5 Words from Their Excellency s Hail and Well Met! Estrella War is rapidly approaching! We are excited about Our first Estrella War with the coronets. What a busy month January was! On Jan 5 th, We attended 12 th night, A Midwinter s Night s Dream. What a lovely time! We were very proud that members of Our barony hosted this amazing Kingdom event. Master Ra id and his wonderful crew definitely raised the bar for whoever hosts this event in On Jan 6 th, We had the privilege of going to The Heroes of The Silent Angels Archery Shoot. The number of attendees was wonderful. We cannot say enough about the incredible archery community. They pulled out all the stops to raise funds for such an important cause. On Jan 12 th, Her Excellency traversed to The Shire of Burning Sands to enjoy their annual calendar event, Sunshine, Sand & Swords. Such hospitality, food and fighting! She would like to personally thank Posanitza Dascha, Lady Aischine, Cameron and Pavel for making the long drive so pleasant. On Jan 19 th, The 4 th Heroes of The Silent Angels event came and went. This particular event is very near and dear to Our hearts. Once again, the outpouring of generosity from Our chosen family was fantastic! The fighting was fierce and honorable. The donations for the silent auction were phenomenal. Her Excellency thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to assist Sir Sly with the helm auction. We look forward every year to this heartwarming event. On Jan 20 th, Our barony hosted a Kingdom War Practice at our ancestrial Encanto Park. The weather could not have been more perfect. The fighting was outstanding and the soup kitchen headed by Bannthegn Lisabetta went above and beyond with nine varieties of some of the tastiest soup in the known world. On Jan 27 th, We travelled South to The Barony of Tir Ysgthr Kingdom War Practice. His Excellency was very pleased with the fighting. Thank you to all of the populace members of The Barony of Atenveldt that were able to travel and support the efforts of Our cousins to promote fighting practice before war. We would like to personally thank Lady Kirsten for her beautiful maintenance work on the larger coronets. They are lovely. 9 Vigil Announcement's Oyez! Oyez! My Lords and Ladies pray attend. It is the pleasure of Her Excellency Helen Jennet of Foxhall, Mistress of both the Laurel and the Pelican to invite one and all to attend the vigil of her pupil Lord Kedivor Tal mab Cadwgan. Join House Foxhall at Estrella War, at 8 p.m. on Saturday night following Grand Court. Light refreshments will be provided by the household for gentles wishing to visit Lord Kedivor while he contemplates Their Royal Majesties offer to join the noble Order of the Pelican. Foxhall will be camped beside the Barony of Atenveldt. That same evening, Their Excellencies Seelos and Elena will be hosting a bardic performance in the Baronial encampment. Light refreshments, bardic performances, Lord Kedivor s vigil, all at Estrella war? Who could ask for more? We look forward to seeing everyone there. In service, House Foxhall Lord Duncan Bane fuar Bhathais has been asked by Their Aten Majesties, Tristan and Damiana to contemplate elevation into the Order of Chivalry. The vigil will begin around 8 PM Thursday evening and will continue until sunrise. All are welcome to come and speak with Duncan as he contemplates Knighthood. 10 BARONY OF ATENVELDT PRESENTS CUT & THRUST Sunday, March 17, 2013 ISLAND OF GOTLAND ~ 1398 God s friends and the whole world s enemies, the famous battle cry of the powerful pirate band known as the VITALIAN BROTHERHOOD, can be heard in the harbors and cities along the coasts of the Baltic Sea. Once, simple privateers hired by the Dukes of Mecklenburg to fight against Denmark, they engaged in war at sea and shipped food to the city of Stockholm to keep her supplied. Soon after however, the brotherhood turned to open piracy and coastal plunder. Now, at the peak of power, having conquered the Island of Gotland and establishing their headquarters in Visby, their incessant raiding of everyone s shipping has caused maritime trade in the Baltic Sea to utterly collapse. At last, Queen Margaret of Denmark and King Albert of Sweden have conceded Gotland to the allied TEUTONIC ORDER as a pledge,(similar to a fiefdom), with the understanding that the Knights would exterminate the pirating Vitalian Brothers from their strategic island stronghold and deliver the known world from these menacing marauders and so the mayhem begins! Can history be re written? Come one, come all ~ witness the thrilling rapier battles of the notorious Vitalian Brotherhood, as they desperately defend their territory against the invading Teutonic Knights! There will be a GRAND PRIZE to the victor! The last standing fighter, be he or she Brotherhood or Teutonic Knight! Picnic Pot Luck ~ The Barony will provide fried & baked chicken. This award is open to any unit from any kingdom (hardsuit, rapier, thrown weapons, combat archers) The prize is a spectacular banner made by Sir Valora tou Ayiva of Atenveldt for you to display at will. 13 Competition Categories Machines An apparatus consisting of interrelated parts with separate functions, used in the performance of some kind of work. A machine documented to pre 17th Century Western Europe that is fully functioning, standalone and does not need additional items for assistance. Entries may be of any working scale and will need to be demonstrated at the Competition; detailed diagrams and list of parts will need to be included in Documentation. Time needed to demonstrate will need to be included in pre-registration description. Pickling/Preserving An item of food available in pre-17th century Western Europe that has been pickled or preserved through the process of fermenting used in the same time frame. The food and the pickling/preserving process will need to be kept within the same time frame and regional area for each entry. All entries will include a list of ingredients and presented in a ready to be sampled format. Working Class Clothing Clothing worn on a daily basis as a means of earning one s livelihood, including a minimum of 3 pieces of clothing that would be worn simultaneously by a person of the lower classes of pre 17th Century Western Europe. Layers should be worn together as an ensemble, not including headwear/footwear or accompanying accessories. Documentation should also include a brief description of the types of work that could have been performed in this outfit. Youth A&S Competition - New this Year Youth from years of age can put one entry into the competition. Full details are on the Atenveldt A&S website and in the Xtra. You are more than welcome to offer your class and/or a different subject matter class on multiple days. We also encourage field trips, as an example Dutch oven cooking could be held in the instructor s encampment. 14 All About Collegium Each year at Estrella war, a collegium of classes is offered for the populace. Classes are open to any attendees at the Estrella war, vary in length, and are scheduled from Wednesday, February 27, 2013 through March 2, Classes begin daily, from 9 AM. The final classes of the day end by 6 PM. Classes are generally free, unless a material fee is requested in the class description by the instructor. Some classes may have a class limit for the number of students and/or an age limit for attendees. Class schedules and sign-up sheets will be available at the Collegium. Registration for classes begin at 8 AM Wednesday through Saturday, and are filled on a first come first served bases. Should a class be filled that you wished to attended, you can place your name on a standby list. Should there be a cancellation or no show; the class will be filled from the stand by list. NEW IN 2013!! We are hoping to have classes arranged into Colleges of related arts and sciences. This will allow you to quickly find the date and time a class is offered in your area of interest; for example; you like period cooking. So you look in the sign up book for the College of Culinary Arts and it will list all of the classes, by date and time, throughout the war that are being offered in food/cooking. The Colleges are; The College of War; arms and amour, war machines, historical combat strategies, bowery/fletching, etc. The College of Culinary Arts: food, recipes, feast. catering The College of Clothing; Historical clothing, footwear and accessories The College of Sciences: herbalism, alchemy, astromony, navigation, mathematics The College of Manuscript Arts; parchment/paper making, inks, calligraphy and illuminations, book binding, cartography. The College of Performing arts; music, spoken, dance, puppetry,juggling, magic etc. The College of Textile arts: weaving, spinning, embroidery etc. The College of the trades; woodworking, soap making, leather working. Brewing, metal work, ceramics, glass making, etc. College of Heraldry: vocal heraldry, court procedures, awards, heraldic display, armorial research Elective Classes; which is every other art or sciences that is not represented by a college. There will also be a student lounge where a student may continue to work on a project or await another class to begin. Mixed Weapons War & Seminar March 29-31,2013 Barony of SunDragon Now that Estrella War XXIX is over let us regroup, repair and rebuild our warriors. The Barony of SunDragon will host three days of group and individual tournaments in as many styles as we can muster including equestrian. Seminars will be scheduled to cover many aspects of war including building, maintaining and repairing armor. Location: Bumble Bee Ranch, Bumble Bee, Arizona Adult members: $14 if camping all weekend, $8 for day trip Youth (ages 16 and 17) members: $9 if camping, $6 for day trip Non-member adult: additional $5 Children (ages 15 and younger): free The parking fee is the same as last year: $7 per vehicle for camping, $5 per vehicle for a day trip. Parking must be paid with cash. Just like last year, each adult must sign the Ranch waiver, whether camping or day tripping. 15 Crown Tournament February 16, 2013 Shire of Burning Sands War draws nigh and the days are shorter, the Weather King reigns, but soon Summer Is Coming. Time has come for the next King and Queen of these Glorious Lands of Atenveldt to be decided. The Winter Crown Tournament will be held at the Shire of Burning Sands. We here at the Shire would like to invite the populace of Atenveldt to come and see this largely unknown part of the Kingdom. Crown tournament will be held on Saturday with the Warlord tournament the following day, Sunday Feb 17th. The location is Palmcroft Elementry School, 901 W Palmcroft Drive, Yuma, AZ Site Fees: Adult members: $8.00; Youth: Free; $5.00 Non-member surcharge Site will open at 9 am to 6 pm both days. This is a dry site with no smoking. Only service animals are allowed. Staking is allowed, there is limited parking on site but unloading is allowed with plenty of parking across the street at the mall. A block of 50 rooms has been reserved $84 for a double if booked before Jan 17. That includes a hot continental breakfast. Please use code SCA when making reservations. Fairfield Inn Marriott 1801 S Sunridge Drive, Yuma, AZ The best way to get to site is to take the 16th Street Exit off Highway 8 take a left at the top of the ramp. Continue through four lights and tuning left at the fifth which is 4th Ave. Continue through another three lights and turn right at the fourth light, Catalina Drive. At the stop sign you will see the school across the street with the mall parking to your left. Continue across the street to the opening for unloading on the left. Great Helm Tournament March 23-24, 2013 Barony of Tir Ysgithr Greetings to all! It is time once again to gather in The Gem of Atenveldt, Tir Ysgithr for Great Helm! Join us to see who our new Baronial guard will be! Saturday the 23rd will be the Great Helm Tournament and Youth Champion Tournament. Sunday the 24th will be the guardsmen tournament and rapier captain tournament. Saturday, we will have a grilled chicken lunch prepared by Mistress Thyri covered by site cost. We will also have a potluck for sides so please bring a dish to share! There will also be a silent auction to benefit BTY s archery community to cover the cost of items lost from a break-in to their trailer. We will also have an artisans display so please bring out your amazing crafts to share! Sunday we will be holding the Bard of the Boar competition! Be prepared to sing or tell a story for Their Excellencies! Sign up after opening court Sunday. The competition will be held throughout the day under the Pyg. Come and let your voice be heard! The site is Himmel Park, located at 1035 N. Treat Avenue, Tucson, AZ. Parking is available in the parking lots and at the curbside. Site opens at 9:00 A.M. and closes at 5:00 P.M. both days. Opening court for both days will be at 10:30 A.M., with closing court each afternoon following the end of the day s tournaments and fighting. 16 Greetings Unto the Known World from ThorvaldR and Tofa of Drachenwald, After our Coronation in January, We shall be proceeding to the Great Gulf War in March of this year and will be raising our Banners and Meadhall! We are looking to share not only the recipes and methods of old, but also the delicious results!
