Greetings al-barran, It is with heavy heart that we write our last letter to you as the Coronet of al-barran. The past several months have brought us much thought and consideration as to how we can best serve al-barran, and how we as a Barony have grown over the past 40 years. We look back on the previous Barons and Baronesses of al-barran, each with their own achievements and memories, each with their own way of serving, and we hope that you will think fondly of our time as your advocates, and that our service to you promoted the happiness and well-being of these lands. We look forward to a long and successful tenure for our incoming Baron and Baroness, THL Marc Antoine and Baroness Bianca. These individuals have served this Barony and Kingdom for many years, and the dedication and strength they will provide for al-barran as the Coronet will be nothing short of extraordinary. With your help they will surely lead this Barony to greater deeds and continue to promote the glory of al-barran. Below we have included a list of events that we were privileged to attended as your Baron and Baroness, and the progress for the remainder of our tenure. We were pleased to serve you and this Barony over the past 2 and 1/2 years. It has been an experience that we are not soon to forget, and we hope that you will support and care for the new Coronet of al-barran as you have for us. It has been a wonderful summer in al- Barran, and there is so much news and many thanks to be made. There is no better place to start than with our flagship event, Grand Outlandish. This year, we celebrated al-barran s 40 th Birthday, and Outlandish provided a perfect venue. Master Otto Schwarz Herz put together a truly amazing team and the event was a grand time. My deepest thanks to him and everyone who coordinated, volunteered and worked to make the event such a success. The tables groaned beneath the bounty of the Baron s Feast, we were enchanted by beautiful songs from the Bardic, we laughed to tears by torchlight, we were amazed by feats of valor by all our warriors, and we enjoyed the camaraderie of friends, new and old, from near and far. al-barran could have asked for no better celebration. Nock on Wood was a lovely day of archery and fun. HE Sabiha secured us Oak Flats, which is a stunning site with many trees and was a perfect location for archery. I hadn t been there before, and now I cannot wait to attend another event there! Thank you to Her Excellency for coordinating the event, to all the archers for setting up the ranges and running the shoots, to Countess Slaine inghean Ui Sheanainand her crew for feeding us, and everyone who came out to enjoy the day! We had 70 folks through gate, a rousing success for the event! In addition to our local events, al-barran has been traveling to other groups and enjoying the hospitality of our dear friends. I have heard amazing tales from Coronation, SCA 50 th year, Defender of the 6

Silver Pass and many others. Moreover, I have had the pleasure of watching many of the populace recognized by the Crown. Some of the awards from Outlandish include Lord Killian von Rammstein, the Captain of the Guard, being made a Stag s Blood; THL Johanna Morganstern, our List Officer, was made a Stag of the Outlands; and HE Sabiha al-zarqa al-karak was offered admittance into the Order of the Laurel. These dear individuals are shining examples of the amazing people that call al- Barran home. Looking forward, the Barony is getting ready to head north to Battlemoor. We are working on logistics to send the War Wagon again this year, so keep an eye out for information on that. Also, there is a Google doc to be filled out if you wish to camp with the Barony, so please reach out if you need more information for that. After Battlemoor, we will return home to al-barran Champions. There, in addition to seeing new champions selected, we will witness THL Marc Antoine de la Rue and Baroness Bianca de Vittoria step up to follow Their Excellencies Bardolf and Sabiha as the next Baron and Baroness of al-barran. I am so excited for them and look forward to working with them in their new roles. From the Reeve: Lord Edric Capellarius Greetings to the wonderful Populace of al- Barran! As Gottfried reported in the last newsletter, I have stepped into the position of Reeve at Grand Outlandish XLIII. I would like to acknowledge Sir Gottfried von Zollern for his service to the Barony and for coaching me while I was his Deputy. Thank you! During the quarter, while Gottfried and I were transitioning, Gottfried was able to finalize the reconciliation of al-barran s past events Non Member Registrations ( NMR, formally known as NMS ) and submitted a check to Kingdom. In addition, the Barony received payment from the City of Albuquerque for our support of the 2016 Albuquerque Renaissance Faire in the amount of $2, Thank you to all the volunteers who helped make this year s Ren Faire another success! In addition, fundraisers were held at Grand Outlandish XLIII to bolster the Baronial Travel Fund which raised $ I would like to thank Her Excellency Bronwen Blackwell for the silent auction for a feast with Their Excellencies of al-barran, Mistress Slaine inghean Ui Sheanain & all those who donated baskets for the Basket auction, and Master Otto Schwarz Herz for the Roving Rapier Tourney fundraisers! Huzzah! Since Gottfried stepped down at Grand Outlandish XLIII, I have been acclimating to my new role within the Barony. My first task is to review the financial policy to ensure it is still consistent with SCA and Kingdom Policy. I also have been reviewing 7

the financial documents transferred into my care and working on the quarterly report for Kingdom. Below you will find the second quarter report for al-barran and as you can see, the Barony is in good financial health. This is about 22% below the amount at this time last year which is due to the NMR reconciliation payment stated above, the NMR payment for this year s Grand Outlandish and the full Keep rental payment for Looking ahead, Sir Gottfried has graciously agreed to assist me as my Deputy while I fully transition into my position as Reeve. I look forward to serving the Barony to the best of my ability! 2 nd Quarter Financial Report As of June 30, 2016 General Fund $ 17, Travel Fund Total: $18, From the Chatelaine: Sir Tancred d'avignon Hello mighty al-barran! Several new sewing groups have formed and they are helping newcomers learn how to make garb and grow the fabric arts study for new people. A facebook page was started for the sewing people. Stitchers of al-barran There are 5 armored fighters in different stages of building armor, 2 are almost complete. 2 people have started fencing armor. 9 From the Minister of Arts & Sciences: THL Cerydwen de Gyrlyngton Good greetings to our wonderful Populace. This is a callout to all artisans, young and old, in our Barony. We have the opportunity to put our amazing skills and incredible workmanship in the arts and sciences on display at this year's Battlemoor in Artisan's Row! Our display is scheduled Sunday afternoon from 1:00 pm 3:00 pm. There will be prizes given for Populace's Choice with the possibility of more to come! I have sent an to the coordinators to see if the artisan needs to be present with their item(s) on display. More information will posted on both FaceBook and our listserve as it becomes available. This will be an opportunity to have a good practice run before our upcoming Day of Arts and Sciences later in the year. To enter you will need to submit the following information to me as soon as possible: Name of Artisan Display type (i.e. Calligraphy, Woodworking, etc.) Special requirements, if any I am looking for an Artisan Display Coordinator to help with organization, setup, and teardown of the display during our time slot at Battlemoor. If you are interested, please contact me so we can begin work on this opportunity to showcase our talents! Minister of the Lists: THL Johanna Morganstern Grand Outlandish of 2016, as is expected, had many tournaments and I will describe them in chronological order. Friday, May 27, in the morning was Lord of Outlandish, and we had a long exciting list this year. Listing 34 combatants, it went for nine rounds, and the last few were a rotating group of experienced fighters that had excellent runs early in the tourney, needing a few extra rounds against each other until we finally had the final two. Format was a normal double elimination, best 2 of 3. To add a bit of excitement, byes were destructive. Duke Kynan of Wyre Forest, Sir Sean South, Sir Cosimo Orsini, and Master Béla Bagatur fought it out until only Duke Kynan and Sir Sean remained. Duke Kynan was victorious and became the new Lord of Outlandish. There were three fields for most of the tourney, so there were several people working this tourney: Eorl Mordygan MacGregor, the 9

previous Lord of Outlandish, organized the tourney and helped marshal and herald. Also taking turns as both marshals and heralds, were Sir Gregor von Münchhausen, Lord Killian von Rammstein, Lady Phaidra Thebaia, and Sir Gottfried von Zollern. Card running was critical to keep all the fields running smoothly and thanks go to Lady Cristiane Woayde, Lady Anabel la clergesse, Lady Pipa de Blakemere, and Baroness Vivianna. THL Johanna Morganstern was list minister. Later that afternoon was Outlandish Blade, with 11 rapier fighters. Same format as the earlier heavy tourney, with double elimination and best 2 of 3, also with the destructive byes. The final 6 th and 7 th rounds were a family face-off between Master Estevan de Sepulveda and his son, Don Gaston de Sepulveda, with Don Gaston having the win that day. Tourney Organizer was Master Angus Reid MacFarlane, who also heralded along with Mistress Brigitta Olavsdatter of Kiel. Marshals were Master Jon 'Govanen' Blackwell, Lord Nolan DePaul St. Germaine and Don Michael M'Quilline. Baroness Bronwen Blackwell kept the list. Later that evening was the Templar Torchlight Tourney, although as it was held a bit earlier this year, was more like the Twilight Tourney. Seven brave souls entered a grueling bear-pit tourney and the fundraising took a different form this year. Rather than auctioning each fighter at the beginning, each fighter was out of the tourney after a double elimination and a sponsor could then keep a fighter in the tourney with a $5 per life buyback. No fighter was kept out due to lack of sponsorship. Countess Slaine inghean Ui Sheanain kept the tally. Combat continued until it was called to a close from exhaustion. Lord Seperath de Sepultura was victorious with 23 wins. Tournament organizer was Master Adam Stedefast, list by THL Johanna, marshaling by Viscount Berold de Gilbert, and heralding by Master Angus Reid MacFarlane. Saturday, May 28, was the morning of the Knight Banneret Tournament. Thirteen teams took the field, with the format being a single elimination, best 2 of 3. The byes were nondestructive, but were fought against a team created by the Baron of al-barran or another team of his choice. In the end, Argent Chain, consisting of Sir Titus Modius Varro, THL Stavros of Helicon, THL Decimus Modius Varro, and THL Patroclus Tempestivus, met Vice, consisting of Duke Walrick de Blakeney, THL Marc Antoine de la Rue, Lord Kendrick MacPherson, and Lord Ogadai, with Argent Chain taking the victory. The organizer was Lord Killian, who with Sir Gregor also served as marshal and herald. THL Johanna kept the list. 10

The afternoon Cut and Thrust Tourney fielded 6 fighters, going 6 rounds of double elimination, best 2 of 3. The byes were destructive and fought against Master Angus. The final was between Master Govanen and Don Carlos Nieto de Andrade, with Don Carlos the victor that day. Organizing the tourney were Master Angus and Don Michael who both also marshaled with the help of Lord Nolan DePaul St. Germaine. Master Angus and THL Geoffrey fitz Robert were the heralds and the list was kept by Baroness Bronwen. The evening's entertainment of Rapier Theater was hilarious as usual. This year s theme was Genie in a Bottle. Six fighters took the field. At various times during the fights, a bottle was tossed onto the field, and a fighter could pick up the bottle. An advantage could be opened, but the risk of a disadvantage was also in play. In the end a good gentle named Bogan was victorious. The tourney and fun were organized by Master Govanen and Baroness Bronwen, with Bronwen keeping the list, Master Govanen marshaling, and Don Carlos heralding. Sunday, May 29, for most people a day of rest, but for Grand Outlandish, it's a day dedicated to Speed. The Rapier fighters had the morning with their Speed Tourney. Giving all they had left for the event, they fought two 15 minute blocks with a fiveminute rest between. Don Gaston was on fire, winning with a blowout 33 wins. Master Siegfried Stern was second with 18 wins, and his cadet, Lord Garic Guthraidh, was close behind with 16. Don Carlos was the organizer and marshaled along with Master Govanen and Lord Nolan. THL Elinor dupont heralded and assisted THL Johanna in keeping track of the list. Finally, the afternoon wrung every bit of fight left out of the heavy combatants. The ten fighters in the Speed Tourney fought a demanding forty-five minute stretch, with each bout limited to one minute. The organizer, Lord Killian, kept time, and if the pair did not have a win within a minute, both left the field with a loss. Sir Gregor once again marshaled and THL Johanna kept the list. Master Béla and Sir Cosimo dominated the field, shifting back and forth with the lead. In the end Sir Cosimo was the victor with 41 wins and Master Béla close behind with 36. There was a tie for third with 13 wins, by Lord Thorvald and Danny. It is my understanding, having spoken to His Excellency Tariq, Baron of Citadel of the Southern Pass, that this was Danny's very first tournament. He acquitted himself valiantly. From the Web Minister: THL Marc Antoine de la Rue Hello, al-barran!!! The website for Nock on Wood has been completed. As always, if there are any changes that you would like to see on the website, please let me know. 11

From the Knight Marshal: Sir Gregor von Münchhausen Things are going "sparklingly" well. Fighter practices have had good attendance, with no injuries or incidents to report. From the Scorpion Pursuivant: THL Sáerlaith inghean Robeaird Good things that are happening: I continue to receive at least one new submission every other month. Now that the weather has warmed up I have been getting out to hospitality night in al-barran and fighter practice for heraldic consultation for submissions. Problems that are happening: I am not sure how to get a Southern commentary going, but I'm not sure it's necessary now that Rampart has started virtual meetings for this. I would still like to reach out to the nearby groups and see what I can help them with. From the Rapier Marshal: Master Otto Schwarz Herz The sun is high in the sky and I am reminded that summer is upon us. Which means that we need to take precautions when out in the summer heat. Drink lots of water, even before taking the field. Be sure to apply sunscreen, especially on cloudy days. When in attendance of our Sunday practice, I have been trying to arrive earlier than the regularly posted practice times (11:00 am). I would encourage all to get to the park as early as possible, so as to avoid the mid-day heat. Oh, and don t forget to stretch out after a brief warm-up so we can keep fighting. I would encourage all to attend upcoming local events: Santa Fe Renaissance Faire, al-barran Champions, and Warders of the Western Gates (consult the kingdom calendar for dates and times). Also, there are plenty of other practice opportunities; Tuesday nights is the Summer Rapier Academy (talk to Master Govanen about times and location) and West Side Fighter practices are on Thursday night (Hynes Park at Sara and Hwy 528) 5:45 pm to dark. Grand Outlandish: Words from the Steward Master Otto Schwarz Herz Thank you from the Grand Outlandish XLIII OTTO-crat: First I would like to thank Their Excellencies Bardolf Gundwaldtsson and Sabiha al-zarqa al-karakiyya for allowing me to autocrat such a long-standing and historic event. 12

Special thanks to Countess Gilliana Leigh Gallwey, her family, her father Mr. East, and Duke Kynan of Wyre Forest for use of their land and hours of work that went into the site preparation over the last two years. Cool nights, warm days, and light winds made for an enjoyable event. But we would not have had an event at all if it weren t for a lot of individuals that volunteered massive amounts of their time to make it happen. Here is a partial list of the coordinators: Gate: THL Natal'ia Georgievicha, Lady Ursala die Taube Gatebook/Scheduling: Lady Gerlin von Tiesenhausen Trash: Sir Gregor von Muchhausen A&S: Lord Edric Capellarius Merchants: Baroness Diana of Llanberis Heavy Combat: Lord Killian von Rammstein Rapier Combat: Lord Nolan DePaul St. Germaine, Don Michael M Qulline Land: Lady Asfirdr Riksdottir Site Clean Up: Bjorn Bear Thunarwin Hafla: Lady Sabina le Rouze Baroness Tea: Mistress Melodia Shaw Baron s Feast: Mistress Elisée de Calais Security: Lord (BoBo) Cucuchalain, Torg (Joe) Bardic: Lady Gerlin von Tiesenhausen Siege Cooking: Lady Cassia bint Abdullah Portas: Lord Wildman Archery: Lord James Lupton Children Activities: Lady Raelina Chavira Templar s Torch Light Tourney and Fundraiser: Master Adam Stedefast Basket Silent Auction: Countess Slaine inghean Ui Sheanain 100 Egg Feast: Lady Aurora Del Mar Webminister: THL Marc Antoine de la Rue List Mistress: THL Johanna Morganstern Rapier Theater and Sunday Auction Dinner: Baroness Bronwen Blackwell. her helpers Master Jon Blackwell, and THL Æðeluulf munuc Artwork submission: Lord Garreth Silverthane, art design winner (whose design was printed on the T-shirts) and Her Excellency Bianca de Vittoria (whose art was on the cover of the gatebook). 13

Here are a few individuals that I found to be indispensable: Mistress Elisée de Calais, for her love and devotion, being a sounding board, encourager, editor, house keeper while I was away and giving me enough rope THL Geoffrey fitz Robert for providing me shelter, a couch to nap on, good food (prepared in advance by THL Cerydwen de Gyrlyngton), spreading mulch on the road, hauling people and goods up the mountain and on-call at all hours. Lady Gerlin von Tiesenhausen for putting the gate book and schedule of events together, no small task (not unlike herding cats), chasing down the articles and images, and her gentle nudges to keep me on track. Master Aodh Puirt Lairge for all the endless hours of work in set-up and tear-down along with the early morning meetings and all the help to everyone else that needed it. I am sure that I have missed a lot of folks that helped out their neighbor, a stranger, or newcomer. For that I thank you. Nock on Wood was an outstanding success! We had a full day of archery, food, and fun! I would like to send thanks to several individuals, as without them this great event wouldn t have been possible. THL Rowan, THL Djurig 'Druid' von Aukring, Lord James Lupton, Lord Mikhailo, Lord Llewellyn y Saethydd, and the rest of the archery community, including those members of Drygestan and Nahrun: thank you for spending your day running shoots, marshalling lines, and setting up and tearing down the range. 14

Mistress Ymanya Murray, thank you for spending your entire day greeting everyone and making sure our gate was well taken care of. Sir Slaine inghean Ui Sheanain, Lady Olivia, and Lady Cassidy, lunch was amazing, thank you for feeding the masses. A special thank you also goes to the Baronial Retinue: many of them spent all day on double duty, and their service was above and beyond what we have ever expected. Thank you to everyone who travelled, we had over 6 different groups from the Outlands represented, and we couldn t have been happier to spend the day doing what we love with our friends from afar.
