O RG MAY/JUN 2017 EDITION Volume 15, Issue 3 The RivenSTAR Bimonthly Edition Three Saints & a Sinner: Great People Doing Great Deeds By Katrín Grímsdóttir Despite our great prowess on the battlefield and our skillful hands in the workshop, the Barony of Rivenstar is best known for our unwavering dedication to service. That legacy was set forth by the founders of our group back in 1974 and has been handed down to the next generation. The Society tends to recognize individuals with awards presented by the Kings and Queens of the realm in fancy well attended courts for all to see. Rivenstar hasn t always followed that formula; we re usually too busy cleaning up to attend courts most of the time. So when it comes time to reward our dutiful members, we usually do it off to the side witnessed by a few of our peers. If you missed any of our small ceremonies at this year s Three Saints event, here are a few important honors that were bestowed that day. Master Sigulf Karlnar made Lady Marina da Fiore his apprentice. Maighstir Adhamh MacAoidh made Lord Lucius Antonius Ursus his cadet. And in a small regency court, Jacob MacAndrew received his Award of Arms. Instead of droning on about the rest of our fabulous event, I will let the pictures tell you the tale of Three Saints and a Sinner starting on page 7. The Barony of Rivenstar extends its appreciation and gratitude to all who made this event amazing and memorable. 3 Rivenstar s Baronial Business Meeting Minutes Meeting Minutes for members in attendance Event Reports: Lots of reports from Grand Pageant, Marie got more MIT signatures. Rocky had a successful demo at the Montessori school. The fencers demonstrated fighting styles and the history of combat and chivalry. Announcements and Events: Spring Event (4/22/17) - Pieter will check in with Aurora about the falconry schedule. - There are no scheduled classes or other A&S activities confirmed as of yet besides the Take and Make activities. - We are moving A&S to the basement of the A-Frame with a scheduled break in activities for lunch tavern. The upstairs will be used for foul weather Troll and day camping. - Rocky mentioned that Ollie s (discount store near the mall) has oversized stuffed peeps for sale and it might make an amusing archery target. The prices should drop after Easter. - Pieter asked for more volunteers for specific jobs. We should get more volunteers once the list goes online or the day of the event. - The coins and braids for the site tokens are almost done. - Nicolai will emcee the feast. We discussed more about the skits and entertainment. The Madrigals are singing, there is a country dance routine, and we have a musician who wants to play during the courses. Nicolai will post the sins that are left so we can fill those feast course introduction spots. - We discussed having 8 tables of 8 people (64) plus one head table of 6-8 people for feast. We don t anticipate selling out for feast. Katrin will have the table numbers and the feast sign-up sheet. - We discussed bad weather contingencies, ropes for the fields, and stanchions. - We will have the Girl s Dorm tent for use for the fencing and heavy marshals. - Rocky asked Pieter to check with Ross camp to see if the stove is working and how many outlets are available. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Meeting Minutes for members in attendance Event Reports: Marie and Will went to an archery event. Will won the Invading Army Shoot. Marie got more MIT signatures and got her Youth authorization. She also got high enough scores to get into the Merry Band, a royal sponsored archery challenge. Officer Reports: Chatelaine Please fill out the survey Rocky posted on Facebook as it is the part of the March/April competition. She is submitting her officer s report. Rocky will be at this coming Wednesday Fighter practice with the loaner garb. Exchequer Coise issued a check for seed money for the cash box. Brianna will take it to the bank. Chronicler Katrin published the Mar/Apr edition of the newsletter and sent it out to the list. Announcements and Events: Madrigal practice has ended for the semester. They will resume the first week of fall semester. Spring Event (4/22/17) - Pieter verified the updates to the schedule. Katrin will make changes and update Ursus. - Katrin will bring the schedule and map poster boards, feast sign-up sheet, table cards, one easel, and any other signs she has. Pieter will bring the other easel. - Pieter and Wilhelm will work on making and laminating new signs including some new loading and no parking signs. The rest of the signs are with the feast gear at Dani s house. - We have a room upstairs for a ladies changing room. - We will place markers on the parking area Friday night. On Saturday morning, staff is encouraged to park at the ends of the markers to help participants know where to park. - Troll will be in the A-Frame. If the weather is good, day camping should be setup outside. - Brianna volunteered to create a new phone list this year. - Malie reminded everyone to bring sunscreen. - Gallien volunteered to be a water bearer for the fighters. - Friday night set up begins at for setup, tent erection, and feast preparation. - Pieter asked for volunteers for loading the tents and other equipment into his truck Thursday night. - Takaya is making a list of items we need from Dani s house. We won t need all of the dishes. - We still need a few more feast servers. Their tickets are half price $ We confirmed that no animals are allowed in the buildings beyond service animals, but people may have animals outside in free standing kennels. No building of corrals allowed on site. - Brianna texted Arrantxa and Aurora to clarify how the feast tokens are being made. If the cards and the menu booklet are separate, then we will hand out cards at troll as tokens and set up the booklets on the feast tables. Jacob and Wulf will be posting the SCA road signs this year. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Meeting Minutes for members in attendance Officer Reports: Exchequer We will soon be able to take payments online Page 3

4 Rivenstar s Baronial Business Meeting Minutes through Paypal. Coise attended an exchequer training webinar about the new system and hopes to take another training live session soon. Spring Event Reports: - We had great weather for this year s Three Saints spring event. - Parking was much better this year with the marked starters for the rows. - Jacob received his Award of Arms during a short baronial court as the lists were closing. - We could have used another changing room for men. We had lots of inquiries at troll. We discussed renting the camp counselor s room as it has another bathroom. - Pieter will post lost and found on the Facebook page. - Coise received receipts and wrote reimbursement checks. - Site numbers: 143 adults registered at troll, 25 were nonmembers The range was well attended considering there was an archery event happening the same weekend. Marie is now an archery marshal. The new archery nets seemed to work well. The archery butts are back at for practices. Fencing & Heavy Briana is now a rapier marshal. There was a greater turn out for fencing than for heavy, so next year, if we use Ross Camp, we should consider allocating more equitable space for fencing. We didn t rope off the fighting areas, but people, for the most part, seemed to respect the stanchions that marked off the area. Pieter received several compliments on how the fighting ran. He made sure to let people know that Moira was in charge of all things fencing. Lunch Tavern Lunch went well. Rocky thanked all of the archers and students for their help in the kitchen. The tavern took in $ Minus expenses, we raised $ for our baronial archery program. We fed 80 people plus 10 kitchen helpers. The stove was filthy when we started, but we got it cleaned. Our staff left the room cleaner than how we found it. Falconry The demo had a great turnout and helped lots of folks find the feast hall. The falconers had a great time and are willing to come back next year. They sent us a thank you note. A&S The A&S area and set up worked out great on the first floor. It wasn t too loud for troll. Master Cellach s class was placed in the center of the other A&S activities so people could come and go as they pleased. People enjoyed the games and book displays. Feast Hall The feast entertainment was a big hit. We thanked Nicolai for being MC and organizing all of the talent. - Katrin and Nicolai worked together to best optimize the feast hall table set up for server access and setting an appropriate stage for entertainment. We had lots of help setting up and tearing down the tables and chairs. Katrin took a picture Friday night of how the hall was set up so we could leave it the same way as per the Ross Camp contract. - There was some confusion about who was in charge of the servers and who was serving feast, but people stepped in and Sigulf took over as head server. - Coise does not have a feast count just yet. - The food was excellent. We thanked the many helpers that helped put the feast together as well as cleaned up afterward. We also left the kitchen and feast hall cleaner than when we found it. - It was pointed out that the rocks were not a great idea for use on those tables, but people had fun trying to break the nuts. - People especially loved the disposable dishes and selfserve drink coolers. We see more sloth events in our future if we use this site again for feast since it does not have a dishwasher. - There was an issue with a moldy cooler, so we need to make sure the equipment is clean and dry before we pack it away in storage. - We will need to schedule an annual inventory. - The kitchen staff is making a list of what they need for next year. People bring a lot of personal equipment to cook with and it can be challenging to keep track of personal items. - We also discussed the need for more people to start taking on leadership roles such as feastocrat and autocrat. Takaya has significantly helped with feast in some way for over 40 years. We need to start passing on the mantle and train new recruits. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Meeting Minutes for members in attendance SCA Related and Event Reports: Lots of people helped Dani move boxes including the baronial feast equipment to a storage facility on Saturday. A&S Projects of Note: Marie made a leather quiver. Katrin finished sewing a Viking apron and an underdress. Officer Reports: Exchequer Now that all the receipts are in, Coise will have the event report ready for us next week. We had four people at Sunday s practice. Marie has one more test to complete before she is an official archery marshal. Baron The Baronial report is due next week. Upcoming Events and Announcements: s begin May 10th Page 4

5 Rivenstar s Baronial Business Meeting Minutes May Mosey ( ) - Marie will not be available to check us in at 4:30 pm at the Mosey coordinator booth. Katrin will ask Jacob if he can do it as she works until. - There is a major fencing event conflict that weekend, so many of the regular helpers will be unavailable. There should still be sufficient help. Katrin will send out a reminder post on Facebook. - Adhamh and Malie will not be there, so they will bring the popup tent to the fighter practice before the Mosey. Wilhelm will bring a table. People will need to bring their own chairs. - We still have half a box of book markers from last year to hand out. PENNSIC - We discussed the registration date deadlines and how to register online. - When you register on the website, the group camping name is listed simply as Rivenstar and NOT Barony of Rivenstar. The website is penn46/ August Mosey aka the PENNSIC Mosey Since more people are going to PENNSIC this year than last year, we may need to discuss the possibility of cancelling our spot in the August Mosey. We tabled the discussion for later. Bardic Madness - There was some chatter on Facebook about Rivenstar hosting a Bardic Madness this November. - Catriona volunteered to Autocrat, but she was unable to attend the meeting. - We discussed what was posted online including using the Lutheran Church we held our last Christmas court at. It s a dry site, so we might need a post revel site such as someone s house. - We need to know what date the church is available. We should avoid any Purdue home football game weekends as we think the church sells their parking spaces for the game. - The Bardic Madness website has its own list of what dates not to choose. Here is the direct link: sites.google.com/site/bardicmadnessmid/event-bid - Will we need to charge a site fee if the church is free to use? What about the nonmember surcharge? - We would still need to submit a bid for the event. - We will need a Pale ad. - We will need detailed instructions to get to the site since construction on campus changes weekly. - Ross Camp is not available in November, so Brianna is checking her list of event sites as a backup if the church is not available. - Katrin offered planning assistance, but it would be ideal to have an experienced autocrat helping both Catriona and Katrin as neither have been an autocrat before. (Maybe a laurel? Hint Hint) - There was some reservation about having an autocrat that cannot attend the business meetings. Malie is communicating with Catriona to get more information. Website Updates - Adhamh brought up a proposal from Ursus, our Webminister. Ursus would like to add a carpool page to our website. It would look similar to the one that Wurm Wald has on their page where people can offer free seats and arrange rides on the website. Here is the direct link: wurmwald.pbworks.com/w/page/ /events% 20Calendar%20and%20Rideshare%20Board - It would also give us a heads up as to who is going where, so we can fill in the event dates portion of the award recommendations webpage. - There was unanimous approval for Ursus to proceed. Award Backlogs There seems to be a large backlog of awards. To help get these awards out to people, Their Majesties have asked the Barons and Baronesses of the Middle Kingdom to hold more frequent Regency courts. Adhamh and Malie may need to hold regency courts for some of the non-baronial groups. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Meeting Minutes for members in attendance SCA Related and Event Reports: Adhamh and Malie attended about 5.5 hours of court this weekend. Malie delivered Brianna s Kumihimo braids to Their Majesties. Officer Reports: Exchequer Coise is working on the April financial report. We had three people at Sunday s practice. They shot three different Royal Rounds and played Golf Par Three. Practices, in fair weather, will be at at 1:00 pm on Sundays. - Nan offered to have Thursday practices at again. This will conflict with the Thursday project night, so we will see what interest there is for an additional archery practice. - Marie is now the new Baronial Marshal officer as Wilhelm has stepped down. Seneschal Her report is due next week. Upcoming Events and Announcements: s begin this week May 10th May Mosey ( ) This Saturday! - Jacob and Marie will be able to check in at the volunteer table at 4:30 pm. - Katrin double checked who is bringing what items, including who has any banners to hang as tent walls. - Adhamh will bring the tent to fighter practice for Jacob. - Coise requested an informational sent to the Rivenlist for those who do not use Facebook. Katrin will send an and update the Facebook event page. Page 5

6 Rivenstar s Baronial Business Meeting Minutes Arrows Request Marie asked if the archers could use the money we got from the Tavern fundraiser to purchase new loaner arrows. Wil plans to make the arrows, he just needs to purchase the materials for two dozen arrows. Estimated cost is $ We voted yes. Wil needs to save his receipts and submit them to Coise when he is ready. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Meeting Minutes for SCA Related and Event Reports: - Pieter attended Constellation Academy of Defense and taught a class. - Takaya attended Sternfeld s equestrian practice last Sun. Officer Reports: Exchequer The April exchequer report was submitted. Practice went well, we had three people shoot for IKAC, Royal Rounds, Period Royal Rounds, and SSAC golf par 3. (See archery marshal for detailed descriptions of the games.) - When the arrow parts come in, we will hold an arrow building class. Date and location: TBA. Baron The Baronial report has been submitted. Upcoming Events and Announcements: May Mosey Report - We had great weather and a good turnout. - Katrin will request that we are moved to a different spot for next month. The loud music and the vapor vendor next to us made it difficult to talk to people. - Adam and Malie s tent was 12x12. The Mosey rules state we need a 10x10, so we will need a different tent for the rest of the summer. - We need to add grommets to the bottom of the banners to make it easier for tying and hanging. Bardic Madness - The location may need to change because the church we used for Christmas Court sells their parking spaces during game weekends. - The Bardic Madness staff handles the classes and the schedule. - We provide lunch tavern feast, and troll. It s basically a regular event but without fighting. - We need to let the BM staff know that the church may not be available. - We are looking at the second week in November. - We are looking into Cary Camp, Covenant Presbyterian, and Saint Andrews United Methodist. - Congress Street Church must have a member of the SCA that s a member there and willing to sponsor us. - There s the possibility of using a hotel. We would need to reserve a block of rooms and could use the hotel as the site, but we would not be able to have a feast. - Catrina will be at Lorelei s house on Tuesday and will get more details. Notes taken by Marie the Archer, transcribed by Katrin Grimsdottir ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Meeting Minutes for members in attendance Officer Reports: Exchequer Coise needs to sit with the Regional Exchequer to go over our books. This is an audit that happens every 3 or so years. The archery report is due next week. Upcoming Events and Announcements: June Mosey (6-3-17) - Katrin contacted the Mosey coordinator and requested that we move our tent away from the big band stage and the e cigarette vapor vendors. Between screaming over the music and coughing from the irritants from the vapor vendor, it wasn t a great situation. The coordinator is thinking of moving us to 10th and main in front of the gaming store. - We will ask Ursus if we can borrow his 10x10 tent for next Mosey. - Marie wants to do a fundraiser to raise money for the archery group. We are allowed to do fundraising at our booth as long as we let the Mosey folks know ahead of time what we are selling. We agreed to do a bake sale to see how it goes. PENNSIC Make sure you register before the deadline which is rapidly approaching! New Practice - The archery group has moved the Thursday evening practices to Tuesday evenings at. Practices will be held on Tuesdays at and Sundays at 1:00 pm. - The Sunday practices will be held rain or shine. Foul weather practices will move to Arrows III. - If there is bad weather on a Tuesday night, the practice will just be cancelled. Bardic Madness - We ve narrowed the date down to Nov 18th. All of the other dates conflict with Crown, Crystal Ball, and Thanksgiving. - We definitely do NOT want to merge Bardic Madness with Christmas Court. - If Nov 18th is a football weekend, we need an alternative site off campus. - Catriona is looking into other site options and possibly working with other local groups to host Bardic Madness. Notes taken by Katrin Grimsdottir except where noted Page 6

11 Lust Envy Three Saints: A Sinful Feast This year s feast had a special seven deadly sins theme. Duke Moonwulf started us off, begrudgingly, with sloth by explaining the feast. He gave up halfway through to go back to bed. Most of the feast had been designed around sloth including a Get Your Own Drink station and giving people rocks so they could crack their own darn nuts. The Rivenstar Madrigals entertained us with good humor and lusty songs of old. The dancers made us green with envy as they flaunted their skills on the dance floor. Blake started to introduce the next course, but he was slain by Geo in a wrathful rage. Gallien, the Pride of Rivenstar, showed off his endowments...of the arts. Nicolai introduced the gluttony course, but by then, no one could lift their cameras. Finally, as the prized Russian Cream appeared, an overzealous Katrin stole every one of the bowls for herself. Luckily, she was so over come with avarice, she didn t notice the bowls had been stolen back and delivered to their proper tables. Wrath Pride Sloth All photos on this page submitted by John Skinner.
