The Coupeville Lions Club meets Wednesday Evenings 6 p.m. Fellowship-Networking/6:30 p.m. Dinner/7 p.m.-1 hour meeting & program. We meet at the Coupeville United Methodist Church (North Main and 7th Street) Hello Fellow Lions, What a wonderfully successful Student Scholarship Auction we had. Thanks those folks behind the scenes, auctioneers, the those who put the Ricardo Reyes reports and final tally together, and attendees who made it happen. Whenever we have any of our Club events, small or large, there are many folks involved assuring we have a successful event. Some of our events and activities can be managed by one person (or a handful) to get it off the ground, oftentimes they require many hands to set up and tear down. Such events, to name a few, will be the White Cane campaign, Blood drive, Commodities distribution, Woodcutting and Road clean up. Lets not forget to mention the largest event requiring more involvement, as it relates to days of set up and many volunteers during a two-week period. In my opinion the Annual Garage Sale is our club s most physical and mentally-intense challenge. We all should be thinking of who we can get to help us lift, move and display the heavy furniture and many boxes of other treasures. Ask a family member, a friend, a neighbor and other organizations you re a part of to lend a helping hand during the event. This year we will need to recruit a new person to manage the Vinyl Records, VCRs and DVDs section. There may be other sections as well, please let Karen President s Message Fletcher know if you re interested in managing one of those department sections. And for those who have managed a specific section in the past, Karen would like to know if you re willing to do it again. I am looking for people to help with the set up of the multipurpose room and, most importantly, the final clean up after the garage sale. Every year there is a lot of stuff in plastic tubs and operational items to move back to the garage with only a handful of volunteers remaining to do so. Please consider staying till the last vehicle, truck and trailer have left the school grounds, and then party if we re able to. After a long, hard, physically-demanding event a cool drink and legs up are most welcome. Our Nomination Committee is asking members to step up for some open positions on the Board. If you ever wonder and wanted to be in a leadership / decision making position now is the time to raise your hand, do not wait for someone to ask you, come forward and make your intentions known. You will learn a lot about the many things the Clubs does and get to know many of our Lions interests and help guide the direction of the Club. Our Lions Club has been in contact with a Lions club in Turkey with the interest in starting up a Twinning Club. This might require a new committee to be established. More details will follow once the board meets and gathers more information to make a decision. Thank you for your participation in all the activities and events you are involved in! Lion Ricardo Reyes
2 Membership Moments At the end of 2016, Lion Carol Decker and Ginny Munn transferred back to the Coupeville Lions Club from the Central Whidbey Lions. Although most of you may know these ladies, a few of us new comers to the club do not. Let me introduce you to Carol and Ginny: Welcome Lion Carol Decker Carol was born in New Hampshire yet migrated with her family to the west coast and grew up in the California Public School System. While living in San Jose, CA she enjoyed working at her licensed in home day care business. This busy lady also raised three children. Carol eldest child passed away and her second child is employed in California with the youngest recently retiring from the US Navy and is now self-employed. Carol and her husband are the proud grandparents to four children! After Carol s husbands retirement with 39 years in construction, they decided to move to Washington to be closer to family and be part of a small town community, which was always a dream of Carols. Carol s interests are in art mediums - painting on wood, canvas and fabric as well as hand appliqué quilting. Aside from Carol s many art projects she makes time to serve her church and tole paint for several charity auctions throughout the year. Carol s reason for joining the Coupeville Lions, all the cool kids are doing it! Oh, and she wants to serve her community. It s a true delight to have Carol serving amongst us...she is truly a dedicated Lion. Something interesting I learned about Carol, she spent her honeymoon learning how to fly fish in the rain! Dedication and devotion from the beginning!! Welcome back Lion Ginny Munn Ginny has been a Lion for almost 14 years. Lion Vin Sherman sponsored her in Ginny began her lions venture with the Coupeville Lions Club, yet transferred to the Central Whidbey Lions due to cataracts and unable to see at night. Lucky for us she transferred back to the Coupeville Lions Club in Ginny enjoys serving! Some of her favorite service projects was being chair of the Harvest Festival and Sunshine team. She was Central Whidbey s secretary and treasurer and did scheduling for the Garage Sale while serving on the CWL team! Additionally, she was the Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center (LERC) Satellite Manager for H7 and a Meals on Wheels (MOW) provider. Ginny loves to serve! But what some of you don t know is Ginny retired out of Executive Accounting for Alaska Lumber and Pulp which was located on the 30th floor of the Rainier Bank Tower building in Seattle, WA. She was part of a team who did all the books and purchasing for two mills and company stores, shipping goods via their company barge from Seattle, to Sitka and Wrangell, Alaska Pulp Mills. The company had many celebrations at the Canlis in Seattle, in formal attire. Timber issues in Alaska required many of Ginny s fellow employees to retire early. Unfortunately, she lived in the days when women made half of what a man in the same position made. Ginny went on to be Office Manager for five Construction Companies (indicating one Christmas bonus was $4k). Following that position she did the books for a Construction Company, Veterinary Clinic, as well as the Coupeville Boys & Girls Club, all on Whidbey Island. Ginny was in a Song and Dance group, Choir of the Sound, a group of 125 women and men for nearly 12 years on the mainland. After moving to Whidbey permanently, she traveled back and forth from the island to mainland for rehearsals and shows. Three concerts per year, Pops in costume, Classical in tuxedos with full symphony orchestra, and Christmas in costume. She also toured in Europe plus many shows in Seattle/Shoreline area. She tapped with the Silver Taps (six gals 60 years old or more) out of Oak Harbor Senior Center with a choreographer and performing in costume at Elks, Brodniak Hall, and Anacortes. Additionally, she traveled many times with the Shifty Sailors on tour (only because Vern Olsen and Ginny went to high school at Lincoln High on the mainland). She still sings with the Whidbey Community Chorus, doing two concerts per year, spring and Christmas. Welcome back Ginny! Page 2
3 Kitchen Shelter Dedication Lion Mayor Molly Hughes and our Club are planning the re-dedication of the renovated Town Park Kitchen Shelter on May 31, a fifth Wednesday, now that our work on the building is done for now. Instead of Bingo at the Rec Hall, we are planning for a Burger Burn dinner at the Shelter following the dedication at 5 p.m. We are planning to expand the food offerings beyond just burgers by making the event a potluck like we do for Student of the Quarter. Details will follow closer to the event. The dedication will honor the memory of our club s Mr. Lion, Rod Barnes, and the Club for renovation and improvements as part of the Lions Centennial Heritage Service Project. The Shelter is believed to have been built by the founders of our Club back in the late 1930 s and by renovating the facility now, we are continuing our service to the community and maintaining the building for use for another years. The Town will unveil a restored and updated sign that has been in the building for many years. The updated sign will dedicate the Shelter in Lion Rod s memory and recognize our work in making the restoration and improvements. Following the dedication a traditional post-garage Sale Burger Burn dinner and social will be served for $5. This is an opportunity to remember Rod and all he did over many years for our Club and many other clubs. Lion Rod s friends from the other clubs, the Zone and District will be invited to join us to tell stories and for us to learn more about Lion Rod and his service to Lionism. This is also an opportunity to see what we did with the renovation and improvements to the Shelter. If it rains that night we hopefully all can get into the Shelter and stay dry. Contact Lion Bob Jonson for more information or send in your favorite moment with Lion Rod. The remembrances will be read at the re-dedication. Membership Moments Shermans recognized for 30, 50 years with Lions Club Lion Al Sherman was honored for 50 years of membership as a Lion. Vin Sherman shows off his recognition for 30 years as a Lion. 5 Youth Projects Leo pancake fundraiser serves up nearly $600 in profits The Leo s held a Pancake breakfast with Applebees. The restaurant opened up specifically for them from 8-10 a.m. on February 12 as long as they sold 100 tickets. The cost was $10 each and if they sold 100 tickets they got to keep half of the money. They sold a total of 110 tickets so they got to keep $550.They also received $15 in tips for a grand total of $565. New Eagle Scouts Troop 4058 Scouts Nick Dion (left) and Mitchell Carroll (right) received their Eagle Scout badges from former Scoutmaster Terry Menges at a Court of Honor on January 10.
