looking for some new ideas to possibly add to the show. According to our chairman John Meyerhoff there were forty five club cars, which to the best of our knowledge was the best attended caravan by C.O.B. members to date. Thanks to everyone who was there. Next came our Ice-Cream social, run by Frank Pastore. We met at Hoovers in the North towns. A real nice place with great ice cream and food. We had over forty members attend. I was told Hoovers has a car show every Sunday and they get a couple hundred cars, so if you re in the Ward Rd. area defiantly stop in and check it out. Then came our C.O.B. picnic, this year we went outside the box and changed the venue and went to Hamburg to a place called The Lodge, and guess what it did not Rain! Ha Ha All kidding aside the place was nice, food was great and the company was even better. I believe we had over eighty people attended. We had a horse shoe marathon with Frank and Rich Z being the big winners. A special THANKS to our Picnic Committee. I m in the middle of packing for Corvettes at Carlisle and once again looks like it is going to be a good turnout with some seasoned veterans and some rookies. We should have a lot of fun. I will let you know how it all turns our next month. DINNER AT SAVATORE S I have reserved a date at Salvatore s Italian Gardens where we hold our Super Cruise for September 18th at 6PM where we can all meet as a club and use our gift certificates. There will be a sign up sheet at the picnic and at our next meeting. If you are unable to attend either of those functions please call me if you would like to join us. I will be passing out the certificates at the picnic and our next meeting if you have not already received yours. 5 9 th Annual COB Corvette Caravan At 9:45 AM there was a short drivers meeting, after which we got into the Vettes and got ready to 'hit the road' at exactly 10AM. Our drive was non-stop 80 miles and two hours long, so most people took advantage of a restroom at Emerlings and didn't drink too much coffee!!! If you had stop for a potty break, you were on your own, but you did have an explicit set of directions with mileages.there were a couple of rough tracks that did require caution, on Genesee between RT 16 and North Woods Rd, and on Perry Rd. between North Java and Rt 77, right by Reisdorf Brothers Feed Mill. Poplar Tree Rd, from Pee Dee Rd. to Wethersfield Rd, was oiled and stoned several months ago. Several of us have driven the road more than once and we didn't feel it was a problem. We just allowed a little more room between cars and DIDN'T get over to the edge of the road. On the final leg of our trip, on Rt 33, we had to be aware that Genesee St., which took us to Salvatores, takes a right turn on Rt 33 where Walden Ave. begins, there was a 7-11 store in the V. where we turned right, but we were all close enough together that this was not be an issue. We had 150 Corvettes in this year's Caravan and COB would to thank you for your interest and support!! A very special Thank You to Emerling Chevrolet in Boston N.Y.for all the support. A big Thank You to Salvatore s Italian Gardens Restaurant for a great brunch and Flappys for the continental breakfast and to all of the Police and Fire Personnel who worked Traffic Control who really make this a safe successful caravan every year. The Police and Fire companies are Boston, East Concord, Arcade, Eagle Hose, North Java, Strykersville, Sheldon, Darien Center, and Crittenden. The Erie County Sheriff s and the Lancaster Police. 12 Steering Wheel Hand Position For those of us who took a driver education course prior to the inclusion of airbags in automobiles (around the 1980's), you probably were taught that the recommended position of your hands was at the ten o'clock and the two o'clock position on the steering wheel. Now, because of the way airbags function when they deploy, there is a new recommended hand position, and that is: the nine o'clock and three o'clock grip. Your thumbs should now be placed along the rim of the wheel instead of looping around it. The reasoning is that in a accident in which the airbags deploy, your hands in the old position could be thrown into your head or even fracture your thumbs. We are now also cautioned not to rest our hands on the wheel hub or grab same in a underhand grip while turning which could result in a broken arm(s) in the event of a collision. It is also said that the recommended grip gives you better control of the vehicle (i.e. race car drivers grip) but others will say that this could be a subject of debate.
