Vol. 24 No. 2,3 February, March 2004 MOGNW cars in New Zealand 14 Morgans provide Art In Motion for 4400 miles text and photos from Bob Stinson Thanks to the generous efforts of Ken and Pat Miles, we had six Mogs from North America touring beautiful NZ for 38 days of sunshine, sports car roads, and the exceptional hospitality of the NZ Morgan Club. Along with the Miles were Dick Dice, Tom & Marilyn (AKA Mel) Henderson, Vern Dale- Johnson, Rod and Lynne Dale- Johnson (Navigators), Jack & Gladys MacNaughton (LA Plus 4 Club) and Bob & Barbara Stinson. The tour was organized by our UK friends (8 Mogs) lead by George & Janet Proud. A number of the Brits had difficulties with the entry into New Zealand Inspection (MAFF) even though their cars were spotless. The two day delay was celebrated by T-shirts reading "I FAILED MY MAFF'S TEST'. Root cause of the test result was traced to an Officious BIT**! hopefully now transferred to Chatham Island. Tom Henderson won over our Kiwi hosts with his reading of Bill Bryson's explanation of the alleged sport of Cricket. Dick Dice entralled the witty Brits with Bert McCabe stories. One of the many highlights was our stay in Napier, the Art Deco Capitol for Art Deco Days. Morgans were properly displayed on the main street. We rented period costumes to join the Festival while about 150 vintage cars paraded thru the streets. The newest Mog was a /4 operated by a lady dentist. The oldest was our 1960 Plus 4 prepared by the Morgan Shop in Sequim. All ran strong with no major mechanical breakdowns. The cars were spectacular, but the people made the trip.

THE BUSTLE BACK Wayne Harris, President In looking back at 2003, I m reminded that there were wonderful and exciting times for all of us. Unfortunately, there was sadness too. We all mourned the passing of Peter Morgan. Many started their engines at 5:00 A.M. on the day of his funeral to commemorate his life and his influence on ours. Were you one of those who got up early to participate? Many were saddened as well by the passing of the Plus 8. We hope its replacement will be as successful. The excitement of the year revolves around our Morgans and the opportunities to participate in MOGNW events. The ABFMs in Vancouver, Bellevue and Portland are particularly noteworthy. Each has its own character and flavor and should be sampled by all. In addition to the meets, the gatherings afterward are always a success. In 2003, Pat and Ken Miles hosted the dinner after VanDusen with a steak barbecue. Barb and Gil Stegen showed us how many kinds of sausage can be grilled for our delight after Bellevue, and Ann and Dick Tilden hosted the ribs and jazz after the Portland meet. Two special events last year need to be remembered, Dave and Thea Wellington,s 10 th anniversary rerun of the Morgan Mountain Caper and the 10 th anniversary running of SpudMOG. The Idaho contingent; Bob Adair, Dick and Karen Dennis, Lisa Holley and all the MOGNW members in Idaho went overboard with their hospitality. The annual banquet for MOGNW was held on February 6 th and 7 th in La Conner, Washington. Bert McCabe of La Conner was the instigator and facilitator of the banquet, and those who attended will remember the weekend and the banquet with fondness. Those who were present were witness to the presentation of two new awards. Claire Hauge was awarded the Crumbled Cookie award for having obtained and served cookies with the Morgan wings and with the MOGNW emblem printed in the frosting. This all occurred at the commencement of the Devils Punch Bowl run this year. Gil Stegen was presented the Morgan Mobil Economy Run award for reaching 40 MPG in his Cadillac Escalade during the Bob Nelson Memorial Run. The Eternal Turn Signal, with flashing lights, was presented to Bob Hauge for his mile venture with his left signal flashing, after leaving the Bellevue Meet, on his way to the Stegen s. The Press On Regardless award was a tough call this year. Spud MOG was very hard on generators. The Miles lost a generator in Clarkston, Washington, and then were struck by another car as they almost made it to Sun Valley. Loretta Nelson lost bolts from her Alternator, picked them up from the side of the road and was repaired by Bill Button and Ron Theroux. But, Doug and Lilo Barofsky s generator disintegrated 20 miles from civilization. Armature segments were striking the underside of the bonnet like bullets, the wiring insulation was fluffing off, and it sounded like the engine was coming apart. After calm analysis, a cell phone call to order a new generator, and an assurance that the battery would get them to Boise, they drove on. At 10:00 A.M. the next morning, UPS deliver a generator to the hotel. By noon, Doug and Lilo were on the road with the entire contingent, on the way to Sun Valley. An award was created last year by Ron Theroux, the President s Award. This year, the recipient has been a friend for years, my advisor, mentor, agitator and pot stirrer, Bill Button. He deserves all the accolades I can offer. Get your cars out of winter storage and get ready for Spring.

from the Southern Pod by Heinz Stromquist The southern pod s February social at Portland Brewing was both well attended and very noisy. In keeping with our last few meetings, eighteen people turned out, including two newcomers. David Schwabe, who had been a member of the club in the early days, has been re-infected by the Morgan bug and hopes to resuscitate a car that hasn t run for the past ten years. Unbeknownst to me, David lives in my neighborhood, which adds one more Morgan to what may possibly be the largest concentration of Morgans in North America! What a claim! Please prove me wrong on this, but within one mile of my house there reside at least six Morgans there were eight until someone moved. If it s not the highest number, it s a good number none the less. The second newcomer was Jay Brandon whose name should be familiar to many of the old timers. He was the original owner of the Horsebrass Pub in Portland and ran the newspaper ad that brought together the founding members. Jay has had several Morgans over the years but probably none as fine as the brand new anniversary edition Plus 8 he brought to the meeting cream with chocolate wings. We all stood out in the rain and admired it. As always, conversations bounced all over the place, from the virtues of the newly announced North American Aero 8 to the new V-6, which was just officially given the name Morgan Roadster. With the passing of both the Plus 8 and the Plus 4, Morgan has, for the first time in many years, eliminated the Plus designation from the lineup. Larry Vandermay and Vicky are in England this week and will do the obligatory pilgrimage to Malvern Link, so we may possibly get a first hand report on both cars at our March or April social. Here s a positive thought: daylight increases by about two minutes per day (you notice that when you walk the dog every morning at six), which means that the driving season is almost here and that the cure for cabin fever is just around the corner. There s more to spring than flowers! Happy Mogging. MORGAN MEDIA TEAM PRESS RELEASE An Anonymous Parody The Morgan Motor Company today announced the long-awaited name of its new V-6 powered model, the "Roadkill". Matthew Parkin, Marketing Director at the MMC, told waiting journalists that the Roadkill marked a new triumph for the company's line-up. "We've upped production to make 100 a week", said Parkin, adding "We took orders for 130,000 units last week during the Factory Tour (every Thursday at 2:00PM, holidays excepting), so the waiting list is up to 27 years again!" David Dowse, MorganWorks Race Team Manager stated, "We're going to race the Roadkill GT in the Brixton Cruise. Our avowed goal and Team Plan is to knock the 5-year old VW Golf with tinted windows and the big exhaust pipe off the "Cruise" pole position within 3 years." The Team will offer a sponsorship program to help finance the effort. For 10 pounds each, 25,000 sponsors will have their names and family trees inscribed on the car.

Rocky Mountain Reconnaisance The temperature outside Calgary Airport was hovering close to -30 C when Treacy flew infrom Victoria to join me on a trip to Banff/lLake Louise to research the route for the 2004 Rocky Mountain Revival. Our drive to Banff was uneventful thanks to the Audi's 4WD. We were to bless the Quattro system several times before the weekend was over. Old Mog had been left in Victoria in Jim Walters' capable hands for a major refit. That is a whole other story. The next day we set off to run through the route and book the first hotel. A blizzard was blowing between Banff and Lake Louise and the highway was closed at Field. We opted for the back road. There was about a foot of snow lying on the road and once committed to it there was no turning back. We followed the solitary set of tracks and hoped for the best. After thirty minutes white-knuckle driving, we pulled into one of the hotels we had envisioned for a stop over. After enquiring about rates, etc. we pushed onto Lake Louise to refuel and regroup. By now the roads were deserted and commonsense dictated that we return to Banff/Canmore. In Canmore we decided to look in on the Georgetown Inn, the scene of our 1994 rendezvous. The hotel is undergoing a renovation but the pub is still open. After much discussion we decided that it would be appropriate to start off from the same location as we did in The plan therefore is to meet Sept 9th 2004 at The Georgetown Inn, or , georgetowninn@cb.monarch.net We will stay at the Inn for 2 nights. On the Friday we will motor out to Lake Louise for lunch and then stop off in Banff on the way back where a variety of activities are possible. On Friday evening dinner has been arranged at a restaurant in Canmore. Saturday we will set off for Jasper where we will stay for 2 nights, Sept 11th & 12th. Accommodation details will follow after our April reconnaisance of Jasper. Monday Sept 13th we will head to Edmonton and stay over night. The following day we will travel to The Reynolds Motor Museum in Wetaskawin. It has a world class collection of cars and aircraft and is well worth the visit. We hope to obtain access to their storage sheds and restoration area. This part of the trip is optional. That is the plan so far. Treacy and I are hoping for a good turnout so mark your calendars now and call the Georgetown Inn for your reservations. Anyone interested in coming can contact us, Lloyd and Treacy Reddington, at or , or after April 6 th, treddington@pacificcoast.net. The Midlands Report from Judd Marten Well, the Midlanders had a busy January and February, in addition to the fabulous Annual Banquet in LaConner (thanks, Bert and Mindy!). We met at Salty's on Alki, January 17, for the first monthly social. These will be held during 2004 on the third Saturday of each month, for lunch, "somewhere" in the Puget Sound region. Seriously, we're trying to find a friendly warm atmosphere, with good food and some privacy. Salty's has a great view and neither Marishka nor I have to be fully awake to get there on time (right down the street from us), but the food and service were somewhat lacking, according to attendee reports. Many Morgans are in rehab this time of year (including, especially, Kay Jones' flatrad, soon to be the fastest flatrad in the western hemisphere, according to Kay Jones and Robert Couch)--but some Morgans did turn out, along with a nice assortment of Morganeers. We commiserated with each other, wishing that we were off to New Zealand, like some of our fortunate fellows. The next weekend, Gil Stegen again planned and hosted the LeMay Car Museum Tour, in Tacoma, with coffee served from his hot, stealth Cadillac Escalade, still cooling down from warpspeed. I love this place, but then I'm a gearhead. It's cold (in January) and damp, but full of interesting machinery, and the tour includes interesting stories and historical perspectives from the tour director. I really want to hear the sound of the Tucker rear engine, water cooled helicopter engine--which will require some advance notice, no doubt. If I'm forgetting anyone, my apologies, but I spotted, from Canada, Steve and Liz Blake, Brian Thomlinson, and Bob McDiarmid. From the south, we were graced with the company of our President, Wayne Harris, and (I believe also from the southern realm) Jerry Goulet and Dennis Thompson of the Triumph Club. Puget Sounders included Keith and Adine Kretschmer, Patton Buchan, Bill Button, John and Alix Sullivan, Marishka (and your faithful scribe) Marten, and of course, Gil Stegen. Next year, we'll try to get the residence collection included in the tour-- and not too far away in the future (pending successful fundraising efforts), there will be a completely new facility, close to the Tacoma Dome. In February, we had an excellent turnout for the social on February 21, at the Claimjumper in Redmond. This is a nice place, and the food is plentiful and good--with our "own room" but without feeling like you're in a closed office, somewhere in the back. Besides your faithful scribe and wife (and Plus 8--careful on the sequencing there) and our Editor Craig, we had Kay Jones attending with his MGC, Bill and Cass Ward with their Plus 8, Gil Stegen in his 1967 Drophead, Bill Button, Jerry Stafford, Von Pederson, Jim Dietz, Steve Miller, Daryl and Crystal Ozuna with their 1961 Drophead, and Gary Van Hook. Based on favorable reports, we'll be back to the Claimjumper for some future "Third Saturdays" in the months ahead.

The Midlands Report continued I'll end on some matters of mechanical interest to Morgan fixer-uppers (who isn't?). Bill Button is developing a front-end system for Morgans which, he says, will track straight and true, never shimmy, and last oh maybe 230,000 miles. Actually he's developing two systems, one incorporating the new "nylon" type of bushing, and the other with brass bushings, both with chrome hardened surfaces for the kingpins, and a roller bearing at the base. Pretty slick--he had demonstrators in the back of his truck. Truly "shadetree" in the best Morgan sense, to be pondering these mysteries in the parking lot of the Claimjumper, in the back of a pickup truck, while normal people just go to their dealership for service about once every 30,000 miles, and don't have a mechanical care in the world. On another mechanical note, I'll share a revelation which came to me about 3:00 AM one night--if your Morgan has a leaking rear main seal (on a Triumph engine-powered Morgan), check to be sure that the breather tube coming from the block is not restricted with gunk from over the years. Mine was. I had carefully cleaned and repainted the outside of the tube when I had the engine out, being rebuilt, but never thought to check the inside until about 3 years later when it suddenly hit me, at said 3:00 AM. The blocked tube builds pressure right where the engine sure doesn't need it--close to the rear main seal. That's all for now--keep 'em running, and making noise! Hearts and Tarts 2004 text and photos from Steve Blake Valentine s Day was the day for the 2004 Hearts and Tarts run. Unfortunately, we had a small turnout this year. This was the year for holidays and car rebuilds. Seems like most of the club was either in or on their way to or from Australia or New Zealand. Theroux s and Burkholder s cars are being lovingly prepared for the Spring season and some,i suspect, were worried about the weather. Our drive started from the Campbell River Store on 8 th Avenue in Surrey. Win and Christine Muehling joined us. That s right, two cars!! However it was not so bad as we arranged to meet two more cars at the dairy in Lynden. Steve and Liz Blake started off and our two cars raced through the countryside and along Zero Avenue to the Aldergrove Border Crossing. Only a couple cars were in front of us so we cleared quickly to find Mike and Rosemary Powley waiting for us as we drove out of the US Customs. A half-mile sprint down Guide Meridian brought us to the Edaleen Dairy where we met our fourth car driven by Steve Hutchinson. Ice cream cones and coffee were consumed before we headed out. While we only had four cars it should be noted that they were all Morgans! Two brave with tops down and two with tops up! It was a day of anticipation on the weather and we actually only had a few spots of rain on a onemile stretch between Nooksak and Everson. Our drive took us through Lynden and along farm and country roads. After an hour drive we finished at Bob s Burgers and Brew in Lynden. Yours truly left his turn signal on the longest but we didn t have a quorum so no penalty incurred! After lunch we waved goodbye to Steve H. who headed south and the rest of us drove back through the Aldergrove crossing and back down Zero Avenue. It was a brisk but great day for Morganeering!

MOGNW Business Meeting Minutes (edited for publication) Present, Wayne Harris, Ken Miles, Ron Theroux, Kay Jones, Bob Hauge, Craig Runions, Bill Button, Heinz Stromquist, Pat Miles, Marishka and Judd Marten. He noted that they have upcoming meetings planned in March and April. He had a memo from Bob Sterne wanting to have a meeting at his cottage to display some of the G.B. Sterne family memorabilia that he has. He requested that the date be the Labour Day weekend in September. It was noted that this was the date of the Portland ABFM. He was requested to get back to Bill and suggest some other dates but it was also noted that August was very full. Midlands. Craig Runions requested that he would like some more old write ups for the Mogazine like Mike has done in the past. Old Business. Event funding. Ken circulated a report on his ideas for the funding. He stated that he would like the finding to be a determined amount for each ABFM and then the rest divided on a membership population basis. Judd said that he was between the two ideas. He stated that more money should be spent than just the ABFM. He differs from Ken (continued next page)

Meeting Minutes continued that he says the extra money should not be population divided but would like it divided according to the executive decision. Heinz stated that is should be a perceived fairness issue and money decisions should be taken out of the hands of the local reps. Only club wide events should be funded and these are the ABFMs. He would eliminate all the discretionary funding and that funding only be that determined by the executive. Long discussion re which events are going to be funded and to how much. Motion - That the policy be that the executive will decide which events will be funded and these will include the three ABFMs and the Vancouver Island Fathers Day picnic. Proposed by Bill Button, Seconded Ken Miles. Amended that the annual party be included. Amendment proposed by Heinz Stromquist, seconded Craig Runions. The amendment was defeated. The Motion passed without the amendment. Motion - That we fund the regions by a budgeted amount for the ABFMs and the Island, supplemented by a regional discretionary amount based on the population of the various regions. Proposed Bill Button, Seconded Kay Jones. Passed. Motion - If a region under spends the amount budgeted on the ABFM, provided that the ABFM has been adequately funded, the under spent amount will be transferred to the region,s discretionary fund. The regions have the discretion to use their discretionary funds however they decide. Proposed Marishka Martens. Seconded Ken Miles. Passed. Motion - That the pod reps or an executive member should inform hosts of unfunded or underfunded events that they may charge participants at their discretion. Proposed Kay Jones, seconded Bill Button. Passed Motion - That the three ABFMs be funded at $350 and the Island at $200. An additional $600 be discretional funding divided on regional numbers. Proposed Bill Button, Seconded Judd Martens. Amendment that the discretional funding to be divided in a ratio on paid up membership as of the last year. Passed. Calendar of Events. April 24 LaConnor Tulip Run by MG club. Craig Runions is going to add some Vintage car race dates to the calendar in the Mogazine. July 24th. Midland ABFM is looking for a host and Bill gave some suggestions. One of the last two weekends in October will be the Bob Nelson memorial run and the executive meeting will be changed to allow for this. New Business. Annual Banquet. It was noted that the hotel was great but that Bert McCabe would most likely not do it again. Discussion as to what we should do next year. Suggested that we go back to Port Ludlow and that Kay Jones look into it and report back. Suggested date to be Feb 4-5-6th Membership Renewals - Craig Runions will send list of non renewals to reps and they can decide what to do.
