The summer season is upon us, with all the events, and the heat that goes with them. We are looking forward to our show on July 19 with our partner in the effort, the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley. This will be our fifth partnership, and looks like it will be another successful event. The museum has some construction going on at this time, so we will be on a double show field, which will not make things more difficult and will add a bit of variety to the show. The flyers have gone out, and Angie is waiting for the returns, so go ahead, fill yours out and get them to her. We would like to see a record number of participants this year! Our board meeting was held on June 19 and several important topics were discussed there. Bob Engle requested, and was approved, to hold a fun run to the Gravel Springs Annual Picnic in Star Tannery on August 9. He has set up a reserved parking area for our cars, as well as offering his home grounds for additional parking. A chicken and ham dinner will be offered at 4:00, as well as burgers, hotdogs, and such available all day. This event has been placed on our calendar, and should be a great event, so let s all plan to show up. More information will be offered at our next meeting(s). Mark Dinsmore brought us up to date on the Edinburg Olde Time days event on September 20 and 21. He has met with the show coordinators and things are in order for the show. Our club will be running the car show, so volunteers will be greatly appreciated to help with parking, etc. There is a parade on Saturday, in which we are all invited to participate, if you wish, not mandatory. Food, music, and displays are all in the works for the show. Several of our members have attended the show in the past and say that it is really a fun day! Jim Tillery discussed the Poor Man s Tour, on September 27 and 28. The Stonewall Jackson hotel in Staunton has blocked 20 rooms for us, so you need to make your reservations fairly soon. The phone number there is , and ask for the Shenandoah Region rate. Jim has put a lot of work into this tour, so it behooves us to show our appreciation and make the short trip. It doesn t require your old car to make the trip, but if you do drive it, it is certainly a bonus!! Your president and vice president attended the Gettysburg Region s show on June 14 to see how another region does their show. I was impressed by the number of volunteers who were helping run the meet. It was held at the Latimore Valley fairgrounds, which is also the site of the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing. The museum was open during the show and provided a bit of relief from spending the day sitting by your cars. Club members were also running the kitchen on the grounds and had a real assembly line going, to the point that there was never more than one or two in line waiting for their vittles. (Continued on page 3.)

July Meetings Our July membership meeting will be held on July 3 at the Club Shelter in the park at 7 p.m. Hosts for the evening are Chris and Fuzzy. 3 VOLUME 27 NO. 7 THE SPLIT RIM PAGE 3 Members successful at Sully Plantation Show Remember the next club show on July 19 at the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley. Sign up today! From Left to Right: Jim Tillery-36 Packard, Masons 34 Terraplane, Ginny Largent-56 Ford Victoria The Shenandoah Region was well represented at the 41 st Annual Sully Plantation Show hosted by the George Washington Chapter/Mount Vernon Region of the Model A Ford Club of America (MAFCA). In addition to Shenandoah Region and MAFCA members Rich and Ginny Largent and Wayne and Sharon Parker, who pulled duty at the registration and parking venues, SR members Jim Tillery, Jerry Lunt, Curt and Suzette Mason, and Bill Stover also made their way to the lawns adjacent to the beautiful Sully Plantation House in Chantilly, VA. Since Curt s doctor had not cleared him to drive his car due to recent surgery, Rich took over the controls at sunrise and piloted the Terraplane over the Blue Ridge and along Route 50 with Ginny (driving the 56 Victoria) and Jim Tillery (in his 36 Packard) in hot pursuit. Each of these cars was making the longest journey undertaken by their current owners, which added an element of suspense to the trip. The day turned out to be picture perfect, with temperatures in the low 80 s, clear dry air, and puffy white clouds driven by a cooling breeze. It appeared that the maximum capacity of 400 cars had been (Continued on page 5.) President s Column (Continued from page 1.) Torrential rains on the previous night had made the grounds pretty soupy, but the show went on as planned, with around 150 or so vehicles. We brought some of their materials home to peruse, and perhaps pick up some ideas for our own shows in the future. A reminder to all of us that if you wish something to be placed in the newsletter it is up to you to get it sent to Donna for inclusion. Her address is 2work4good@gmail.com. It will take us a while to get into the swing of using this, so please use Remember to check the club website for more information on club activities: it as much as you can. Any article of interest is certainly appreciated! Our next meeting is in the club shelter, hosted by Chris and Fuzzy, and will be on Thursday, July 3 at 7 PM. Don t forget to bring your utensils, plates, drinks and a dish to share! See you there! Sick Call Just arrived home from Orlando, where Bob remains in the hospital. He had surgery today. The doctor found two spots that were bleeding. Bob came thru surgery fine, but the doctor did not want to release him until he was sure everything is going to be okay. I am very impressed with the Florida Orlando Hospital. It has patients. After receiving the 2 pints of blood, Bob's color is much better. It has been a long day. Please continue to pray for Bob. I know God is going to heal him and he will be well shortly. Thanks, Elsie

4 PAGE 4 THE SPLIT RIM VOLUME 27 NO Poor Man's Tour planned Forty-two years ago AACA regions in Winchester and Cumberland worked together to organize an annual overnight fall tour. The concept was that it would be an annual tour that gave members the opportunity to drive their cars, see some scenic and automotive beauty, and make some new friends. This tour became known as the "Poor Man's Tour" and the responsibility of hosting this event is shared in alternate years between the Shenandoah Region and the Queen City Region AACA clubs. This year's tour will b held on September 27 and 28 and is hosted by the Shenandoah Region. The 2014 tour will head south through the beautiful Shenandoah Valley from Winchester to Staunton, past pristine farms, colorful foliage, and quaint small towns. In Staunton we will visit the Frontier Culture Museum, the classic car collection of Bruce Elder, and various antique and boutique shops. We will overnight at the historic Stonewall Jackson Hotel, a beautiful hotel in the heart of Staunton and within walking distance of the historic downtown. It also is close to Bruce Elder's car collection, the old train station, and numerous antique and boutique shops and restaurants. The Shenandoah Region has secured a block of rooms specifically for Tour members. It's important that you get your reservation in as soon as possible as rooms fill up quickly during this time. Call the hotel direct to make your reservation and indicate that you are with the Shenandoah Region AACA to obtain the hotel's discount of $149. The hotel's phone number is For further information on the tour, contact President Barry Smith (smithbgto@comcast.net) or board member and tour organizer Jim Tillery (TilleryJD@gmail.com). What a difference a century makes! Share this with your friends, children and/or grandchildren! The year is 1910, over one hundred years ago. What a difference a century makes! Here are some statistics for the Year 1910: The average life expectancy for men was 47 years. Fuel for this car was sold in drug stores only. Only 14 percent of the homes had a bathtub. Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone. There were only 8,000 cars and only 144 miles of paved roads. The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph. The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower. The average US wage was 22 cents per hour. The average worker made between $200 and $400 annually. A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year, a dentist $2,500 per year, a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year. More than 95 percent of all births took place at HOME. Ninety percent of all doctors had NO COLLEGE EDUCA- TION! Instead, they attended so-called medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press AND the government as 'substandard.' (Continued on page 5.)

5 VOLUME 27 NO. 7 THE SPLIT RIM PAGE (Continued from page 4.) Sugar cost 4 cents a pound. Eggs were 14 cents a dozen. Coffee was 15 cents a pound. Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used Borax or egg yolks for shampoo. There was no such thing as under arm deodorant or tooth paste. Canada passed a law that prohibited poor people from entering into their country for any reason. Leading causes of death were: 1. Pneumonia and influenza 2. Tuberculosis 3. Diarrhea 4. Heart disease 5. Stroke The American flag had 45 stars. The population of Las Vegas, Nevada was only 30. Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and iced tea hadn't been invented yet. There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day. Two out of every 10 adults couldn't read or write and only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school. Eighteen percent of households had at least 1 full-time servant or domestic help. There were about 230 reported murders in the ENTIRE U.S.A. yes, people have changed, and almost everyone owned a gun! From my , I can forward this to someone else without typing it myself. From there, it will be sent to others all over the WORLD, all in a matter of seconds! Imagine what it may be like in another 100 years! Sully Plantation Show Results (Continued from page 3.) reached by about 11:00, and judging of cars in the 38 vehicle classes took place over the next couple of hours. Several vendors kept the many paid customers ($10 gate fee per adult, discount for kids and geezers) well fed throughout the day, beginning with chicken and sausage breakfasts and rolling right on through pulled pork sandwiches, Italian sausages, ice cream, soft drinks and funnel cakes. Several days of rain during the previous week had made the field not only somewhat damp and muddy, but also lush with long grass that had not been cut due to the rains, so there was a bit of slipping and sliding as the cars made their way to their positions. Fittingly, it was the muscle men who had to deal with the muscle cars, whose high horsepower was pretty much useless as the rear wheels spun on the mud and wet grass. At 3:00, everyone gathered in front of the plantation house for the awards ceremony. The Shenandoah Region folks came through with a The Winner s Circle: From left to right Suzette and Curt Mason, Ginny and Rich Largent; Jim Tillery, Jerry Lunt, Sharon Parker. very respectable showing: Rich and Ginny Largent, Second Place "Fords 54-59; Jerry Lunt, First Place in "Fords 32-42;" Jim Tillery, Second Place in "All Packards;" Sharon Parker First Place in "Ford A Commercial; and Curt and Suzette Mason s Terraplane, First Place in "All other " With such a great day to be had and an ending like that, you can be sure they all will be looking to register early for the 2015 show. Next year maybe some of the Region s other members will join them for a Fun Run and, who knows, bring home some of that Chantilly gold too.
