WOSU Public Media Wins Membership Award To better serve our members, over the past few years WOSU Public Media has moved from an annual giving model of support, to one that relies on the continuing support of sustaining members. Through this system, membership is ongoing and giving is easier through credit card or checking account payments at a fixed amount per month. This type of giving is not only convenient for you, but gives WOSU a stable foundation and allows us to rely less on on-air fundraising. Fewer pledge days mean more time to enjoy our regular programming. And while pledge drives on radio and pledge programming on TV will always be with us, our sustainer model gives us the consistency of support to better serve you. With this sustaining membership model, WOSU Public Media was recently recognized with the PBS 2015 Membership Award Development. We were selected above many other national submissions. The selection committee at PBS was comprised of the Development Advisory Council, which is made up of membership and development professionals at PBS member stations throughout the country. Of the many reasons WOSU was selected for this award, the most prominent is that the example we have set can now be applied to any membership program at any PBS station. We were honored to receive this award and share it with our benefactors and ultimate beneficiaries our members. 4 End of an Era Tom Borgerding Departs WOSU After Three Decades Essential Classics Music you know you know, even if you don t know you know it Mondays at 7pm with Christopher Purdy August 3 Handel: Water Music August 10 Tchaikovsky: Swan Lake Suite Tom Borgerding, the patriarch of WOSU News, will sign off from 89.7 NPR News for the final time at the end of August. His retirement will complete 30 years of service to the listeners of central Ohio. Tom came to WOSU Public Media in the summer of 1985 from WPFB in Middletown, Ohio. It was a homecoming for Tom who graduated from OSU s School of Journalism in After arriving at OSU s Fawcett Center for Tomorrow, Tom never made it to the earth s surface, gladly toiling away in the basement studios and newsroom of WOSU. Tom served the 820 AM, 89.7 FM and wosu.org audiences as reporter, anchor, editor, and managing editor. Tom has covered just about every major story in central Ohio over the past three decades. His memorable pieces included a 3-part series on the restoration of a Native American language spoken in Ohio 200 years ago; daily coverage of the Highway Shooter trial; and the return of Lima Company which lost 23 Columbus-based Marines in an Iraq War battle. He was also WOSU s perennial correspondent at the Ohio Farm Science Review and the Ohio State Fair. He s won too many journalism awards to count. In addition to serving WOSU listeners, Tom has been a mentor to many young aspiring journalists who ve passed through the newsroom s Mandie Trimble credits Tom for putting her on her award-winning path. Tom has been an incredible mentor to me. Arriving here 10 years ago as the greenest of young journalists, he has guided me through the years and encouraged me when I didn t think I had the know-how to cover a tough story," said Mandie. Tom has given back to his craft. He s served on the boards of the Central Ohio Society for Professional Journalists and The Ohio Associated Press Broadcasters, one year as AP s board president. We at WOSU will miss Tom s Bob Dylan quotes, his folksy on-air presence, and his steadfast refusal to give CampusParc a dime. (He parks off-campus and walks.) Most of all we ll miss Tom s cheerful personality and insatiable appetite for a good story. by MICHAEL THOMPSON, 89.7 NPR News Programming Director August 17 Beethoven: Symphony No. 4 August 24 "A Musical Bouquet August 31 Debussy: La Mer Tchaikovsky: Swan Lake Suite Classical Showcase: Concerts From the Frick Special concert performances from far and wide Fridays at 7pm for 10 weeks For over 75 years, the series Concerts from the Frick Collection has delighted listeners with the finest in keyboard recitals, all manner of chamber groups and groundbreaking early music ensembles.
