MODEL CHOICE Value for money, this Cararama 1/43 scale model by Hongwell is, I think, the best on the NZ market. Made in China by Hongwell Toys Ltd, it has been on the NZ market for a couple of years, selling for around $20 to $30. It s a very detailed model, great paint finish with very fine painted chrome strips along the body work, amber and red tail lights and amber marker lights on the front, along with a fully detailed interior, not that it is easily seen. The P4 Rover 90 seems to be the only Rover model available at this stage and is available in black or a couple of 2 tone options. Neither 2 tone options are close to original colours, that s why I choose black. Bernie. From The Editor The case of the Pregnant Lady. A lady about 8 months pregnant got on a bus. She noticed the man opposite her was smiling at her. She immediately moved to another seat. Then the smile turned into a grin, so she moved again. The man seemed more amused. When on the fourth move, the man burst out laughing, she complained to the driver and he had the man arrested. The case came up in court. The judge asked the man (about 20 years old) what he had to say for himself. The man replied," Well your Honour, it was like this: When the lady got on the bus, couldn't help but notice her condition. She sat down under a sign that said," The double Mint Twins are coming" and I grinned. Then she moved and sat under a sign that said,:logan's Liniment will reduce the swelling" and I had to smile. Then she placed herself under a deodorant sign that said" William's Big Stick Did the Trick" and I could hardly contain myself. But your Honour, when she moved the fourth time and sat under a sign that said," Goodyear Rubber could have prevented this accident!"...i just lost it. CASE DISMISSED!. 14 Club Subscriptions. Payment of subscriptions can be made at any branch of the Westpac Bank near you. The lodgement to be made out to Westpac Bank, Moray Place Branch, Rover Car Club Of Otago, Account number and add your name. Bumper Sticker Suggestion Of The Month Where there's a will, I want to be in it. 3

Thank you for your confidence in us, returning Alistair, Ray and myself again. Going back a tad, thank you to all the members who made their Rovers available for the Auto-Spectacular at the Edgar Stadium on Saturday 3 rd July just before our AGM. The seasons was the theme, so Walton Browns P2 ( black) on skis as winter, Jan Smiths 600 series was spring ( green) daffodils, Alistair McInnes 600 series was spring (gold) and Brett Dakers P ( maroon) leaves was autumn. We tried but the Mini Club won the prize again, with a most impressive decorama display. Our AGM at Eat venue went well and everyone appeared to relax and enjoy themselves at a different venue. I managed to take a few photos at the Auto-spectacular with the snaps reproduced in this newsletter I hope after a bit of expert adjustments by Jeff as my flash is not that great in the Edgar Stadium. You can judge. I omitted in my annual report to thank or mention Jeff Sparrow for his efforts on our webpage which is top class and worth looking at. Thanks Jeff for work over the past year and continued efforts on the Rover Car Clubs behalf. Writing this I'm almost packed ready to leave in the morning for Perth W.A. They tell me that they have had a minus 1oC morning lowest since records began in Still I've been in training here so it should not be too bad. Hoping to attend a Western Australian Rover and Land Rover Club meeting to Perth again while over there. Remember to keep in contact and read the Events Calendar, we are coming out of hibernation now. See you all in August on my return Norman & Carleen S. President ( again). Safe & Happy Roving. 5
6 NOVE ROVE 6 th & 7 th of November 2010 We are to meet up with some Canterbury Club Members at Waimate at 12 noon on Saturday the 6 th Bring a picnic lunch to eat at the park, far end of the main street. There are toilets and shelter there if it s needed. After lunch we will have a look through the Model Gallery Garage and the Ladies can look over the antique shops next door if they would rather. Then it s off to Kurow, if weather is fine we ll travel over the Meyers Pass to the Hakataramea Valley to Kurow. If wet, or for those that would rather, we ll go via the main road. Kurow has a museum and a second hand shop, both worth a look, plus there is a Caltex fuel stop there. Then on to Otematata via the back of the lake to stay at the Otematata Lakes Hotel. Our evening meal is organised at a local Lodge. Sunday we ll head down to Duntroon to check out the local attractions, then down through the ancient Elephant Rocks and Rock Art area and end up at the Maheno Tavern for a bar lunch. Then we can make our own way home. There is some fine tuning to be done but this is the basic plan. All bookings to be made through ME. Registration fee is $5 per couple. Basic costs are as follows: Hotel accommodation, (1 double bed, 1 single, and ensuite) plus 2 cooked breakfasts = $110. Evening Lodge meal. $20 per head. Sunday bar lunch prices range from $10 up. Rove Co-ordinator: Bernie Halford Ph Orr St, Concord, Dunedin bshalford@xtra.co.nz 17 registrations as of 5/7/10 BAND SAW: A large stationary power saw primarily used by most shops to cut good aluminium sheet into smaller pieces that more easily fit into the trash can after you cut on the inside of the line instead of on the outside. TWO-TON ENGINE HOIST: A tool for testing the maximum tensile strength of everything you forgot to disconnect. PHILLIPS SCREWDRIVER: Normally used to stab the vacuum seals under lids or for opening old-style paper-and-tin oil cans and splashing oil on your shirt; but can also be used, as the name implies, to strip out Phillips screw heads. STRAIGHT SCREWDRIVER: A tool for opening paint cans. Sometimes used to convert common slotted screws into non-removable screws and butchering your palms. PRY BAR: A tool used to crumple the metal surrounding that clip or bracket you needed to remove in order to replace a 50 cent part. HOSE CUTTER: A tool used to make hoses too short. HAMMER: Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to locate the most expensive parts adjacent the object we are trying to hit. UTILITY KNIFE: Used to open and slice through the contents of cardboard cartons delivered to your front door. Works particularly well on contents such as pillows, liquids in plastic bottles, collector magazines, refund cheques and rubber or plastic parts. Especially useful for slicing work clothes, but only while in use. SON OF A B**** TOOL: Any handy tool that you grab and throw across the garage while yelling Son of a b**** " at the top of your lungs. It is also, most often, the next tool that you will need regardless of which tool preceded it. That's a Mans Work Shop! 11
Tools Explained DRILL PRESS: A tall upright machine useful for suddenly snatching flat metal bar stock out of your hands so that it smacks you in the chest and flings your beer across the room, denting the freshly-painted project which you had carefully set in the corner where nothing could get to it. WIRE WHEEL: Cleans paint off bolts and then throws them somewhere under the workbench with the speed of light. Also removes fingerprints and hard-earned calluses from fingers in about the time it takes you to say, "Oh, s---!" SKILL SAW: A portable cutting tool used to make studs too short. PLIERS: Used to round off bolt heads. Sometimes used in the creation of blood-blisters. BELT SANDER: An electric sanding tool commonly used to convert minor touch-up jobs into major refinishing jobs. HACKSAW: One of a family of cutting tools built on the Ouija board principle. It transforms human energy into a crooked, unpredictable motion, and the more you attempt to influence its course, the more dismal your future becomes. VISE-GRIPS: Generally used after pliers to completely round off bolt heads. If nothing else is available, they can also be used to transfer intense welding heat to the palm of your hand. OXYACETYLENE TORCH: Used almost entirely for lighting various flammable objects in your shop on fire. Also handy for igniting the grease inside the wheel hub out of which you wanted to remove a bearing race but will now be unusable. Rover Car Club of Otago Members cars on display at the Dunedin Auto-Spectacular. 3 July TABLE SAW: A large stationary power tool commonly used to launch wood projectiles for testing wall integrity. HYDRAULIC FLOOR JACK: Used for lowering an automobile to the ground after you have installed your new brake shoes, trapping the jack handle firmly under the bumper. 7
8 ASSOCIATION OF ROVER CAR CLUBS OF NEW ZEALAND Rover Car Club Nelson Inc) July 2010 P.O.Box 2170 Stoke NELSON 7041 NEWSLETTER NUMBER FIVE. Greetings to all members. A.R.C.C. WEBSITE. Thank you to Otago, Waikato, Taranaki, Bay of Plenty and Nelson Clubs, which responded to my request for feedback on these topics. Thank you to the Clubs which supported the set-up of the website. We now go ahead with the procedure of getting this running and for me this will be a learning curve as I know little about how these things work. Fortunately I can leave the technical side to the experts but I hope to see all Clubs actively using the site for advertising what they are doing and listing items like for sales and wanted, if this facility is available. The ARCC is paying for the set-up and running costs of the website and will have links to the four existing websites, Auckland, Wellington, Canterbury and Otago. MATERIAL FOR WEBSITE. I hope all Clubs will wish to have some information about themselves, their Club meetings, members, spare parts, activities, show days, local service facilities and perhaps something of the tourist attractions of their area and accommodation available. I shall be placing the listing of contacts for all NZ Clubs, which is basically the listing as it appears in NZ Classic Car magazine, links to the four existing Websites, something about the ARCC. and the Nelson Club s listings and leave the Clubs to decide what material they wish to submit. Please send material to Roy Hughes in Christchurch, as he is the contact with the webmaster. royhsyncom@xtra.co.nz If anyone wants to look at my material for ideas, just let me know, but I m sure you all have great ideas of how you want to show your Club and local area. NATIONAL NEWSLETTER. Most Clubs wish to retain their own Newsletters, indeed I think this is an essential part of each Club, to notify members of coming events and just generally keep in touch with membership. Most Clubs have expressed support for the National Newsletter with some complete membership intending to subscribe and others will be a mix of individual subs. and perhaps a copy or two being purchased for Club library, general readers. It will be interesting to see how this evolves over the next few months. Would all Clubs now send a firm indication of the number of Newsletters they wish to purchase, to Roy so that he can plan his production. I d like to close by quoting David Raven, Deputy Secretary ARCC. I should point out that the intention of the website and National Newsletter is to improve communications between the Clubs and to generally give members an even better service. The intention certainly isn t to get a national club by stealth. We have heard loud and clear that members like the regional nature of the Clubs, and this will continue. Anne and I will be in Europe from mid July to mid August, enjoying warmer weather, a river cruise and coach tour, so for any ARCC matter please contact David. davidr@odyssey.co.nz Kind regards, Chris Clark. 9
