3 DIRECTORS COLUMN As I start preparing my column from beautiful Arizona where the temperature is expected to reach 71 today I am thinking about our trip home next week. Brrrrr. The winter board meeting of the Club and the CLCMRC was a little exciting as I had not planned to attend but conference in by phone. However the Presidents of both boards twisted my arm to attend so I could give my presentation to the two boards in person. So at the last moment I got a ticket to Denver. I arrived in the afternoon at 2:30 and the meeting was supposed to start at 3:00 but was postpone until 4:00. The president of the board and a gentlemen in charge of coordinating the building project had asked me to prepare a Construction Feasibility Study assuming that if we wait until spring to sign a deal we might be facing a 4% inflation factor and on a total projected cost of $1,085,000 this would amount to a cost increase of $43,400 and it was also a possibility that if we wait until next year to start we might be facing another 4-6% increase. My report assumed that we would be able to borrow money at 4% over 6 years. Comparing the interest expense to the 4% inflation factor indicated that we would have a saving of a little over $18,000 by borrowing the money. As you would imagine there was much discussion and then a vote. It was unanimous to proceed. After this vote there were three more items passed: 1- To firm up the final drawings with the architect 2-To firm up construction cost and 3-Start the process to secure borrowing from either a bank or individual members. If this is completed in the near future we hope to start construction in early spring and have the construction completed by September.

4 We will be encouraging those who have given to consider increasing their amount and those who have not given we will be encouraging them to reconsider. It should be noted that for 2013 the tax bill passed by Congress reinstated the procedure where if you are required to take a distribution from your retirement fund you my make a direct transfer from your retirement account to charity and you will not have to pick that amount up in income. For those individual who do not itemize their deductions this is a good deal. For example if you are in the 25% bracket for Federal this means you can make a $1,000 contribution. On Saturday the club meeting started. I attended and presented the financials as Larry Lesiger was not present. After that the Regional V-Ps presented their reports followed by the Office report and the Editor of the Self-Starter. Later there was discussion about getting the Self-Starter on line at a reduced rate if you do not need the paper copy. Have you purchased your CLCMRC calendar. They are only $15. Go to the club web site to order. While there you can see all the new items that are offered in the Store. I took this picture at the 2001 Grand National in Denver. See what you miss when you do not go to the GN See you down the road, Jim Pitman

8 Some Interesting Facts The year is 1910 one hundred and two years ago. What a difference a century makes! Here are some statistics for the Year 1910: ************************************************************************************************************ The average life expectancy for men was 47 years. Fuel for this car was sold in drug stores only. Only 14 percent of the homes had a bathtub. Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone. There were only 8,000 cars and only 144 miles of paved roads. The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph. The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower! The average US wage in 1910 was 22 cents per hour. The average US worker made between $200 and $400 per year. A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year, A dentist $2,500 per year, a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year. More than 95 percent of all births took place at HOME. Ninety percent of all Doctors had NO COLLEGE EDUCATION! Instead, they attended so-called medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press AND the government as 'substandard.' Sugar cost four cents a pound. Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen. Coffee was fifteen cents a pound.

9 Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used Borax or egg yolks for shampoo. Canada passed a law that prohibited poor people from entering into their country for any reason. The Five leading causes of death were: 1. Pneumonia and influenza 2. Tuberculosis 3. Diarrhea 4. Heart disease 5. Stroke The American flag had 45 stars.
