2 Director s Chair October 2014 The 2014 Quad Meet is now history and once again the Illinois Region did itself proud by hosting a first class event. Mark and Val Maron promised, organized, and hosted a complete day s outing for more than 100 registrants. Model As traveled from all over Illinois, Southern Wisconsin, and even Iowa. The weather was absolutely perfect. Registrants received a huge goody bag, barbequed lunch, desert, beverages, and chances for a door prize. The field was full of beautiful A s that even attracted passerby to come and view them. A special treat for those interested was an escorted trip to a secured location on the Cantigny grounds to view the restoration shop. Our guide thoroughly described restorations currently in the shop which included a WWI troop carrier undergoing a frame up restoration, several jeeps, a half-track, motorcycle, and various other vehicles were included. Especially interesting was a Higgins LCVP or landing craft from Omaha Beach on D Day. Totally restored, and only a few left in existence, we were amazed to find out that this craft was made by Chris- Craft and is actually a wood hull boat. An unscheduled surprise during the tour was fascinating commentary by our own Illinois Region member Joe Pasalaqua who was there in June, 1944 on the second wave landing at Normandy. The numerous Model A members from the many clubs represented and even our tour guide were all fascinated by Joe s accounts. We all salute you Joe Pasalaqua for your patriotic service! September and October are busy months with activities at Model A Day at Gilmore Michigan on September 20-21, the Newport Indiana Hill Climb on October 4-5, and of course Hershey PA on October Hope to see you out enjoying our wonderful hobby. Joe died 25 years ago. Mary kept the car and stayed active and she has been in a retirement community in Plainfield. Her son Eddy has a microbrewery in Lemont. 4 Illinois Region Upcoming Events: Her Little Bit of History From 1910 The year is 1910, over one hundred years ago. What a difference a century makes! Here are some statistics for the Year 1910 (applies to the USA): The average life expectancy for men was 47 years. Fuel for this car was sold in drug stores only. Only 14 percent of the homes had a bath tub. Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone. There were only 8,000 cars and only 144 miles of paved roads. The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph. The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower. The average US wage in 1910 was 22 cents per hour. The average US worker made between $200 and $400 per year. A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year, a dentist $2,500 per year, a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year. More than 95 percent of all births took place at HOME. Ninety percent of all Doctors had NO COLLEGE EDUCATION! Instead, they attended so-called medical schools, Many of which were condemned in the press & the government as substandard. Sugar cost four cents a pound. Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen. Coffee was fifteen cents a pound. Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used Borax or egg yolks for shampoo. There was no such thing as under arm deodorant or tooth paste. Canada passed a law that prohibited poor people from entering into their country for any reason. The five leading causes of death were: Pneumonia 1, influenza 2, Tuberculosis3, Diarrhea 4, & Heart disease 5. The American flag had 45 stars. The population of Las Vegas Nevada was only 30. Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and iced tea hadn't been invented yet. There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day. Two out of every 10 adults couldn't read or write and only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school. Eighteen percent of households had at least one full-time servant or domestic help. Try to imagine the next 100 years.

9 Fashion In The Model A Era ( ) Invented in 1920 s this could be world s first navigation system. No satellites or digital screens were used in the making of this portable navigation system. Called Plus Fours Routefinder, this little invention was designed to be worn on your wrist, and the maps were printed on little wooden rollers which you would turn manually as you drove along. The device was intended to allow drivers to navigate around the UK, but with so few cars on the roads it never really took off. Now consigned to the scrap heap of history, the Routefinder is one of many gadgets patented by inventors who were hoping to strike it rich with their bizarre contraptions. It s part of a collection of weird and wonderful inventions, all conceived between 1851 and 1951, which have gone on display at the British Library in London. This information is courtesy of

Youth Advisor Amy Rozny Hello fellow Model A-ers! The weekend of September 20th, I had the opportunity to spend it in Hickory Corners, Michigan for Model A Day at Gilmore. It is a beautiful property with many collections of antique automobiles, but what stood out most was the beautiful MAFFI Model A Museum. It was a weekend I enjoyed very much and I won't forget. It was nice to see friends from near and far and Model A's I grew up with as a part of this learning experience. Everyone with an interest in automobiles and history should take the time to visit the Gilmore Car Museum, you won t be disappointed. Have A great day! Amy
