2 LOCAL HAPPENINGS At last, Mog weather for all. It certainly is great to be able to drive our Mogs without a parka and insulated boots. Please send your Pod events schedule to Steve Hutchens for listing on our web site. Be sure to check that calendar and know that you are welcome at any of the events. The more Mogs, the merrier. Coming soon to the Southern Pod is our annual Mog & Grog drive. Well, actually, it is the wine tour led by Wayne (The Potentate of Pinot) Harris. It is always a great drive and splendid wines to taste. Wayne knows all about those wines that cost more than a tank of petrol but he provides for those of us with more humble taste, too. Next up is the ABFM at Portland International Raceway Aug. 31-Sept. 3. Registration packets are available Friday evening Aug 31. We gather for breakfast at 8 AM Saturday and then the five minute drive to the greensward to be surrounded by 800 British cars. There will be food, music and a day of Morgan stories. Can it get better than this? But wait, there s more Saturday evening we ll adjourn to the Farm Estate of Debra and Roscoe Nelson for our après ABFM food, beverage and story time. All in all, a great day. Won t you plan to join us? 5 Upcoming Event: There and Back Again: Due to an almost complete lack of interest in a Sept. 'Not From Vancouver Nor To Whistler Run', as we did last year, I am going to cancel a similar drive this year. However, I am going to the Portland All Brit Meet and am planning an extended route there and back. This would be: Wed. Aug 29, -- Leavenworth; Enzian Inn, 'deluxe' accommodation in a somewhat 'hokey' Bavarian town, cost $125 + tax Thurs. Aug 30,-- drive to Hood River, should be a fun drive. Stay at Best Western, $ inc. tax Fri. Aug 31,-- Visit Western Antique Aeroplane and Automobile Museum in Hood River, hosted by member Doug Davee, cars and 85 aircraft, should be interesting! - stay at Portland Inn, (see link Portland All Brit Meet), $ inc. tax for 2 nights Sat. Sept All Brit Meet with vintage racing. Meet is beside the track and usually a good field of racers. Southern Pod hosting a dinner Sun. Sept Drive home or more racing and drive to Hood River that evening, stay at Hood River Mon. Sept Drive home via the east side of Mount St. Helens and Mount Rainier and 'Old Highway' 9 I haven't been to Portland in awhile but it is a good meet with the bonus of good vintage racing. I'm also looking forward to seeing the 'Southern Folks' again. Let me know if you would like to join this weekend 'jaunt'. Ric MacDonald ricmacd@telus.net or cell

8 Southern Exposure (Notes from the Southern Pod) By Claire J. Hauge 2012 VanDusen & Improvisation May 17-22, 2012 Top down driving in Morgans in May in the Pacific Northwest is always a little risky but what fun is life without a little adventure. Several members of the Southern Pod took a risk in mid-may heading to the traditional gathering spot in Olympia as the jump off point for a trip north and the first field meet of the year in Vancouver B.C. The weather cooperated for the Thursday afternoon drive, so tops were down for a pleasant drive. After dinner at a favorite Mexican place and a good night s rest, a respectable showing of Southern cars travelled north to the border (Bowman, Crandall, Harris, Hauge, Jones and Stromquist). Friday morning traffic was fairly light on I-5 so we made good time on the road and an easy border crossing provided an early afternoon arrival in Richmond. After a quick tour through the parking lot to look at the British cars gathering for the Field Meet, we decided on a late lunch at the Hotel Pub. Later in the evening, more of the southern group arrived (the Barofskys, Buffum,Waterman, Miles and Morgans), and a contingent from the South drove to Surrey where Ron & Yvonne Theroux had prepared an incredible dinner for the out-of-towners. The hospitality was outstanding and a great way to start the weekend. Rain showed up sometime during the night but, as usual, it didn t last long and the turn-out at VanDusen Gardens for the show was good. The gardens were in full bloom this year and absolutely spectacular. As we entered the show field, a kind young man let us know that the sprinklers had come on (unexpectedly) during the night so all the class marker signs had been knocked over. He advised, that when parking on the field, we d just have to improvise. I looked at him, as innocently as possible, and said, You did notice we re driving Morgans, right? That s what we do - improvise! Joan Stewart announced later in the day that over 650 cars were registered for the event. By my count, 32 Morgans were on the field: ten 4/4 s; ten Plus 4 s, six Plus 8 s and five Plus 4 Drop Head Coupes and one Three-Wheeler. At mid-day, a great lunch was provided by the Northern Pod ladies. Kudos to the cooks and to Mike Powley who did a great job as MC for the awards ceremony. Following the show, we were invited to Surrey for the After-Field-Meet-Party hosted by Ken and Pat Miles. Once again, the steaks were grilled to perfection! The first day drove down Whidbey Island and took a ferry to Port Townsend where we stayed at Manresa Castle. We arrived in plenty of time to visit the shops and galleries before regrouping for a great dinner at the Castle. The next morning we were greeted with a light rain, which only got worse throughout the day. Nevertheless, Crandall s, Stromquist s and Hauge s drove on to Seaview by way of scenic Hood Canal past logging clear-cuts, mud flats, forests, lakes and farmland. Bob s route took us through central Grays Harbor County along the Satsop River. The drivers on this leg of the trip should be awarded extra points for the degree of difficulty. The rain was relentless, so what could have been a relaxed scenic drive was instead a challenging course obscured by rain and clouds. All our concentration was focused on getting to the destination safely. A few rest breaks, a stop to reconnect wiper motor wires and a few water soaked towels later (improvising), we ended up at the Shelburne Inn in Seaview. The Shelburne was established as an Inn in 1896 and is still a comfortable BB filled with antiques, stained glass windows and original art by owners and artists Dave Campiche and his wife Laurie Anderson. After a quick lunch, we took advantage of the cozy lobby to debate the problems of the world then topped off the evening with a wonderful dinner at the Inn. Early the next morning, we were treated to a gourmet breakfast and then headed inland. The rain was beginning to let up (just a little) but enough to remind us why we love driving the cars and why we ll be back in them this time next year, headed to Canada, finding more back roads, enjoying the beautiful scenery along the way and improvising when needed. 11 VOLUME 32, NUMBER 8 MOGNW - NWMogazine August 2012 Southern Exposure (Notes from the Southern Pod) By Claire J. Hauge Photos by: Carla Dietz and Claire J. Hauge Devil s Punchbowl XVII June 14-16, 2012 All the traditional elements of a Devil s Punchbowl weekend made Heinz 2012 event a grand success: exceptional weather, fine food, impressive roads, first-rate friends and fun cars. On Thursday night, folks gathered at the Hauges house in Longview for a dinner of salmon chowder, spicy meatball soup, salad, and an assortment of breads and desserts. Morgans were parked on the street and provided a car show for the residents in the neighborhood. There was no shortage of wine or conversation! It was a terrific way to catch up and unwind after a day of travel. Gathering in Longview Heinz ambitious route required a very early Friday morning departure. Thankfully the sun was out and after a quick drivers meeting in the hotel parking lot, engines started and we were on the road headed west out of Longview to catch the Cathlamet/Westport Ferry which crosses the Columbia River. After the crossing, we headed east on Hwy 30 in Oregon and encountered the first of two very steep roads on the tour, providing a hill climb (of sorts) and an opportunity to test our cars and driving skills. Not long after that we found ourselves near Mist, Oregon on Hwy 202 and were rewarded with a simultaneous view of Mt. Adams, Mt. Hood and Mt. 11

12 St. Helens as we crested the top of the hill. A short rest break at Camp 18 developed into another car show and photo op. Camp 18 is a roadside stop at Mile Post 18 on Hwy 26 to the coast. The restaurant is famous for excellent food in large portions and the logging museum - a favorite stop-off whenever traveling Hwy 26. After the break, we wound our way to Hwy 101 via Hwys 26 & 53. A few miles down the road, we came across another perfect Morgan road with at least 20 miles of left-hand-righthand-twists-and-turns. This route took us into the town of Nehalem for a lunch stop on a sun -drenched deck overlooking the Nehalem River. Talk about a place hard to leave!! But we were promised more good roads and beautiful back-country scenery, so off we went. An hour after lunch, we encountered a narrow one-lane bridge and the second hill climb of the day on Hwy 101 as it passes through Neskowin. At this point we looped on and off Hwy 101 several times to enjoy the less-travelled scenic roads in the area and eventually arrived at Cape Foulweather and the Alpine Chalets. There was just enough time to check in and unpack before heading for Mo s West and the traditional Friday night diner near the Punchbowl. Saturday we enjoyed coffee and sticky buns for breakfast in the parking lot, browsing the regalia table, sightseeing or just enjoying a leisurely day in the sun. Of course, don t forget the opportunity for fiddling in the parking lot with bonnets up for show-and-tell. The tourist highlight in the area this year was tsunami debris on the beaches including a Japanese pier on Agate Beach consisting of 165 tons of concrete and steel measuring 66 feet long, 19 feet wide and 7 feet high. But the highlight of Saturday is always the parking lot potluck with a selection of food and beverages too long to recount. A huge hit this year was Yvonne Theroux fresh baked oysters. She s setting the bar pretty high for next year!! Speaking of next year, Heinz is already planning Devil s PunchBowl XVIII. Hope you will put it on your calendar. I can t wait! 12
