1 Living the Adventure! Living the Adventure! is the official Club motto. It encapsulates what we do as a Club. Come and join us Goog s Lake The enthusiastic members of the Wagga Wagga Four Wheel Drive Club delight in wilderness experiences and adventure in the great outdoors. Members enjoy and care for the environment and have a positive approach to conservation which is promoted through education and setting good examples. The club encourages family activities as much as possible, with social events and regular trips to places of interest in the bush. The club is affiliated with the Recreational 4WD Clubs Association of NSW and the ACT, and supports its code of ethics.

2 Goog s Track 2016 On a sunny mid April Saturday morning we assembled at the Silverlite servo. There was myself and Shane (from Canberra), Arron, John and Les and Glynn rearing to head off into the South Australian outback. Morning tea at the Yanco Weir, lunch in Hay and then on to Gol Gol where we camped for the night next to the Murray River. Day two, we crossed borders and through the quarantine station into SA. Now to find fresh fruit and veggies. That was done in Morgan, then off to Wilmington and the Stoney Creek Retreat for camp. Nice spot if you don t have to put pegs in the ground. Day three we headed into Port Augusta for fuel and last minute supplies, like real coffee. From there on to Mount Ive Station for three nights. For a few of us, it was the first time we had travelled west of Port Augusta and all new territory. The road into Mt Ive was good gravel and corrugations. Photo s galore of the submarine at the entrance to Mt Ive and then struck camp. At this stage we realised that John s brakes were not working properly on his trailer. They were inspected in the next few days, but he figured it made very little difference with only one brake working and was left alone. Next day we headed out to Lake Gairdner in two cars as it was more economical than taking all four. The lake was very interesting as it holds a few land speed record and you can see Wombat? why as it is very flat and smooth. Where we walked on the lake is the site for the annual speed week. This where you can bring your fast car and go flat out and be timed. Les encountered his first lot of emu s on the lake. From here we visited a station rock dam. No it contained water! And Les found more emu s. Emu s have been a recurring theme for Les for a number of years. On to the Organ Pipes and Shane Grant Yeo PH (02) , Blake Street Wagga Wagga NSW Plus Cryovac Service

3 Volume 1, Issue 1 Goog s Lake played mountain goat. Short detour before heading back to camp was to the giant wombat holes. Yeah, you could almost walk into them. Truly! After lunch it was the climb to the top of Mt Ive. Definitely low range as it was quite steep and loose rocks all the way, but absolutely worth the view. We had a visit from a fox during the night which had apparently scared the living daylights out of the English girl from the station office. Our second day at Mt Ive was to be low key, so we did some easy drives around the station and not much done in the arvo. That night the fox was apparently caught by the station hand. Day six we headed off to the Gawler Ranges National Park. Not before I tried to kill myself with an occy strap, so Shane did a bit more driving today. On the way we decided to pick up some fire wood before heading into the National Park. Well we must have picked on the hardest wood in Australia. What started off an easy task ended up in tears with a broken chainsaw and axe. Into the NP, registered, talked to the caretaker who supplied some excellent maps and on to camp at Kolay Hut. After lunch we went for a drive around the park, Kolay Mirica Falls, Pondanna Outstation, Conical Hill, Scrubby Creek camp, Yandinga Camp and along the Mattera Track back to camp and in the dark. Time to go to Ceduna the next morning as we needed to do washing, cloths and ourselves. Morning was spent looking over the rest of the National Park and then travelling to Pildappa Rock for lunch. This rock is much the same as Wave Rock in WA and we spent quite a bit of time climbing over it. Re-aired our tyres as we were back into bitumen. Saturday we played tourist, checked out town and bought our passes to travel on Goog s track. Gwen and Kevin joined our party today and we decided to go out for dinner, after all it was Gwen s birthday. Italian, wasn t too bad. Was a cold night with the wind blowing strong so no-one stayed up late. After fuelling up, coffee and diesel, we headed towards Goog s track which begins in the Yumbarra Conservation Park. Through the dog fence and then into the sand dunes. Not overly difficult driving as the dunes are not that big and the track is well formed. Went looking for some rockholes along the way. Definitely not that easy find, but we did find them with the help of some locals. On to Goog s Lake where there are memorials to the Dentons who pushed the track through the bush in the 1970 s. The Lake was spectacular for us. It not only had water in it, but it also provided some amazing photographic moments at sunset, moon rise and sunrise the next morning. Perfect spot for roast beef in the camp oven. Everyone contributed to a special night overlooking the lake. Anzac Day dawn saw Les and Glynn up early, then packing John decided to jam his finger in his camper drawer. Bit of doctoring was needed as it Oh dear, John

5 May 2016 Goog s Track 2016 continued.. did look ugly. We agreed that Les should drive John s car until the bleeding was under control much to the pleasure of Glynn as he could drive Les s Ranger in the sand and play his own music. On the radio we listened to another group on the track with series one and two Landrover getting constantly bogged. Makes us glad we have modern vehicles. Did come across a couple in a Unimog with a camper on the back and had a good chat with them over lunch. Then on to Mount Finke for our next camp. We did consider climbing it until we saw how big it was, so setup camp with the flies. Kevin and Gwen left us here to do a quick dash home as they had some business in Wagga to attend too. Next morning we could not get out of camp quick enough as the flies woke up early. The exit from Mount Finke takes us across a salt lake, luckily it was dry. The dunes were getting decidedly bigger and a bit more difficult, to the point where John s car got bogged. To the rescue came Aaron with the maxtacks. They got over eventually and then let more air out of his tyres, which helped immensely. Meanwhile we watched a group ahead of us go over a dune towing a Jayco camper. Am sure the camper bounced two metres off the ground. We pushed north through the Yellabinna Regional Reserve and eventually came across the Trans Australian Railway Line. Right turn towards Tarcoola where the Ghan Line separates and travels north. Tarcoola is an interesting look around as it is a basically deserted town. On to Kingoonya for a stay at the pub, disappointing as it was closed for family reasons. Decided to go on to Glendambo to stay. Still had our pub meal though. From here we decided to just head for home. Thought it might take us two and a half days but only took two days, with a stopover at Morgan. Except for Les and Glynn who took an extra day due to a dead fuel pump. Great trip with great company. Thanks guys and Gwen for making it an enjoyable trip. Greg Page 5
