4 sunset country Saturday, 23rd May 2015 Thirteen vehicles left Big Lizzie about 12.45pm on a perfect autumn day heading down the bitumen first stop Nowingie. Turning off at Nowingie and on to the Nowingie side track to look at the historic underground tank which has a galvanized steel water catchment on a slope to run rain and dew into the underground tank. It was a good supply of water for the steam trains and farmers in the area. Back on to the highway turning off at Hattah, straight away Geoff and Jann started to spot wild life but for us at the tail end they had all moved on by the time we got there. We drove through Glen Co station on the way to get into the Sunset National Park, through the gate and onto Last Hope track. Following on this track to Mopoke track dodging puddles along the way all the salt pans had a fair amount of water day/night drive sitting on top of them, as apparently there had been a good rain fall in the area on Monday. We stopped at Mopoke hut at about 3pm for afternoon break. After refreshments we drove back onto Mopoke track again. This end has a lot more sand but after the rain it was pretty easy going. Heading for Pink Lakes we turned onto Honeymoon Hut track then onto Grub track more Kangaroos, this time we saw them or they saw us as they were standing back just watching us go by. Arriving at Pink Lakes we set up chairs for a good view of the sunset over the lake. With dinner over and many photos of the sunset taken, some of them very spectacular we waited for the arrival of Dave to continue the second part of the trip. After a lovely sunset and tea it was 7pm and the 13 vehicles with occupants were ready for the night trip home. Dave was leading the trip home with his trusty mate acting as navigator.

All vehicles made it over the top of this sand rise without any problems and we continued on our way up the Mopoke Track were we stopped at Mopoke Hut for a leg stretch.

This caused a few issues when water got into the distributor of Lisa and Joe s Pajero and stopped the petrol engine.

After a few minor navigation adjustments we made our way to the Mt Jess look out to access the Mt Jess track. All vehicles made it over the top of this sand rise without any problems and we continued on our way up the Mopoke Track were we stopped at Mopoke Hut for a leg stretch. After leaving the Hut we came across a stretch of mud and clay which was cut up a bit. This caused a few issues when water got into the distributor of Lisa and Joe s Pajero and stopped the petrol engine. A quick wipe out with some rag and it fired up again and we were back on our way (must remember to bring CRC). Whilst in this bog hole Mark made an excellent decision to put a snatch strap on Dave and Margaret s Outlander and tow them through the bog as some of the wheel ruts were deep and nobody wanted to see anybody get stuck in the mud. The strap was not needed so it was rolled up and the convoy got going again. Night driving is different, the hills look bigger the ruts look deeper and the trees are closer with all the different shadows playing tricks on your eyes. With a bit of dust and more caution used at night, time got away from us. farewell and headed for home about midnight.

7 problems. Time did really get away, we all said farewell and headed for home about midnight. This trip was something really different.
