Hot Summer Days Ahead August is going to be HOTTER!!! than July if that is possible. Beginning with the regular monthly meeting on the 3 rd. Today at the meeting we passed around a sign-up sheet for the Rally. If you were not there to sign in for a dish this is just to let you know what we will need. We need everyone to help us out for the Rally by bringing a side dish and a dessert if you can. When we speak as in WE that means all of us in Chapter D are putting on this rally and need all the help and donations we can get. We need Potato Salad, Baked Beans and any kind of Desserts. Any help would be appreciated. If you want to contact an officer or staff member to tell them what you would like to bring, it would be fine or if you just want to bring it without contacting, that would be fine too Just help us to make this a Rally to remember!!! Newsletter Editor Kathy Hall

August News From Your MED Coordinators Keith and Sherry Sanders July was a busy and fun month for Chapter D. It might have been hot but that did not stop the fun. We showed our pride from the East Coast to Colorado in the west. Not only have a lot of miles been racked-up by Chapter D members, but we are all proud to have a Wing Ding Bike Show Winner in our chapter. Congratulations go out to Bobby and Arlean Webb for their big win! Chapter D had 8 members attend Wing Ding. I would say that was a good showing! Let s start making plans to attend Wing Ding next year in Tulsa. The chapter pride was shinning the night of July 17 th with 24 members attending the dinner ride. We covered the parking lot at Couch s Bar-B-Q with Gold Wings and one blue truck! (Sherry had some dental work and could not wear her helmet.) hint, it was real hot that night!!! So See, if it is to hot, to cold, to wet or you have a tooth pulled come in the car! You will not be the first. Our next dinner ride will be August 21 st at Wild Hog Bar- B-Q located at the corner of Stadium and Highland. We will meet there at 7:00. Come join the fun and have a good meal.

Chapter D is proud to place Garrie and Brenda Ollie in the SPOTLIGHT this month. If you look in Webster s dictionary under the words TRAVEL, GO, or FUN you might find their names listed. They enjoy all modes of TRAVEL from cruise ships to motorcycles. Mention the word GO and they are usually ready. If you want to have FUN just take a ride with them. They both have a nack at making any situation fun. Garrie and Brenda have been married 36 years and have 2 sons. One son lives in Bentonville, Arkansas and the other in Kissimmee, Florida. They have made their home in Marion since 1988 and before that lived in Jonesboro for 15 years. Garrie is retired from the U.S. Treasury. Brenda is retired from the Marion School District. They have been members of GWRRA since 2007 and have attended several rallies and other motorcycle events. Garrie and Brenda ride a 1990 Gold Wing Trike. They have won several awards with that chrome covered trike! Brenda enjoys sewing and working in her flower beds. Garrie enjoys playing ping pong (when he can find someone to play with) and riding their trike. Garrie and Brenda are proud of their trike and many other things, but there is one word you can say that will bring a big smile to both of their faces. Just say the word GRAND-DAUGHTER and watch them. When you hear Garrie and Brenda talk about going to Florida you might think they are going to the beach. No beach for them, they are going to see Nyla Renae. Nyla will be 3 yearsold this September so you can bet Garrie and Brenda will be in Florida. You have to wonder if Garrie is teaching Nyla to play ping pong! If you have never had a chance to hear some of Garrie s stories about his travels with the U.S. Treasury you have missed some good stories. They are a great couple and Chapter D is lucky to have them as members. Submitted by: Keith and Sherry Sanders, MED Coordinators, AR-D August 2008

GOLD WING ROAD RIDERS ASSOCIATION ARKANSAS GWRRA Chapter D Jonesboro Arkansas Contact Information Kathy Hall or Tommy Brown or Keith & Sherry Sanders or Art Reese As a member of a world wide Organization with more than members, we have a rally each year to raise money for Battered Women s Shelter. We collect and buy personal hygiene items for them to use because they will have left a violent situation possibly in the middle of the night just to protect themselves and their small children. Without a place to go for their safety, they struggle on a daily basis just to stay alive. Think of yourself in one of these situations not knowing if your children will be fed or if you will have a place to lie down at night. We are asking you to become one of our sponsors. If you could help us with this, we will display your name on our banner at our events. We are asking you to donate whatever you feel that you can. Whether baby diapers, personal products, or maybe a gift certificate, that would in turn bring our guest to your establishment to spend this certificate. Please help us to help them. Our Goals Train our members to reduce risk. Improve motorcycling image. To increase motorist awareness Our Motto Friends for Fun, Safety, and Knowledge

From the Chapter Director As the hot summer days are upon us, there are not many riders that desire to get out and ride in this heat. We did have 24 members to go to Paragould to Couch s BBQ July 17 for our 3 rd Thursday dinner. We have a lot of fun at these dinners. If you do not participate at these you are missing a great time. On Sat. July 19 th Chapter D met with Chapter W at the Cowboy Grill in Caraway for a time of fellowship and eating. There were 16 from Chapter D and 8 from Chapter W. We spent as much time in the parking lot as we did the restaurant. On July 26 th there were 16 bikes and trikes, 21 riders and co-riders that went to Sikeston for the first International trike rally. After the rally there were 17 that went to Lambert s to eat, what some good food. We were blessed today to have Larry Penetent, Ar. District Trainer, at our meeting. He had a great presentation of the Horizons program that is helpful to all members, especially for new officers and staff members. He also touched on the Rider Ed. as pertaining to a district trainer. It is always fun when Larry is around. August 9 th is Chapter B Rally in Rogers. Robert Holmes and I are planning on traveling to Rogers for their rally. I will send out an to everyone on our plans. Sunday, August 10 th, is Chapter W monthly meeting. Plans are to leave the Exxon station on Commerce at 1:00 to go to Blytheville, everyone is invited. Chapter D next meeting will be September 7 th, since Labor Day is Sept. 1 st. The 4 th annual Mountain View Motorcycle Rally is Aug There are some that plans on going to that rally. I will send out a notice of the plans. Chapter D Rally will be Sept. 20 th at Craighead Forest, Pavilion 3. We need all members to help in putting on the rally. There is a need for cooks, someone to help with games, and registration. As you visit different merchants check on gift certificates or some product that they would donate to the rally for a door prize. Kathy Hall has a letter of certificate with our number on it for a not for profit organization. Also, get a business card from them and we will put it on our website to let everyone know who has made a donation and it is also advertisement for them. AR-D Director Tommy and Karen Brown

EDUCATORS CORNER It sure is hot out here today. I think I ll go without my helmet, it will be a lot cooler. We have all heard this and many of us have done just that. Cooler is not the best choice. We must stay aware of the fact most fatal accidents are related to head injuries. Our helmet is the most important piece of safety equipment we can get. It is also easy to avoid putting on for short local trips, especially if it is not comfortable. Lets take a few minutes to examine how we should evaluate a helmet for proper fit. Finding the right helmet requires some effort and time. There is also the constraints of your budget. A main point to consider when looking for a helmet is proper fit. Snug-Put helmet on, fasten chin strap, have on your glasses or put on a pair of sunglasses then shake you head. If it moves around, its too big and you have probably been stabbed by your glasses. Your forehead should be firmly against the pads without any extra room. You should have a thumbs worth between your chin and chin bar. Find a chair or seat of some kind and get into the basic riding position, you should have enough vertical opening to allow you to see where you are going, and your peripheral vision (out the corner of your eyes) is required y law to be 100 percent to have DOT approval, based on your riding position. This requirement varies by type of bike. Cruisers, sport bikes, crotch rockets all have different requirements. Now if you like the color an general feel of the helmet this point, wear the helmet or ten minutes or more then take it off and check your face for red marks that should not be there. If your helmet is not comfortable you will be less likely to wear it. Be safe. Protect your most critical element. Bobby and Mitzi Milligan Chapter Educators

GOLD WING ROAD RIDERS ASSOCIATION ARKANSAS Arkansas District Directors Dale & Carolyn Frieden Cowger Lane Phone: Dardanelle, Arkansas Wing Ding is over and it was a very enjoyable trip but we are glad to be back home and settled into our everyday routine again. Of course the highlight of our trip to Wing Ding was to support Ken & Rhonda Holmes during the International Couples Selection. The Arkansas and Region H contingent was loud and provided a lot of support for our favorite 2008 Region Couple. Ken & Rhonda did a great job of representing their chapter, our District and Region as Couple of the year over the past three years. It was a ride they will never forget and we are proud of the way they have represented us. In the end, their dream and ours didn t come to pass, but what a ride it was! As always, everyone who volunteered to work a couple of hours in the Goodie Booth had a great time. We want to again express our appreciation and thanks to those who volunteered. With out volunteers our GWRRA rallies would be doomed to failure. So next someone asks if you can volunteer an hour or two to help say, sure can and enjoy the moment. We are getting close to locking in our District Rally site for 2009 and with any luck you will be reading about it in our next months article. In the meantime start planning to attend as we guarantee it will be an enjoyable Memorial Day weekend. Until next time, ride safe and Ride With Pride. Dale & Carolyn Our Goals Train our members to reduce risk. Improve motorcycling image. To increase motorist awareness Our Motto Friends for Fun, Safety, and Knowledge

BY THE BOOK By: Dale Wingrove Region H Trainer The By The Book articles are intended to help familiarize Volunteer Leaders and GWRRA Members with the guidelines, policies, procedures, and information contained in the GWRRA Officer s Guidebook. Any quotes or references to topics contained in our OGB should not be taken out of context. Please feel free to reprint these articles in Region, District and Chapter newsletters. The GWRRA WAY is found on pages B-3 and B-4 of the OGB. I hope this helps our members to know what the differences are between a Club and GWRRA. HOW GWRRA DIFFERS FROM MOTORCYCLE CLUBS GWRRA is not a motorcycle club. We ve all heard it, haven t we? But just what does it mean? Simply put, it means that our Association and our chapters don t function in the same organizational and procedural format that clubs do. That is, we don t elect anyone to any position by running candidates against each other and having the membership vote on them. We don t choose our officers with popularity contests. We don t impose our wishes on others. We select, not elect. Clubs usually are local in scope. Chapters are national or international and tied to a single organization. We don t have long and heated debates, make motions, second motions, call for votes or go into long, detailed reports in our chapter meetings. We don t need uniforms, people giving us rules to obey, or exorbitant fees or dues. We try not to do any heavy-breathing. In other words, a GWRRA chapter meeting is not presided over by a president and conducted according to Roberts Rules of Order or the parliamentary procedure process. That is the format that many clubs use in their meetings. We don t say that we are better than clubs, we are just different. Some people like the club format of operation. This is all well and good. Those folks should be encouraged to attend and participate where they are the most comfortable. We think when they try it (our format!), they ll like it. The GWRRA chapter format of operation is more flexible than a club format. A GWRRA chapter is not a club, either in its organizational structure or its operational format. It is PART of something bigger than itself. Sometimes, less-informed chapter participants will try to lead the chapter into the club format of operation. It s the responsibility of GWRRA officers to work together to retain the non-political, non-club environment in the chapter. If this becomes a problem, other members of the Operations Team will be able to assist you. AND WHAT A DIFFERENCE IT IS...
