2 Message from the President Lori White Happy New Year! I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and are now ready to get on with the great activities we have planned for In January, we have the Snowflake Bridge and a new event. We were introduced to the Rothney Astrophysical Observatory at our AGM last May. We have planned a tour of the facility on Wednesday, January 30th. Let s all hope for warm weather and clear skies. I m looking forward to seeing many of you at upcoming events. Lori White Message from the Past President Kathi Hamilton Greetings One and All, Wishing you a joyous Holiday Season with a bubbly New Year. In October, I sent thinking of you card to Huong Muzik re: illness of husband, Ivan, and a thinking of you note to Mary Fenwick re: difficult summer. In November, I sent card of condolence to Theresa Leitch on the passing of husband, Angus. A donation was made to the Scarboro United Church in Angus memory. I also sent get well wishes to Alana Harrison after her shoulder surgery. 4 CPO Dress Rehearsals 2019 The CPO holds a selection of Dress Rehearsals during the fall, winter and spring. The Rehearsals are always at am on Fridays (with very rare exceptions) at the Jack Singer Concert Hall. The performances are open to those who are 55 years plus and the cost per person per performance is $15.00, payable at the door. Groups of PEGG Women's Club members have been attending the Rehearsals for over four years now and by and large the ladies have really enjoyed their experiences. The performances are truly working Rehearsals that are fun and educational to attend. The atmosphere is relaxed and you learn about the enormous effort that the conductor and orchestra put into delivering the perfect performance. The next Rehearsal and the first for 2019 is on Friday January 18 th at 10 am Music of the Movies Conductor : Sarah Hicks This performance is a tribute to great film scores and composers including Avengers, Frozen, Titanic and more. The Convenor for this Rehearsal is Rae Jones. She can be reached at: or rae.jones@telus.net Rae will send a reminder to everyone 2 weeks prior to the Rehearsal. Please let us know if you plan to attend one week ahead of the performance as we need to let the CPO know how many ladies from our Club will be attending. Also please let us know if you would like to stay for lunch after the show (Yummy). The February CPO Rehearsal will be on Thursday February 14 th and is: Rush Hour: Romance Conductor: Karl Hirzer Guest Artist: Yi-Jia Suzanne Hou, Violin Please note that this date is a Thursday, not a Friday. A reminder about the Rehearsal will be sent out 2 weeks prior to the performance Happy listening!!!

5 The Rothney Astrophysical Observatory Private Tour Located on a hilltop in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, the University of Calgary's Rothney Astrophysical Observatory (RAO) is a facility dedicated to expanding our knowledge of the Universe and educating the public about the wonders of Astronomy. The site provides easy access from Calgary and an unobstructed view of the entire night time sky. By day, there is stunning views of the Rocky Mountains. The RAO has one of the BIGGEST telescopes in Canada. The 1.8 meter diameter of the A.R. Cross Telescope's primary mirror completes the set of the three largest telescopes in Canada. Start time 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm Wednesday, January 30 th 2019 $10.00 per person by January 25 th (will be refunded or credited to your account if cancelled due to weather) We will need everyone s and cell phone numbers after you sign up. If it s a no go January 30th we can let everyone know by 4 pm or sooner. Please dress for weather. This event is open for members and friends. The Rothney Astrophysical Observatory (RAO) is located near Priddis (Alberta), about 30km southwest of the Calgary city center. It is less than an hour's drive from the University of Calgary (U of C). Take Macleod Trail South. After passing Sundance, turn right onto Highway 22X (this is the Marquis of Lorne Avenue), heading west towards the mountains. This is area is all under construction. Continue past Spruce Meadows, past 37th St, past 69th St, and 83rd St, to a major intersection where Highway 22X meets Highway 22 (this intersection is illuminated after dark). Turn left toward Millarville (heading south). About 2 km down Highway 22, look for the big RAO road sign on the right side or west side of the road. Just beyond the sign, turn left, go over the cattle gate and follow the gravel road up the hill to the parking area.

We try to avoid ice and we stay home when it is snowing or very cold and windy. The varied itinerary is on the website or contact June.
