1 March 2012 HOGWASH DIRECTOR S ARTICLE I hope everyone is doing well and looking forward to what may be an early, riding season. As I write this, it is early February, sunny skies and 72 degrees! But, this is Atlanta, if you don t like the weather wait and few minutes and it may change drastically. Having attended the Road Captain s Meeting on January 28, I am very excited about the rides being placed on the calendar for the upcoming months. At the meeting, Diana Bodden announced that she was going to take a break and step away from the position of Head Road Captain naming Matt Langley as our new Head Road Captain. Matt is a very energetic and competent rider who came to the meeting with some great ideas and plans for future chapter rides. There was quite a turn out for this meeting. Our chapter has some quality men and women who are committed to providing fun and safe rides for us this year. Should you have some ideas for a ride, don t hesitate to pass these onto Matt Langley or any of your officers. As I have said before, we want to provide rides that will appeal and accommodate all our chapter members. I would like to thank Diana Bodden for her many years of service as Head Road Captain. She has done a great job. Lets all welcome Matt Langley as he comes on board in this position. Every man dies. Not every man really lives. William Wallace Mark Redmon, Director Date Change for March Chapter Meeting March is proving to be a very busy month. We have a number of members who will be attending Daytona Bike Week (March 9 thru the 18). Several of your chapter officers will be attending Harley Officers Training (H.O.T.) in Mobile, AL, March 15 thru the 18. Because of these conflicts, the March Chapter meeting has been moved from March 16 to Thursday, March 22. Location -- see calendar. Mark Redmon, Director The Official Newsletter of the Atlanta Chapter, Inc. Chapter Number 0788 ASSISTANT DIRECTOR S ARTICLE As if riding your Harley isn t rewarding enough, national H.O.G. gives you more reasons with pins and patches that show off your mileage achievements. To enroll, take your motorcycle to Harley-Davidson of Atlanta and have Rene verify your odometer reading. Rene will endorse a Mileage Program form for you. Send the endorsed form to HOG, and they ll send you an official Mileage Program pin and patch just for enrolling. Your official H.O.G. miles will start adding up quickly. Awards begin at just 1,000 miles, with additional awards earned at 5,000 miles, 10,000 miles, and beyond ~ All just for the fun of riding your Harley- Davidson motorcycle! Chuck Fuller, Assistant Director TREASURER S ARTICLE Attendance Jackpot Congratulations to Ray Hunt whose name was drawn for the February Attendance Jackpot. Fortunately, Ray was at the meeting to claim the $160. We will add $50 to the Jackpot for the next chapter meeting, $50. Remember you must be at the meeting and a member in Good Standing, a current member of national H.O.G. and Atlanta Chapter. If the member whose name is drawn is not at the meeting, we will add $10 and try again next meeting. Please have your National H.O.G. card with you at the meeting. Hope to see everyone there. 3 Head Road Captain s Article For those of you that haven t heard, Diana is stepping down as Head Road Captain. She asked me to take over her duties and I have gladly accepted. I would like to thank Diana for all of her hard work as head road captain. She has held this position within the chapter for many years now and has done a great job. She is even still working hard to train me in this new position. Thanks Diana for your many years of hard work and dedication to this chapter! On January 28, we had our road captain s planning meeting, and it was a huge success. We had a great turnout and had many good ride ideas to kick off the 2012 riding season. Please make sure to check out the calendar as we already have a great line up of rides. For anyone who couldn t make the meeting or that is not a road captain, please feel free to talk to a current road captains and tell them your ideas for a ride. You can tell them your ideas and even help plan the ride. Remember that you don t have to be a road captain to lead a ride. You just have to have a road captain present on the ride. Let s make sure to keep that calendar full and have a blast in Matt Langley, Head Road Captain SAFETY OFFICER S ARTICLE Motorcycles and Traffic Signals Many of us have been at a traffic signal and found that our motorcycle is not being detected. This article is to inform you how to best position your motorcycle so that it is detected. The state of Georgia uses two types of loop technology to detect the presence of a vehicle at an intersection; they are the dipole and the quadrupole loop. The quadrupole loops are the standard for present detection in Georgia. See examples. The dipole loop is most sensitive at the left and right edges; the quadrupole loop is most sensitive in the center. The most important thing is to stay in the loop. If you find a traffic signal that is not working properly, please call 511 to report the issue. 511 will connect you to the Office of Traffic Operations (NaviGAtor), with the Georgia Department of Transportation. If you are interested in reading more about this technology and cyclists, please look at the following: 08may/02.cfm Mike Perdue, Safety Officer. Happy Birthday to all! In 2012, we are going to bring back the monthly birthday rides. We will have a scheduled ride once a month for either lunch or dinner to celebrate for all HOG member birthdays in that given month. At this time, Matt Langley and the Fullers will share the responsibility of planning these rides. Each month the ride will be to a different location and some may be during the week and others maybe on the weekend. So, please check out the March calendar as our first birthday ride will be on Sunday, March 25 to Red Robin for lunch. This is a nice, scenic ride to Newnan, GA for some great burgers. Let s wish a Happy Birthday in March to the following HOG members: Andy Andresen, Tommy Collins, Mark Cothern, Erik Grandowski, Sandra Halyard, Jesse Harris, Denise Harris, Randy King, Richard Palmer, and Gail Sudduth. Amanda Langley, MacGyver s Secretary
4 Faces Around the Dealership David Newman Finance / Sales Manager I was born in Muncie, Indiana and grew up on a farm in the farming town of Yorktown, outside of Muncie. I had two sisters and a brother ranging from 7 to 10 years apart. We farmed a little less than 3200 acres. I am the youngest, so after me, Dad ran out of hands for the farm. I attended Ball State University and Dad starting leasing the land. I was very close to my Dad and I am very proud of that part of my life. He has played a big part of whom I am today with a work ethic. When I finished at Ball State, I moved to DeLand, Florida near my oldest sister and where Mom and Dad had wintered. I worked for Wal-Mart for 14½ years and I also worked at a local car dealership for three years. My wife loved living in Cobb County, Georgia for most of her adult life. I found out through Harley-Davidson Motor Co. that there was an opening here in Atlanta. I flew up and interviewed with Jeff and Eddie in January 2010, moved here in February and started in March. I can say I have found a true home here in Georgia and with H-D of Atlanta. I have met more true genuine people here than in 27 years in Florida. Thank you all for welcoming me from the beginning. 5 Cheaha Mountain Ride Meet at 8:30 am and Leave at 9:00 am Join us for a relaxed ride to Cheaha Mountain, AL. Cheaha Mountain is one of the highest points in Alabama, situated in the heart of the Talladega National Forest. We ll leave from and travel through west Georgia on Highway 78, which is pretty darn scenic in itself once we get west of Villa Rica. Once we reach Heflin, AL and the Talladega National Forest, we will ride 20 miles on the Skyway Parkway to the top of Cheaha Mountain, one of the most scenic routes in the southeast. The road itself is well paved, with lots of curves and elevation changes. Newer riders don t, be put off; we ll be riding at a leisurely pace and you won t be left behind! At Cheaha Mountain, be prepared for a walk to the scenic overlook. Make sure to bring cash with you; the park charges a per vehicle fee for access. After our visit to the park, we ll ride back down the mountain to Oxford, AL for lunch near the Mt. Cheaha Harley dealership, so if you re collecting letters for the ABC s of touring, it s the perfect opportunity to pick up an O. The official ride will end in Oxford with lunch. Total distance to Oxford is about 105 miles. We will stop every hour or so to stretch and fuel up. Total ride time of this 3-Pig ride is around 4 hours. David Trefzger, Road Captain IT S HARD TO COME BACK IF YOU NEVER BEEN ANYWHERE! 7 Things Mama Taught Me 1.
