4 Now let me tell you right from the start that I am not an early morning start type person so when one of our club members suggested that we leave at 5am I soon put that idea to bed. With the Strathbogie trip having a few changes along the way it decided that the trip was to officially start in Swan Hill at 8.30 am. A few members left Mildura on the Friday and moteled it overnight. So it was 5.30am when Dave was going over the George Chaffey Bridge destination Swan Hill, Jann and myself were on the same bridge at 6am with the same destination. With the 200 series Hilux purring along we made Swan Hill with time to refuel, grab breakfast at the big M and meet up with all the other adventurers, time 8.30am. With Mark, Michelle and Steph leading, the rest of the crew (Des and Joe, Dave, Roy, Terry, Terry and Anne, Geoff and Jann) all follow their lead. The rest of the trip was pretty straight forward with stops for fuel, lunch and RBTs at Echuca, Shepparton and Benalla before ending up in the James Reserve camp site at approx. 3pm. We were there in time to get all vehicles in the camp PAGE 4 STRATHBOGIES and Tallarook Saturday 29 October before it was full, long weekend and being close to Melbourne saw to that. Before we made camp Mark was in communication with Andrew and Tim, friends who would meet up with us at camp. With the chance of rain for the next day it was decided to do a short trip through the Strathbogie s. Jann was suffering with hay fever and cold and flu so she stayed at camp to get some rest so I jumped in with Dave and the convoy headed out. We followed tracks with names like Monee Monee and Lighting Ridge Tracks and stopped at a viewing site to see the landscape that we were in and at Lake Nillahcoote. Mark got in touch with Andrew again and it seemed that we weren t too far away from each other. We were on top of the hill looking at the lake and they were on the bottom of the hill on the Midland Hwy looking at the same lake. We continued on our way along the Lighting Ridge Track which led us out to Lima East road and then back to the camp site. Andrew and Tim soon arrived and then we all kicked back with some nibbles and drinks with anticipation for the big day to follow. Geoff Girardi

7 Everybody was up and ready to go exploring on time. We made our way up to the most elevated point and stopped to share the view out to the south and west with some dirt bikers who were already there. The vista was lush green farm land amongst the forested hills. Track info was exchanged with the bikers who were avid speedway followers who often came up to Mildura s Olympic Park speedway. We then headed off down a steep descent into the next valley. Not really to get anywhere in particular it was just a great track down and back up with a few lessons learnt on the importance of momentum, wheel placement and more importantly not to leave our dedicated photographer behind. Our next stop was at a place called the Hell Hole. Which was a gully that had been mined in the 1850 s by water jetting the hillside with high pressure water and collecting the gold nuggets as they were washed down the creek. These actions left a dangerous situation of a mini cliff face which was dangerous to man and animals alike. We continued on lots of tracks had been cut up and had bog hole but no problems getting through We had lunch near a spot that was a former town site but had been reclaimed by the forest. Sunday 30 October Geoff s empty Hilux tray was causing him some traction problems. This was overcome by loading it up with dry wood that the foresters had left cut beside the track. It was only right that we take this excess timber back to camp for our evening warmth. One particular track we were on had some small trees over it so we made tracks around them only to be stopped a few hundred metres further with a cluster of trees over the road. Too big a job for my 20inch Stihl chainsaw. So we retraced our way back out until we came to a very large old dead tree across the road that had fallen across the track leaving a huge hole at its former base. Not to be beaten we got our shovels out and filled the hole in and made a track around the tree. We eventually made our way back to camp passing a hungry but very mangy wombat on our way. We got back to camp about 3.30pm had a short break and headed out again returning by A bit of a front came through that evening with a short burst of wind and rain. The weather soon settled down and so did we around a nice warm fire. Terry and Anne Benson MICK KELLY - MANAGER 728B Fifteenth Street, Mildura Ph: Fax: info@austrek.com.au PAGE 7
8 Left camp 8:45 and headed off to Yea and Tallarook State Forest, quick fuel fill-up while Mark and Andrew went to see Michael about the tracks and any local advice. Headed off to Tallarook State Forest. Started off turning onto Freeman s Rd Track (Mark & Michelle trip leaders) nice mud hole to start with which you drive around if wished - Location 37,9,12s 145,10,21e. Went on down track and came across a big bog hole Troopy when it for a little swim and a short stay, a helping hand had it back on track were it navigated round with little problems. Went on through gate onto Wheelers Track, holes not too deep but got rocky for a bit, back onto Freeman s Track then onto Main Rd. Turned right onto DAN Track climbed a high hill on this track, needed 4 blokes on the back of Geoff s Ute to help bounce it up and around a rocky corner. (That s a lot of traction on the back Geoff). Stopped for lunch 12:30 to 1:10 in a open clearing with lots of old trees around. Headed of down Gravel Pitt Road, that ended up being much to rough and all had to turned around Monday 31st October and find another route. Onto abandon Track, RHT onto Cheds Track nice mud hole to start with, mud halfway up the car great fun, some cars needing a little help the last little bit. Onto Hickey Rd, and then another LT onto Magazine Track a steep down hill start to this track so slow and steady. Onto Cable Track,(37,10,6s 145,10,59e) this was lots of fun with a big long mud hole, lots of clearing fallen tree s and thinking on how to get around. Some winching and tow straps and we all got through with lots of fun and laughs. Back onto main road and heading to Yea, stopped for a coffee and a light snacks while Geoff and Jan had to take the car to the garage to checkout a possible puncture (sticks and dirt in the rim quick cleaned and back on the road) headed back to camp for a good get together around the camp fire. A good days driving, laughs around the camp fire topped off the day and a great weekend. Thanks goes out to all that attended the weekend and made for a great trip, thanks also to Mark & Michelle for leading another successful trip.
