1 brings in a display item will have their name entered for a prize. Please bring along something to share and make this display as wonderful as the one at the last meeting. TRAVELODGE AIRPORT HOTEL, 925 Dixon Rd., Etobicoke, ON President s Message Wow! We had a great meeting in September and are off to a great start for this season. Our display at the meeting was incredible and many thanks are in order to all who contributed. From the earliest Torsion clock to some of the rarest produced, the display was one of the finest we have ever had. The mart was good and the presentations by Doug Thomson and Rudy Bonilla were terrific. Our upcoming meeting is on October 30. Once again, we remind you that there are tables in the Mart Room where you may offer your surplus items for sale. Our display for October 30 th meeting will be centred on Seth Thomas. Bring your favorite Seth Thomas item for the display. Our display for this meeting will be centred on Seth Thomas. Please bring along any article that is Seth Thomas related. It doesn t have to be a clock. It could be display material or advertising material or whatever. We d like to learn from your experience. As an encouragement, everyone who Continuing on the theme of American clocks, Ron Metcalfe will be presenting a workshop on Troubleshooting American Clocks. Many of us have experienced the frustration of having a clock that won t run or stops intermittently. The techniques that Ron will present will give everyone a greater understanding of how to diagnose problems and lead the way to resolution. You don t want to miss his workshop as it will, undoubtedly, alieve some of your frustrations when clock problems rise. Everyone who brings in something for the display will be entered into a prize draw. Once again, we will present a short instructional video during the Mart. Thanks are due to George Proc and Alex Kung for coming up with this idea and making it happen. The video is a continuous loop so feel free to sit for a few minutes and absorb something new. We will be running another first aid clinic after the workshop so please if you are encountering a watch or clock Page 1
2 repair problem bring it along so that we can discuss it and offer suggestions as to the solution. Saving Time- Ayres Clock, Indianapolis. Adapted from the IndianaLandmarks.org What s the saying? Even a stopped clock is right twice a day? Well the historic Ayres clock at the southwest corner of Washington and Meridian is right eight times a day, since it has four faces and none displays the same time! Why can t we get it working again? Indiana Landmarks is on the case. They want to restore a civic landmark that was so important in lives of people in the city for decades. For generations, people met under the Ayres clock to go shopping, or to lunch or dinner. The hotel facilities are under renovation and we do not know exactly how we will be inconvenienced by the ongoing work. Please bear this in mind as we meet this year. The hotel is trying to be accommodating and they often have no advance warning of the disruption. Remember to fill in your licence plate number at the front desk after you have parked to prevent any parking charges. Looking forward to seeing you on October 30, Ben Toronto Chapter #33 Club Membership It s the people who make the club and the Toronto Chapter #33 is always looking to extend an invitation to anyone who is interested in Horology. Know someone who might like to come? Maybe even a member from the past? Be sure to invite them to come out and see what we re all about these days! Not sure if they want to join? Drop us a note a Chapter33@rogers.com and we ll arrange to host them as a guest so they can see what our club has to offer. They needed to raise $20,000 by November 7 to restore the 10,000-pound clock. Vonnegut and Bohn designed the 1905 Ayres department store, and in 1936 Arthur Bohn designed the bronze clock. Positioned nearly 29 feet above the sidewalk, the eight-foot tall clock gave passersby the time from all four directions when it worked. Now it s just plain confusing. And when the bronze cherub comes to perch on the clock on Thanksgiving eve an annual holiday tradition since 1947 they want to make sure he knows when to arrive, so the restoration schedule is tight. The clock repair by Smith s Bell and Clock Company will cost $10,000, and it will need annual maintenance to remain accurate. By November 7, they want to raise $20,000 to fix the clock and create the maintenance fund, says Marsh Davis, president of Indiana Landmarks. Many still call it the Ayres clock, even though the department store has been gone since The city owns the building, which is incorporated in Circle Centre mall. Carson Pirie Scott occupies a portion of the old Ayres building. Page 2
3 Jeff Bennett, Indianapolis Deputy Mayor of Community UPDATE: Thanks to an amazing response, they ve already Development, applauds the citizen campaign to repair the surpassed their original fundraising goal! But because they landmark clock, promising that the city will expedite the permits needed in order to get repair work done in time for the cherub s arrival. The bronze cherub appears on the Ayres clock each Thanksgiving eve, to keep an eye on shoppers during the holiday season. (Photo: Lee Mandrell) The campaign goal is that by November 23 when everyone looks for the cherub, all four faces of the clock will display the correct time. recently discovered that the clock needs more work than originally thought, they ve increased their campaign goal to $50,000. A worker in a lift inspecting the clock found an unsecured nine-inch piece of bronze that could have fallen on a pedestrian s head. The increased amount will allow them to buy four new clock faces to replicate the original ones, clean and repair the bronze, and enlarge the maintenance fund to ensure both annual clock cleaning and repair and cleaning and conservation of the bronze case and cherub about every four years.
