3 MILDURA 4WD CLUB Newsletter APRIL 2017 Page 3 PYRENEES TRIP Saturday 11th March, 2017 Seven vehicles departed from the roadside in front of Big Lizzie Saturday morning. Present were John and Leanne in their 200 series, Peter and Helen in their Challenger, Kel and Lynne in their newly turbo charged 100 series, Doug in his 80 series, Anne and myself in our GU Patrol all towing camper trailers. Barry accompanied by his grandson Jack in his Patrol GU tray with glide on camper. Our first break was in Sea Lake and our Lunch stop and fuel top up stop was at St Arnaud. We pulled up in a town central car park where a local market was happening. We all sampled the food and strolled around to check out was on offer. We then proceeded down the Sunraysia highway to Avoca where we turned right towards Elmhurst. Before reaching Elmhurst we turned into Sandy Lane and headed toward our campsite at Glenpatrick. We all selected our sites and set up camp. There were still a few hours left of the afternoon so we headed off to check the tracks out in the Nowhere Creek area. After an enjoyable but easy drive and loading up Barry s empty tray with firewood we headed back to camp to light up a fire and enjoy the evening around it unfortunately it started to rain about 9.00pm which sent everyone heading for their digs, bringing an abrupt end to the first day. Saturday s report by Beno and Anne. Sunday 12th March, 2017 Trip briefing began at 9:00 am, we turned right into Elmhurst-Glen Patrick road, following the road until we reached Elmhurst then right turn on main Highway. Left turn, right turn, left turn, right turn, right turn (you get the picture). The entrance to the track had to be here somewhere apparently not. Thanks to the local gentleman for letting us know that the entrance that went through private property had been closed off and set us in the right directions. Back on the Pyrenees highway heading left out of town for a few kms past the cemetery, right turn onto Raglan- Elmhurst road, with a right hand turn onto Lower Wimmera road and onto dirt track and heading up into the hills. The scenery is really lovely with large tree's and ferns. We followed the winding track, right onto Water Race Rd then left onto The Glut Rd, sharp right onto Divided Rd and left onto Lookout Hill Track, this track started to climb and we came across a section that a donkey would have been ok on but that's about it. It got narrow very quickly and was full of scratchadoorus on either side it also started to climb steeply. We decided to turn around and head back the way we came. A little logistics in car manoeuvring and we were on our way. A left, left, right left and right again onto Mount Cole Rd, followed the track and merged onto Reservoir Rd. Quick Comfort Stop at Nando's Hut and off again. Back onto Mount Cole Rd and followed it around till we reached Ben Nevis Rd. This was a fun little track, nice and windy at points with lots of tree's and foliage all over the place. Our illustrious Team Leader (Anne Benson) then decided to take us down an easier track than the one planed as it was suspected it may be washed out or too much of a challenge for the level of some of the team with less experience. So down then East Telegraph Track we went. At first it looked nice and easy, not to steep or difficult, then we stopped. Is that a track before me or a gravel Pitt. Yep it s a grave Pitt. Terry went down the first section then stopped. Out we all got and (slid, tripped) and very slowly made our very way down the very steep hill. We all had a look and a walkabout to decide on the best way down, a decision made Terry began traversing the line of decent with several of us as guides pointing the way. One down next to come, O' crap that s me. Thanks to all for the helping each other point out the line's of decent and when and where to turn. This was a great track, lots of thinking and working out how to approach the descent, controlled decent by all good experience for all. Once we reached the bottom we went to the end of the track, back onto Mount Cole Rd which we followed back across the ridge line and back to camp for a great day out. 5 MILDURA 4WD CLUB Newsletter APRIL 2017 Page 5 PYRENEES TRIP CONTINUED.. Monday 13th March, 2017 After a few fantastic days with some great hill climbs and descents it was time to go home. We left at 10.15am taking a more scenic route rather than the Calder. We headed to St Arnard and the Sunraysia Highway, half an hour in between Landsborough and St Arnard, Beno called through a large gum tree had fallen across the road. It was quite dangerous a decision was made to move it from the road. Anne remained and alerted any traffic that may come along of the dangers ahead. Barry with his patrol hooked up straps and pulled half the tree off the road but a very large part remained on the road. Beno gets out his trusty chainsaw to make the branches more manageable. Next to be tackled was the big branch, Beno attacked the branch with a V cut at the top and as he was cutting through the branch it snapped causing the branch to break into two with one end hitting into Beno s knee knocking him and Barry to the ground. Beno and Barry like the troopers got off the ground, brushed themselves off as if nothing had happened. It was obvious though that Beno was having a problem with soreness in his knee. John helped immensely by capturing the entire situation on film. It took a little while with the nurse and Ambo we had with us that maybe some ice would be appropriate. John with true Ambo experience diagnosed a possible cruciate ligament problem. Beno suggested that there may be a bit of swelling a bit higher up but no one was having that. We stopped at St Arnard for a quick pit stop, a few needed fuel and ice was applied to Beno s knee again as it was starting to swell. We then moved on to Donald and had lunch at the park there, there was a thought that we could go to the award winning Birchip bakery but alas it was closed on a Monday public holiday. We moved on down the Sunraysia Highway and had another pit stop at Lascelles and did some more ice work on Beno s knee, he wasn t complaining too much but you could see he was in a deal of pain. We moved on and stopped at Ouyen for an ice cream and refreshments, it was the decided we were close enough to home so the trip was called to an end. Everybody congratulated Anne and Beno on a great trip, good fun, a few challenges and great friend ship. A great weekend had by all. Monday s report by Kel Robertson. 6 MILDURA 4WD CLUB Newsletter APRIL 2017 Page 6 PORTLAND SAND DUNES Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday 22nd 25th 7 vehicles lined up for a photo shoot at 9:45am while we awaited the 10 Vehicles from the Gippsland Club. With misty rain failing since breakfast time then becoming heavier but easing soon after as most showers around this area do. 17 Vehicles approached the first hill at 10am and FUN had just begun. Our 2nd hill was more challenging with vehicles having 2 directions in which they could choose from. The next stop there was some tobogganing done by young and OLD while airing down of tyres as some dunes were very soft. Some time later while stopping and enjoying the scenic views one Gippsland driver showed off his prowess at doing some alley rings in the sand. Another driver trying not to be outdone by his brother also tried some alley rings but was unlucky and rolled his vehicle but luckily not hurt but it really put a damper on the rest of the weekend especially for the Gippslanders. After lunch some went fishing and 3 vehicles went exploring more sand dunes. No evening meal from the fishermen as the only catch was apparently smaller than their lure and then there was the fully clothed swimmer. (Just have to keep an eye on those waves Jann!!!). Des and Jo, Kel and Lyn, Peter and Jan found a sand dune that we all attempted to get to the top. The two Toyotas succeeded the climb but after a couple of tries the Rodeo just needed more horses in helping out. A good afternoon and plenty of laughs had by all, then back to camp for an enjoyable hot gas shower which was kindly supplied by the Portland Dune Buggy Club, eat our evening meal and chat around the camp fire..
