3 MILDURA 4WD CLUB New sletter APRIL 2018 Page 3 Trip Reports Flinders Rangers - Trip Leaders Terry and Linda Curran Wednesday 25 April - Anzac Day - Day 1 Six vehicles meet at the Merbein South store where our trip leaders Terry & Linda briefed us on day one of our journey to Stringybark campground to explore Deep Creek Conservation Park and surrounds. Our first stop was the fruit & vegetable inspection at Yamba, all vehicles passed with flying colours but it never stops amazing me the amount of people trying to take fruit over the border. The convoy then made our way through Loxton and onto Karoonda for a brief comfort stop. As it was Anzac day Linda put Mr Google to the test to find us a supermarket open to stock up on our fruit and vegies, the result was Victor Harbor. All of our convoy were loaded onto the ferry making our way across the Murray River. Wellington was our next stop where we decided to stop for lunch. But due to Anzac day the only shop we found open didn t expect an influx for lunch. Leo managed to buy the only pasty, pie and sausage roll so we rolled onto the very picturesque Milang on the edge of Lake Alexandrina to enjoy our lunch. With our tummies full we travelled on winding roads that were very scenic with rolling hills which had tinges of green to Port Elliot. Our next stop was the supermarket at Victor Harbor for our fruit and vegie stock up before making our way to Deep Creek Conversation Park. 5 MILDURA 4WD CLUB New sletter APRIL 2018 Page 5 Continued.. We arrived at Stringybark campground just after 4.00pm to set up camp in time for happy hour where we chatted about the trip down and what was planned for the following day. Des and I would like to thank Linda and Terry for a most enjoyable five days away well done. Jo Lloyd. gpreco@ncable.com.au 32 Eighth Street, Mildura Vic (03) (03)
6 MILDURA 4WD CLUB New sletter APRIL 2018 Page 6 Fri 27th April 2018 Fleurieu Peninsula 4 WD Trip We awoke to blue skies today and packed for another day of driving and surprises, courtesy of Linda s superb planning and navigation. Today we traversed hills and paddocks dotted with sheep and contented cattle, most of which were hand fed as the paddocks are quite dry and eaten out. We passed a blue gum plantationa change from the pines- and could see Port Elliot in the distance on the coast. Our first stop was to have been Alexandrina Cheese factory, but it was not open for business for us early birds. Not to worry, we found their neighbour, Jagged Winery was open, so we settled for coffee and freshly baked biscuits in a quaint café setting and some opted to taste and select wines for later consumption. Having negotiated the dangerous entrance back on to the main road (unfortunately, we found a few testy corners in SA), we made our way into Mt Compass and found the roadside store named Harvest The Fleurieu, which was well stocked with fresh fruit and vegetables and a great selection of goodies made from local produce. I don t think anyone came away empty handed, although all declared we needed nothing!
7 MILDURA 4WD CLUB New sletter APRIL 2018 Page 7 Continued. From here we headed down into Noarlunga, enjoying the expansive vista of the coastal town/suburb from high up in the hills as we approached. Before long, Linda had us parked on the foreshore and enjoying lunch together under a Council pagola. Although the sun shone brilliantly, no one was tempted to join the few surfers out in front of us. But we did have 2 couples keen to don their gear and show us their paddling techniques, so the Onkaparinga River Estuary was our next destination, where Helen and Peter and Linda and Terry entertained us as they prepared for and eventually took to the water. By all accounts, they had a very enjoyable hour on the river, before returning and hefting the kayaks back on top of their vehicles and opting for some dry clothes. While they were paddling, some lazily chatted, then strolled to the nearby beach, once again to look, but not to dip! After fuelling up on the way back to camp, we passed Pyonga Reservoir, first to look from a high vantage point, then to drive across the wall. It is a concrete arch dam, built in 1962 and used to supplement the Happy Valley Reservoir till 1993, when it s own treatment plant was built. 8 MILDURA 4WD CLUB New sletter APRIL 2018 Page 8 Continued. We passed through the holiday town of Normanville, with its many new big homes recently built into the hilly back drop (according to Des, who had passed this way not many years back). Norfolk pines planted along the coastal road added to the holiday atmosphere of the area, after which we passed more dry hills before entering the heavily treed Conservation Park again- and found ourselves home again after another full on day, ready for evening drinks, nibbles and chats.
9 MILDURA 4WD CLUB New sletter APRIL 2018 Page 9 Saturday 28th April Currans and Saunders opted to explore the Talisker Mine Trail in the afternoon, while others went elsewhere. The silver/lead mine was operated from 1862 to 1872, but then later, re worked for arsenic from 1917 to produce was hauled 5 km by bullock dray to Fishery Bay. Talisker Mine employed Cornish miners and supported a nearby township, Silverton, which grew to a pop of 300 at its peak in The walk took us an hour and half, past building remains and fenced off open shafts, with good information boards highlighting the difficult work the miners were engaged in and some photos taken in Very interesting and not particularly easy, but certainly worthwhile. Maureen Saunders. With the promise of pancakes, it was an early rise. Kelvin needed 2 Glenn Awakenings so he could make the 9am pancakes. The pancakes were delicious thanks to Di and Maureen for making them. Lemon, sugar, strawberry s, raspberries, maple syrup and of course cream was gathered to put on them. It was a great start to the day. We left camp at 10am. First for the day was the steep drive to Boat Harbour Beach. Some energetic members ventured by foot to the beach where they were rewarded with a pod of dolphin s playing in the waves. Then the climb back up to the cars. The drive alone to Tapanappa lookout was scenic with morning tea at the lookout. Jo had made a fruit cake which was shared around the members. We travelled along Hay Flat Road where we found Ingalla Falls. At first we thought there may not be anything to see but after the short walk we found the falls. Group picture taken. 10 MILDURA 4WD CLUB New sletter APRIL 2018 Page 10 Continued Sunday April 29th Homeward Trek. Despite the big packup, we were away just after 9.30 with minimum hiccups. Apparently an arthropod tried to hitch a ride to Mildura in Glen and Di s clothes bag, but was found and ejected un ceremoniously. Once on the road, the sun shone beautifully for us as we, for the last time, crossed the rolling hills and left the contented animals behind. Glen noted the silence on the two ways today- maybe all reminiscing on the lovely few days we had had together. But as coffee time came around, we were all happy to call in to Strathalbyn- and join the myriad other Sunday tourists there at the Bakery. Refreshed with food and drinks, ( and Kelvin heated by his Mexican pie), we were soon on the freeway to Murray Bridge, with Glen giving a plug for Monarto Zoo for next time we are in the region. Swan Reach was a pleasant spot to stop for lunch by the Murray River and Cullulleraine was another perfect spot to stop for goodbyes, thanks to Linda and Terry and icecreams for the naughty, before the last leg home. Some called into the weighbridge at Merbein Southbut not too much was heard of the read- outs. The scales read minus 160 to begin with, so a little confusion may have reigned there! Whatever!! Maureen Saunders.
