Editor General Manager Chief Operating Officer Director of Marketing & Communications Membership Ann Draghi Tom Rieland Karen Olstad Meredith Hart Rob Walker About 18 months ago, WOSU TV premiered a new weekly arts program called Broad & High. The title is a play on the downtown intersection, but it also reflects our goal to broadly focus on the burgeoning arts scene in central Ohio. It s risky to commit precious resources to a weekly series, but we saw a growing void of substantive arts coverage in Columbus. Among the early achievements of Broad & High: The most viewed online video from WOSU in 2014 was the program s Day in the Life of a Ballerina focusing on BalletMet s Samantha Lewis. Watch it and all the show segments at wosu.org/broadandhigh. The programming we produce is seen across the country through a national collaborative, which means we sometimes air segments produced by other stations, and other PBS affiliates show our segments. Stories from Broad & High have now aired on stations in Philadelphia, Miami, Los Angeles, Washington, (and more) as part of their arts shows. In its first year, Broad & High won a regional Emmy Award the top local broadcast award in our business. That reflects the talents and commitment of our entire production team with our superb producer Jackie Shafer in the middle of all of it. The tremendous support of the Greater Columbus Arts Council has also been vital to the success of the program. A distinctive part of this project is that our team shares the videos with the arts organizations and artists profiled. This allows them to market themselves and extends the impact of our work. We re proud we can provide these resources to build an audience for the arts! Friends of WOSU Board President Vice President Secretary/Treasurer Karen Ickes Bill Schiffman Kathleen McGinnis If you miss Broad & High, you miss part of what makes our community exceptional. Make it a date or set your DVR for Wednesdays at 7:30 pm and Sundays at 5 pm, only on WOSU TV. Board Members Kyle B. It s not like I didn t know about this brilliant paean to the robust creative scene here in Columbus; I just hadn t gotten around to actually seeing it I can honestly say it s a great showpiece for the Arch City. 3 Capital University : Bexley Premieres Sunday, February 15 at 8pm. Only on WOSU TV. In the countryside east of Columbus at the turn of the century, two communities joined to form a village. That village became Bexley and the name was taken from the town in England where the ancestors of one of Bexley s first prominent citizens had lived. Among those moving east to enjoy life on the shady streets in Bexley were members of Columbus Jewish community. Descendants of European immigrants who settled on the South Side, their success allowed them to move east, away from the city. : Bexley explores both the diversity in the Jewish community and the diversity of religion in Bexley. Because the population and size of the city have remained virtually unchanged in the last 50 years, because the Bexley City Schools have always been among the best funded and most successful in all Ohio, and because it s a destination community where families move to and then remain, the city has a reputation as a place that has escaped change. But a closer look reveals that Bexley has become more diverse racially and socioeconomically than many people realize. : Bexley also looks at the growth of Capital University, the community volunteers who saved the Drexel Theatre, the city s longstanding commitment to education, and explores the natural beauty of the only municipality to be designated an arboretum. Eager for more behind-the-scenes details on : Bexley? Go to columbusneighborhoods.org all month long for web exclusives, bonus features and segments you won t see on the show. A Roaring Good Time To ring in the New Year with style, more than 150 people dressed in 1920s garb celebrating the start of Downton Abbey Season Five with a Roaring Twenties Speakeasy and Screening hosted by WOSU Public Media on January 3. With jazz music, hors d oeuvres, signature cocktails like the Bee s Knees, a Highclere Castle photo backdrop, and an extensive silent auction, guests were transported to a flapperesque era at the Galbreath Pavilion. After a talk on Prohibition by OSU Professor Brian Waters, another 50 guests joined the Speakeasy attendees in the Ohio Theatre for a free screening of the first episode of this next season of Downton Abbey. It was a privilege for WOSU Public Media to provide such a unique experience to our PBS viewers and their support helps us to keep programming like Downton Abbey on the air. Don t miss a moment of all of the drama and intrigue as Downton Abbey continues Sunday nights at 9pm through March 1 on WOSU TV. 5 Invisibilia Looks at Unseen Forces Behind Human Behavior 89.7 NPR News and NPR are airing a new program that explores a world we cannot see. Invisibilia focuses on the forces that shape human behavior ideas, beliefs, assumptions, and thoughts. This one-hour show, which takes its name from the Latin word meaning all the invisible things, is produced by NPR s award-winning Science Desk. Listen to the show Sundays at 4pm on 89.7 NPR News. Invisibilia looks at how people s lives are shaped and sometimes even controlled by ideas and feelings that are powerful and rarely examined. Creators and co-hosts Alix Spiegel and Lulu Miller who helped create the groundbreaking public radio programs This American Life and Radiolab combine powerful storytelling and cutting-edge research from the pages of scientific journals to bring listeners a unique audio experience. In the six-episode pilot season, Spiegel and Miller dig into how everyone has had, at times, dark, disturbing thoughts and whether those thoughts have any significance. They look at how fear can shape people s actions; what causes fear and how to exert control over it. And they examine how expectations have real-world consequences so powerful that they overcome physical disability. Invisibilia will introduce you to people and ideas you ve never encountered before, said Spiegel. We profile these very unusual people because their experiences allow us to look more closely at the invisible forces that shape us all things like fear and empathy. Each program is scientifically rigorous, jumping right to the heart of the latest psychological and brain research, said Anne Gudenkauf, Senior Supervising Editor of NPR s Science Desk and former WOSU producer. Alix and Lulu show us how what scientists know sheds light on what we experience. Invisibilia anchors its examinations with intimate accounts from real people living at the boundaries of our understanding of that new science. Take a glimpse into a world you can t see with NPR s Invisibilia, a new show co-hosted by Alix Spiegel and Lulu Miller, who helped create Radiolab and This American Life.
