1 VETTE NEWS Volume 29, Issue 4 April 2010 President s Corner Spring has finally sprung. Even though the temperature is still in the 40 s most days, the salt has been washed away by the rain and we are starting to see cruise cars on the road. Hopefully the weather keeps improving and we should see members bringing their rides to the April 10 meeting and to the Annual Dinner Dance on April 17. As a reminder if you signed up to attend the dinner but have not paid, the April meeting will be your last chance to pay. Please make your check out to Corvettes of Buffalo and hand it to one of our cochair persons Connie Giovino or Lynn Ienco. They will record your name and pass the check to our treasurer, Mel. On Wednesday, March 24 we held our annual Calendar of Events meeting. Over twenty members were in attendance. The members came up with some new events to spice up the cruise season along with many old favorites. As you know on any given night of the week there are several cruise nights to choose from. With our membership extending from Southern Ontario down to the southern tier of NYS it is tough to figure which cruise to attend to socialize with COB members. In order to visit different cruise nights possibly in your town, I have suggested a Cruise Night of the Week rotating to different locations in WNY. With so many to choose from starting in May and running to the end of September it was necessary on some weeks to plan on 2 cruises a week where we hope to see a large contingent of members. 3 UPDATE FROM 03 In the July 2003 issue of this newsletter I submitted a article entitled "First one, Last one" referring to our 2000 coupe and our first Corvette a h.p. convertible. The 2000 was destined to be our last Corvette and was treated, maintained and upgraded as such.. Then the C-6's were produced and I was mildly impressed, but our coupe was relatively new and we were well satisfied not only with its looks but also with its performance. After last summers trip to Saranac Lake, I received a correspondence from the Meegans (Joan & Bob) and Joan had highlighted a article from Saranac s Found Caravan Club newsletter which extolled the virtues of the new Grand Sport. My interest peaked and I began research on the Corvette Forum, other automobile websites and magazines. The Vette fever grew and after some long discussions it was decided that the 2000 would not be the last one. Our quest for a Grand Sport was eventually abandoned due to the additional cost over a base coupe and the fact that it was set up as a performance vehicle. We then started pricing standard coupes and found that the prices too were pretty much standard. During this endeavor, I received a call from Joan who related that the owner of Upstate Chevrolet in Attica N.Y. would like to meet me and discuss a possible purchase. In January 2010 we took a ride to this dealership and met owner Frank Bork who incidentally owns six Corvettes and coincidentally whose father in law happened to work in the same profession as I did and is a person who I know. Frank introduced us to his sales manager Al Ficarella and after some additional deep thought it was decided to go forward and order a 2010 Crystal Red Metallic coupe with the museum delivery. I received a call from Al about a week after the sale and he informed me that the TPW (target production week) for the vehicle was February 15, I waited about a week after this TPW and and called Lori Bieschke who is the Assistant to the delivery manager at the Corvette Museum and she informed me that our car was indeed built on the 15th. and was at the museum. We then discussed a date to pick up the car and it was decided that March 17th. St. Patrick's Day would also be our day. We arrived at Bowling Green Ky. on the evening of the 16th. and the next morning were picked up at our hotel by Ron Barton, a delivery team member assigned to us for the day. We opted to go to the factory first and took the guided tour to watch the production process in a more detailed and laid back manner than what we were allowed during the 50th. anniversary in 03 or the museums anniversary last fall. At the end of the assembly line, Ruth was summoned and entered a brand new coupe and was allowed to start the vehicle for the first time and was then given a certificate attesting to the fact that she had assisted in the "birth" of this car. Unfortunately we could not video or still picture this event. But upon leaving the factory we were allowed to photograph our C.O.B. logo in the lobby display case, something that was not possible on the clubs two previous visits Continued on pg 4 CORVETTES of BUFFALO pg 3

4 The story doesn't end here. I had previously had a GM bra and some splash guards delivered to the museum and I foolishly thought that these items could be installed before we left the premises because there was no way that the car was going to be driven some 600+ miles on interstate roads without some sort of "protection". There would be nothing worse than arriving home with a brand new car with sandblasted rocker panels, wheel wells or a front end with stone chips. Unfortunately the add ons could not be attached, so here I was under the museums portico feverishly attempting to attach the bra as the museum was preparing to close for the day. Realizing that this was going to be a futile effort, I implored Ruth to go inside and determine if Gary could suggest some nearby auto shop who could assist me. We were fortunate to be sent to Jim Van Dorn, owner of AUTO MASTERS & Corvette specialists which was located just down the road from our hotel. Early the next morning I took the car to Jim and turned it over to his employee/technician who went to work installing the bra all the while wearing blue surgical gloves. During this process, I nearly had a fit because from my vantage point in the office I saw the vehicle was about to be raised on a four point lift and I asked Jim "what for?" and he replied it was done so that his guy would not have to lie on the ground during the project. I watched as both men checked the lift points along with the proper metal jacking pucks and they were very careful to see that the lift did not contact the rockers. For those who question how hard could it be to snap a vinyl panel on the front of a Vette, let me tell you it's not a one person task on the first attempt. Jim who is a good size guy had to put with all his weight on the material while his employee pulled and finally attached it to the inside of the fenders. Now, as installing the splash guards was out of the question because we wanted to get on the road and additionally this install would require the rear wheels to be pulled along with some drilling. I had come prepared though, and applied blue painters tape to the rocker panels and the wheel wells and Jim gave me a hand to speed up the process. If you go to Bowling Green and need Corvette help I suggest you contact Jim. He is a colorful person, a lifetime member of the museum, former Corvette (Pirate Race Team-I think) racer and quite knowledgeable and willing to talk to you, and he has some great Vette stories. 5 Continued from pg 4 O.K., with the car taped up, we left B.G. and headed to Dublin Ohio and the Drury Inn where the club had stayed last September. We arrived in time for the last 45 minutes of the FREE cocktail hour and then proceeded to have dinner at the nearby Macaroni Factory, also where the club had dined previously. After an overnight stay, we headed back to C.O.B. country and arrived safely that afternoon. During the ride home, we had to vary our speed so as to break in the engine which had a mere 7 miles on the odometer when we left Kentucky and thus the trip took a little longer than usual. Arriving home, we had over 600 miles on the clock and managed almost 27 m.p.g., which is not bad for a brand new 430 h.p. small block V-8. Revive the wave! Bruce Mussehl NCCC Governor Hello, My name is Ray Schafer and I am a founding member of Corvettes of Buffalo since its inception in A known fact of longevity and success is having written procedures. I believe that there should be language outlining functions of which National Council of Corvette Clubs(NCCC) should be included. It is a phenomenal feeling belonging to a national organization. Our clubs' name is known across the continental United States and we are welcome to join functions in other areas with open arms. Our club is shielded from financial liability that may happen during any of our events of which there are many with the membership growing. Maintaining membership in National Council has been a topic of conversation every three to five years within Corvettes of Buffalo. The membership of Corvettes of Buffalo has traditionally not participated in regional events, although, we are welcome to partake at these events. The main benefit that Corvettes of Buffalo has historically utilized is the affordable insurance protection that is provided through membership in N.C.C.C. The personal liability issue of Corvettes of Buffalo in the event of an unforeseen catastrophic event is protected under the umbrella of NCCC insurance. Continued next column With the large number of membership currently in Corvettes of Buffalo, becoming familiar with NCCC sponsored events presents a much wider spectrum of corvetting activities than what we have traditionally been involved in. To close, language of affiliation with National Council of Corvette Clubs is totally appropriate in the bylaws of an NCCC affiliated corvette club. 6 CLASSIC CAR INSURANCE CORNER Believe it or not, we only have one or two months before car show, cruise nights, and just plain having fun with our classic cars is in full swing again! The 17 th annual 2010 Cavalcade of Cars, which was held March 5 th - 7 th. The indoor car show was held at the Erie County Fairgrounds in Hamburg, New York. Again, it was a smashing success. Classic cars came from all over the country and locally. It was very exciting to see all the classic cars that were so tastefully restored. There were Stock, Custom, Street Rods, Rat Rods, Lead Sleds, Pro Street and Race Ready vehicles. Some of the vehicles were professionally restored while others were restored by their owners. One thing for sure was that they were all beautiful, creative, and tastefully constructed. The wonderful participants of the Kustom Kulture Pin Striping crew came from all over the USA to raise money for the Handicapped Children Learning Center. Thousands of dollars were raised as a result of the donations received for pinstriped art items, a silent auction, a Chinese auction and personal items brought in for pin striping. As usual, they did a fantastic job and they continue to participate every year. If you missed the show this year, mark down the dates and try to attend next year. Bring a youngster with you, they will certainly enjoy this dynamite event too! As the 2010 Classic Car and Motor Cycle season begins, I would like to relay some important information that may prove helpful to you regarding driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Those of us who consume any amount of the foregoing become impaired, to one degree or another. Our reaction time is often slower, or judgment and good sense can become altered. A sober accident is bad enough, but an accident that involves liquor or drugs is devastating. The amount of physical and mental suffering that can be inflicted upon those that we love, friends and even strangers is immense. If the driver of a vehicle is impaired at the time of an accident, the Personal Injury Protection, (No Fault), portion of the auto insurance policy is VOID. Continued next column This is the coverage that provides medical expense and loss of wages for the driver, all occupants of the car, and any pedestrian that may be involved in the accident, no matter who is at fault. Additionally, a DWI, DUI, DWAI remains on one s motor vehicle record for TEN YEARS. That violation alone will cause one to be ineligible for Classic Car Insurance and will result in a drastic increase in the cost of regular car insurance too. If you become impaired, Be Smart DON T DRIVE, call a friend, take a cab, or drive with a nondrinking designated driver. I you have any questions regarding Classic Car Insurance or any type of insurance, please feel free to call Ron or Jodi at , jgiovino@walshins.com, we are always here to help. In our next news letter, we will give you specific information regarding the coverage s and limits of Personal Injury Protection, (No Fault).
