Lion Photos by Marsha Phay and various helpers. September 2015, Vol. 7 Issue 3 The Coupeville Lions Club meets Wednesday Evenings 6:00 pm Fellowship-Networking/6:30 pm Dinner/7 pm-1 hour meeting & program. We meet at the Coupeville United Methodist Church (North Main and 7th Street) Bruce s Bullet Who stole summer? Only yesterday school was getting out, grass stopped growing, and Coupeville Lions went to our twice-a-month meeting schedule. Now, we re back in the thick of it again. Summer definitely lasted longer when I was a kid. This month sees the return of many familiar functions. Four membership meetings, along with by-weekly board of directors meetings. The International Environmental Photography Contest is ramping up, and Lion Sue Waters has an article in this issue to tell us all about it. Woodcutting and the Salmon BBQ help round out the list, and the Commodities Distribution must not be forgotten. By the way, we are looking for a new chair for that one, too. Maybe this could be your chance to serve! This month we have the privilege of giving Lion Ron Wilkinson, the current Zone Chair for Zone 7, our club s endorsement for the position of Second Vice District Governor. His formal announcement of candidacy will be at his first zone meeting on the 19th of September. Time will be 10am to 2pm at the Pacific Rim Center. Good luck, Lion Ron. You will make a great District Governor! Keeping our club strong and vibrant must always be a top priority. Without that priority, we will gradually start to become less and less able to serve the Coupeville community. When we get new Lions in the club, we need to keep them around for more than just the first year. Sponsors and Mentors, that means you. Call them up and invite them to the next meeting. Go out to coffee with them, and get to know them. Answer questions. Light the fire. Help get them excited about being a Lion. Help make them feel like a Lion. This month holds a lot of promise! So, let s all have a busy, productive and safe September. And as always, remember: We are Coupeville Lions. We serve! Yours in Service Lion Bruce MacNair, President, Coupeville Lion

Cagey Comments Page 2 September 2015, Vol. 7 Issue 3 Membership Moment What a terrific start to a visitation program for the Coupeville Lions Club! We had 15 members show up for our visitation to the Oak Harbors Lion Club August 26 th. I was a little worried early on when it looked like we would outnumber the Oak Harbor Lions, but shortly before the meeting more showed up to balance the numbers. Our next fun excursion will be to Sedro-Woolley for their annual corn feed on Monday, September 21st, 6-8 pm. $12 gets you their great corn and a BBQ chicken quarter. It s at the Sedro-Woolley Community Center at 703 Pacific St. I ve been to this event and can tell you the food is terrific and you ll get to meet Lions from Clubs all over the NW. Car-pooling makes sense for this, so we ll leave from the church parking lot at 4:45. Put it on your calendar! Have you been noticing lots of new faces at the Club? We ve had 6 new members sign up in the last month and Past Zone Chair Bob Clay will be doing a big Induction September 16th! New Member Profile This month I want to introduce you to a new Lion you ve probably been seeing during our meal service. Myles McGee picked up one of our membership flyers at the Garage Sale and had the opportunity to talk to Deanna Rogers about becoming involved. Deanna is a great example of a working Lion and quickly had Myles sign up. Myles was born in Atlanta, GA and joined the Navy after high school. After basic training and a food service training program, he was assigned to his first ship, the USS JOHN S MCCAIN, DDG-56, home ported in Yokosuka, Japan. Like most ships then, he wound up with several deployments to the Persian Gulf. His next tour (more food service) was on the USS JOHN C STENNIS, CVN-71, home ported in Bremerton, WA. Again, there were Gulf deployments, and Myles even wound up detached for 1 year to an Army base in southern Iran working with detainee operations. Moving on, Myles was ordered to Naval Base Kitsap where he became the barracks manager for the area. Another career change came with Myles going to intelligence school and then being assigned to the USS PELELIU. This also involved another deployment, this time to Bahrain to work special operations with SEALs. His best assignment is his last, to NAS Whidbey and more work in the intelligence field. In April, 2016, Myles will complete his bachelor s degree from Brandman University with a degree in criminal justice/homeland security. He plans then to transfer to inactive reserves and enter the Navy Chaplain program next Fall to Regent University, Virginia where he will work on his Masters of Divinity degree. Myles is a real self-starter. At his first membership meeting, he expressed an interest in helping out in the kitchen, so you ll see him there most weeks. He also is an early volunteer for the Salmon BBQ, where we ll appreciate his food service skills! Welcome aboard, Myles! Children s Service Week Check your July/August Lion magazine and you'll see a suggestion from our new International President, Dr. Jitsuhiro Yamada. Lions' Children's Dignity Week is Aug. 30 Sept. 5th. President Yamada encourages Lions to aid children that week. August 31st is also the start of school. So, during the last Board Meeting, the Board approved spending $300 from our Foundation undesignated fund to provided three $100 Wal-Mart gift certificates for clothing for 3 needy children. This was done with the assistance of the School District Advocate, who accompanied the families on their shopping trip. $100 goes a long way at Wal-Mart and the kids are thrilled! This is a community service project we hope to continue in future years. John Kohlmann, Membership Chair

Cagey Comments Page 3 September 2015, Vol. 7 Issue 3 Bill Roberts, in charge of ticket sales for the Salmon BBQ, urges members to get their tickets early. The price is reduced to $15.00 this year, and the Volkswalkers are coming to town. Not a good year to delay your purchase! Please call, . or see Bill at the meeting on Sept 2 to guarantee your ticket. Contact him at patbill@frontiewr.com, or phone him at You can also call Joe Walck at for Will Call ticket reservations. We Lions can really help the BBQ volunteers by making decisions early, so that they can accurately plan and purchase for the BBQ, rather than having to guess the attendance! Great salmon, and a great price! How can anyone say No??

Cagey Comments Page 4 September 2015, Vol. 7 Issue 3 Environmental Photo Contest Begins in September Can you believe it? This will be my third year chairing the Environmental Photo Contest. The fact that September is here is hard enough, let alone that I have been in the Coupeville Lions Club three years now. The daylight hours are shortening; yet with the sun still strong in the sky, the opportunity to take some great photos related to our environment is just a click away. As with every year there will be five categories, four of which are the same; Animal Life Landscape (Urban or natural) Plant Life Weather Phenomenon The fifth category is a challenge to you to think outside the box and come up with your interpretation to define this year's special theme: Dignity, harmony, humanity: Celebrating the peaceful coexistence of species. All photos must be 8"X10" and may be in black and white or in color, and most important there are no people in the image. A couple of key factors to remember are to take the images with the highest resolution possible. Remember, the highest print quality is important. Clarity within the photo is also important. Blurry 'can be' artistic yet not the best for a winning photograph. And of course, don t forget that there must be no people in the image. For those new to this international contest, the rules/instructions are as follows: The impartial judging of photos should focus on originality, artistic merit, and portrayal of the environmental theme. LIONS CLUBS select and submit one winning photo to the district. LIONS DISTRICTS select and submit one winning photo to the multiple district. January 15, 2016 is the suggested deadline for districts to submit one 8 x 10 (20.3 x 25.4 cm) printed photo to the multiple district. LIONS MULTIPLE DISTRICTS select and submit one winning photo to the international contest. LIONS CLUBS INTERNATIONAL will display multiple district-level entries at the annual Lions international convention. Registered convention attendees will vote for their favorite photos. An award will be presented to the winning photographers. The six (the five category winners and the Best of Show) winning photos will appear on the Lions Web site. You must turn in your entry/entries to me no later than November 4th, Our judging will be held on November 18, The winning photo will announced on December 2, 2015 and will advance to the District level. Our website has this information and links to the International Lions Organization Photo contests rules and to the contest rules found on the WE SERVE page as well as on the home page. I look forward to seeing what sparks your eye and what is captured on 'film'. Best of luck to everyone. Sue Waters Editor's Note: Get out and take those pictures folks! When you do, keep in mind what Ansel Adams once said: Sometimes I arrive just when God s ready to have someone click the shutter. Maybe this time that someone will be you.

Cagey Comments Page 5 September 2015, Vol. 7 Issue 3 Camp Horizon Update The 2015 camp season was a great success. We hosted about 280 camper weeks (some campers come for more than one week). The camp was at capacity. This cannot be done without a great deal of volunteer help and we did our part. First I would like to thank the volunteers that have provided continuing support for many years. These include Karen Fletcher, Dave Fish, and Bruce McNair who volunteered for all of our meal service days and all of our Adventure Camp van driving days, and Warren Ivy who volunteered for meal service for our first two days. The exciting part is the new members, first-time volunteers, and non-lions who helped both with meal service and driving. These include Tom VanEvery who helped with meal service two days and drove a van for Adventure Camp for two days. Brian and Marilyn Pulk helped with meal service and brought their granddaughters Amanda and Paige. Amanda volunteered to scrape dishes because that is her job at home. After completing the breakfast dishes for about 85 campers and staff she commented, that's a whole lot different than doing it for four people. But wait, there's more. Fred Bronson had been to camp to help with cleanup and maintenance, but had never done meal service. He and Eloise (future Lion?) came up for one day and helped with serving, washing dishes, and cleaning up. In addition, Lion spouse Dick Graham helped for two days serving meals and helping in the kitchen before meals. Many thanks to all of you who helped. Many hands make the job go much easier. Dave Fish Our Club had a Banner passed (in our case it was a Zone Banner) last month at the Cabinet meeting in Blaine. The Banner passing is a ceremony for new officers who will be away from their Home Club while they attend to their new duties. The purpose of the Banner is to hang at the Officer s Home Club, as a reminder that that Officer may not be present at many of the Home Club's meetings because that he/she is away at other Lion Clubs meetings or other Official business. Banner Passing is an event that every District holds around the 1st of the Lions Year. A Zone Banner passing ceremony goes like this: The outgoing Club President passes the Banner to the outgoing Zone Chair (ZC), WHO then passes the Banner to the incoming ZC, WHO then passes the Banner to the incoming President. The photo shows Molly (outgoing Pres.), outgoing/incoming ZC Ron, incoming pres. Bruce, Rod Barnes (as Past Council Chair), and PID (Past International Director) Dur Roberson Rod Barnes

Cagey Comments Page 6 September 2015, Vol. 7 Issue 3 Scholarship Dinner 2016 We re starting to gear up for the Scholarship Dinner and Auction next February To get your juices flowing in anticipation of exciting experiences and fabulous items to bid on, we are sharing a few photos from a couple recently enjoyed auction items. Al Sherman shared this photo of the winner of the Combine Ride. The winner of the ride with Clark Bishop had a great time. She had never been in a combine before and thought it was a hoot! We hope to include this again in February who do you know that needs to take a ride with Clark? Al was also the official photographer when the Hillers, the Grahams, and the Shermans took the tour of PSE s salmon conservation program on Baker Lake. We met in Concrete where Walt Blackford, PSE s Community Services Manager, took us on a 5 hour tour that included lunch at PSE s historic Baker Lodge. We saw PSE s facilities for transporting migrating salmon around two large dams. We also visited the PSE fish hatchery and spawning beaches that were built to boost Baker River sockeye salmon runs. Working Together with Our Hands Last month Diana Walti wrote an article about starting to gather our yarn to begin knitting for the hospital's new babies and the gift shop. Fall is a great time to get started on this baby project. This morning I stopped by Dena's yarn shop on Front Street to ask if it would be possible to use her shop to get a few Lions together to add to what Diana and I have begun to donate to the hospital. Dena is all in and can accommodate 4-6 quite comfortably. The availability is any day that she is open. She can assist with getting the right type and size of needles and her yarn selection is growing all the time! We are willing to share our knowledge to anyone wanting to try their hand at this task. We would like to see a show of hands, aka an , from anyone interested in participating. This is basically just to get you all started, and we can meet occasionally until you are up to speed and can work independently. Then, join the two of us at the Wednesday Lions Meetings with your small project! My calendar currently has the first three September Wednesdays open. Would a couple of hours on any of these days work for you? Please contact Diana Walti or me, Sue Waters, so we can get you hooked on keeping your hands busy! 7 Cagey Comments Page 7 September 2015, Vol. 7 Issue 3 Lions Support Ebey s Reserve 8 th Annual Preservation Field School Ebey s Landing National Historical Reserve held its 8th annual Preservation Field School in early August, spending two weeks working on the 1854 Thomas Coupe House. Thomas Coupe, a ship captain plying the coastal trade between Puget Sound and San Francisco during the California Gold Rush, was one of the earliest settlers on Whidbey Island, claiming farmland along Penn Cove that would eventually become the town of Coupeville. His house is the oldest remaining wood frame house in the Reserve, built almost entirely of redwood shipped up from California. Over 160 years later, much of that original material remains intact. This year s Field School focused on window sash repair and glazing, repair and treatment of redwood siding, and uncovering the historic Coupe orchard from a smothering overgrowth of blackberries, ivy, and other invasive plant life. Led by NPS Preservation Carpenter Scott Swenson and his operations crew, the project brought out more than 50 volunteers of all ages who dedicated nearly 600 hours of their time and labor to preserving the Coupe House and restoring its historic orchard. While the local Coupeville Lion s Club continues to provide the backbone of community volunteers, people came out to work on the project from all over the region, including staff from the Whidbey Island Naval Air Station and NOCA. Photo: Denis Hill The Ebey s Landing Preservation Field School began in 2008 as a partnership program of the National Park Service and the Coupeville Lion s Club, dedicated to training local volunteers in hands-on preservation techniques and applying those techniques to the preservation of nationally recognized historic structures within the Reserve. Over the last eight years, the school has helped restore a number of invaluable historic buildings, including the c.1860s Boyer Barn, the 1905 Coupeville Wharf Warehouse, two turn-of the century military structures at Fort Casey State Park, and one of the most iconic buildings in the Reserve, the 1860 Ferry House. Every year, the Ebey s Landing Preservation Field School brings together knowledge and expertise of National Park Service staff with community skill and enthusiasm to preserve this vital historic landscape for generations to come. Ron Boyer Check the Calendar for details on upcoming programs in September. Here are some pictures of Roger Sherman during his presentation last month on Farming Ebey Prairie Then and Now.
